2015 Mugello MotoGP FP3 Result: Lorenzo Crushes The Opposition, Marquez Misses Out On Q2

Jorge Lorenzo has smashed the lap record at Mugello to set the fastest time during FP3, taking nearly half a second off Dani Pedrosa's pole record at the track. Lorenzo dominated the session, setting a blistering pace in the mid 1'47s, clearly a cut above the rest. Lorenzo finished ahead of a gaggle of Ducatis, Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso also under the pole record, but by hundredths rather than tenths of a second. The flying Ducatis also managed to put Michele Pirro behind them, the Ducati test rider using a tow from Dovizioso to snatch 4th spot in a hectic and thrilling final few minutes.

Those final few minutes proved to be crucial, determining who would and would not go straight through to Q2. Pol Espargaro put in a late charge to take 6th, ahead of Cal Crutchlow and Dani Pedrosa. The Repsol Honda rider jumped up to 7th late in the session, but was struggling early, coming into the garage after his first run furious with the bike, entirely out of character for the otherwise sanguine Pedrosa. Bradley Smith took 8th spot, just ahead of Valentino Rossi, who had an otherwise steady session. Taking the final ticket to Q2 was Maverick Viñales, the rookie putting in a superb lap to secure 10th. Viñales was 2nd fastest through the second and third sectors of the track, the parts where corner speed and agility rule, only to lose out down the front straight, pushing him down to 10th.

The speed of Viñales and the Ducati trio bumped Marc Marquez out of Q2, the reigning world champion finishing the session in 11th. Marquez started his final lap very fast, but made a mistake in the second sector, losing three seconds in a single go. He will now have to go through Q1, making the task of qualifying close enough to Jorge Lorenzo to be able to stop him very difficult indeed. The last time he had to go through Q1 was here at Mugello in 2013, after his huge crash at the end of the straight. He ended up qualifying in 6th that year.

Lorenzo had on that quick lap.

Medium Tyre, once again the only option, no surprises why Jorge is up top again......could be another snoozer, not looking too good
