2015 Silverstone MotoGP Qualifying Practice Result: Records Smashed In Tough Pole Battle

Results and summary of qualifying for MotoGP:

Marc Marquez has taken a scintillating pole at Silverstone, with a stunning lap which smashed the pole record at the Northamptonshire circuit. Jorge Lorenzo pushed hard in the first half of the lap but lost out in the second, ending up nearly three tenths off the time of Marquez but also under the lap record. Dani Pedrosa completes the front row, the second Repsol Honda bookending his teammate at Silverstone.

Valentino Rossi had a relatively good qualifying session, heading up the second row in 4th, and just edging ahead of the two Tech 3 Yamahas, Pol Espargaro beating his teammate Bradley Smith. The satellite Hondas fill the third row behind the satellite Yamahas, Scott Redding starting from 7th, while Cal Crutchlow starts from 8th. Andrea Iannone is the fastest Ducati in 9th, starting just ahead of Aleix Espargaro on the Suzuki, who had made his way through from Q1 earlier.

This is looking like it could be a repeat of last year, but now with Pedrosa in the mix... Can't wait for the race!

I've mentioned this before, but still I think that this starting back from zero at 13th place with the lap time differences is clumsy. I wish they would simply relate all the lap times to the pole time, so that I can see where everybody stands, also the numbers 13 and further down the grid. I know that means that often 13th place will be a bit quicker than 12th, but I see no problem with that.
Now it is as if the second half of the field is in another race or something.

That is a seriously good performance by Stefan Bradl on the Aprilia! It seems they have been doing some proper systematic testing of set-ups and swing arms during the practices (the German site Speedweek gives pretty detailed information on that, having a close connection to Bradl), and found a real sweet spot in qualifying! Would be cool if they found something fundamental. In fact the Aprilia is the one bike that can be properly called a prototype, since it is a real rolling test bike.

Interesting project and I am very curious to see what Aprilia will come up with for 2016, and what they'll do with their line-up for next year. If only they could run a third bike, because also Sam Lowes seems like a exciting addition to the team. If they have to choose though, it will be a loss to let Bradl go, I would say.

Absolutely. I really hope they bring the new bike before 2016. Next year there are new tires and new electronics, that's going to make t difficult to assess the level of development from one bike to the other.

Same, happy to see Bradl doing well, no doubt fired up by the thoughts of being replaced, but it would seem silly to dump Bradl for Lowes and keep Bautista. I like Bautista as well, but when someone else comes in on the same bike and is immediately better, well?

I could not help to notice that Redding and Crutchlow got a tow from Marquez BOTH times.

I guess somebody wanted them between Marquez and Rossi... ( Lorenzo is to fast in Qual that they could dream about beeing in front of him also )....

I think that what wee see is the ability to make progress during the season. All startet with more or less new bikes but the best teams ( Honda and Yamaha ) has developed the bikes more than Ducati and Suzuki has. The potensial is there but they havent been able to unlock it like the factory Honda and Yamaha teams have. One could also ague that the riders arent up to Ailien standards either.

They should really have put Rossi and Marquez on the Suzuki and Pedrosa and Lorenzo on the Ducati :)

not a fan to be honest. I've always preferred Donnington Park. For some reason even after 5 years I still can't figure out where riders are on track or get a predictive flow whilst watching bike racing at the venue? Maybe I'm a little slow, but it it seems very disjointed and muddled, with some amazing sections but no real flow?
It certainly makes sense here to name every corner to try to get some type of reference!
