The World Supersport race would be 18 laps of the tyre-chewing Phillip Island circuit.
PJ Jacobsen led into turn one, followed by Jules Cluzel, charging though from eighth place on the grid, and kenan Sofuoglu. Sofuoglu quickly took second place then first. Further back, Lorenzo Zanetti had a tank slapper and clipped Anthony West, but both riders stayed upright and heading in the right direction.
On the second lap, Cluzel took the lead back only to lose it to a hard-charging Randy Krummenacher who worked his way through from fifth place the lap before. The next lap, Jacobsen led Cluzel and Krummenacher while Sofuoglu, the consistently quickest man all weekend, kept a cool fourth place behind the fighting and Anthony West, turning up to the weekend's racing with a hastily thrown-together team, was in fifth.
On the fourth lap, Federico Caricasulo charged through Sofuoglu and West's slipstream to take fourth place, only to be passed by West under a yellow flag. West made it to third place, then first, but was immediately told to drop back two places which he did.
The front riders swapped places a lot more over the next few laps, with West making some very decisive passes only to have the places taken back a few turns later. As the leading ten riders looked like they were going to stay together all race, Jules Cluzel ran on into a corner and hit the grass, the gravel and a tyre wall. After picking his bike up, he rejoined well out of a points position. Kenan Sofuoglu then made his move and took to the front with ease. As Sofuoglu fended off Anthony West, further back, Lorenzo Zanetti had another near-crash and as he rescued it, he charged into the swooping line of Federico Caricasulo and Caricasulo's rear wheel clipped his front and sent him down and out.
On the twelfth lap, with Sofuoglu leading West and Krummenacher, spots of rain turned up in sector one to make the firefight at the front even more interesting. Lots of jostling for position, everyone assuming the race could be stopped at any moment, as the race was past two-thirds distance, Sofuoglu showed confidence or folly and built a two second gap from the pack led by Krummenacher, West or Jacobsen, and Gino Rea and Alex Baldolini joined in the fight.
Sofuoglu slowed down a little, after rain hit sector two as well, and Krummenacher pulled the pack to within a second of the world champion.
With less than three laps remaining, Kenan Sofuoglu crashed out while leading the race. He later explained that he thought his rear tyre exploded and he just bailed out.
Randy Krummenacher made a charge for it and built a one second, then two second, gap from the fray behind him, taking the victory on his first World Supersport race. Anthony West looked like he had second in the bag, but Federico Caricasulo charged out of the last corner and passed him at the line for second place.
Caricasulo described the race as the best race of his life, in spite of Lorenzo Zanetti turning up at Parc Fermé to chastise him for his part in Zanetti's downfall.
After a mishap with a bottle of Prosecco, the Swiss national anthem rang out across the podium, with two rookies and a local on the steps while the three championship favourites sat in their garages, wondering what just happened.
