Tito Rabat won his first race of the year, holding off a quickly closing Johann Zarco on the final lap Sunday at the Mugello circuit in Italy. Rabat, the current world champion and winner here last year, seized the front seven laps in and managed to hold his position for the duration of the race.
Zarco, who narrowed the gap to the leader to three-tenths of a second on the final lap but could not make a pass, took second and extended his championship points lead to 31 points.
Dominique Aegerter had his best finish of the year with the final podium spot. Sam Lowes, following an early race collision with Simon Corsi that dropped him to 11th, climbed back into fourth by the race's end. Luis Salom held on to fifth fifth ahead of Xavier Simeon in sixth.
A full 10-seconds back from the race winner, Julian Simon came in seventh. Sandro Cortese, (8th), Axel Pons (9th) and Lorenzo Baldassari rounded out the top 10 finishers.
Early in the race, Corsi fell when Lowes plunged up the inside and heavy-braking Turn 1 and collided with the rear of Corsi's bike. Thomas Luthi crashed out of the lead at lap 19.
