Jerez WorldSBK Test Friday Results: Rea Opens A Big Gap To The Yamahas

Jonathan Rea has made his intentions clear on the last day of testing for 2019 for the WorldSBK class, opening up an imposing gap over the rest of the field on his final run. The Kawasaki rider was just over a tenth off his own Superpole record at the Spanish track, but was nearly nine tenths faster than Loris Baz on the Ten Kate Yamaha on Friday, and over eight tenths faster than Toprak Razgatlioglu's second quickest time overall set on Thursday. Razgatlioglu was the only rider not to improve his best time on the second day of the test.

Loris Baz ended the day in second, a fraction quick than Michael van der Mark on the Pata Yamaha, while Alex Lowes was a tenth slower than his former teammate on the Kawasaki. Scott Redding was the fastest of the Ducatis, putting the Aruba.it Panigale V4 R just behind Lowes, and a second off the best time of Rea. Tom Sykes was the best of the BMWs, just under 1.2 behind the reigning world champion.

Behind Rea, the gaps are pretty tight. Just three tenths separates Toprak Razgatlioglu from Tom Sykes in the combined times.

In the WorldSSP class, Andrea Locatelli led the way, ahead of Philipp Oettl and Randy Krummenacher, the Yamaha, Kawasaki, and MV Agusta making it three manufacturers in the top three. South African Steven Odendaal is a respectable fourth, ahead of the Estonian rider Hannes Soomer (nickname the Baltic Bullet).

Jerez WorldSBK Test Thursday Results: Rea Fastest, Yamahas Impress

Five-time champion Jonathan Rea continues to rule the roost in World Superbike championship. The Kawasaki rider topped the timesheets for much of the first day of the test in Jerez, ending the day as fastest, after spending Thursday working on race pace on used tires and on getting the most out of the engine of the Kawasaki ZX-10RR, to take on the might of the Ducati Panigale V4 R.

Two Yamahas finished behind Rea, Toprak Razgatlioglu getting impressively close to the Kawasaki, just a couple of hundredths slower than Rea. Pata Yamaha teammate Michael van der Mark was third quickest, a third of a second behind Rea, and a quarter of a second ahead of Rea's new teammate and Van der Mark's old teammate Alex Lowes on the Kawasaki. Loris Baz put the Ten Kate Yamaha into fifth, a further third of a second behind Lowes.

Scott Redding ended the first day over nine tenths behind Rea, and half a second ahead of his Aruba.it Ducati teammate Chaz Davies. Redding had a crash earlier in the day on the Panigale V4 R, but was still the best of the Ducatis, carrying on the momentum he built up at the first test in Aragon.

Tom Sykes was seventh fastest on the BMW S1000RR, the Yorkshireman continuing to work towards making the BMW more competitive, while his new teammate Eugene Laverty, reunited with former crew chief Marcus Eschenbacher, was half a second behind Sykes on his debut on the BMW.

The Hondas of Alvaro Bautista and Leon Haslam are conspicuous by their absence. The factory Honda team has decided to start the first part of their testing program at private tests, allowing them to develop the brand new Honda CBR1000RR-R out of sight of the media and rival teams. They will only start to test in public in January.

In the WorldSSP class, reigning champion Randy Krummenacher topped the timesheets on the MV Agusta, just edging out newcomer Philipp Oettl on the Kawasaki, who was in turn faster than the fleet of Yamahas behind him, which included Isaac Viñales, Andrea Locatelli, Steven Odendaal, and Hannes Soomer.

Jerez November Test Final Times: Marquez Fastest On Second Day, Viñales Fastest Overall

Marc Marquez finished the second and final day of the Jerez MotoGP test at the top of the timesheets, after a day cut short by the weather. The riders took to the track early, the surface dry and in good condition. But a light rain started shortly after midday, and persisted for most of the afternoon. Though a number of riders got track time in the wet - important to test how the new engines responded on a wet track - any idea of setting a time was forgotten.

That left Maverick Viñales fastest overall, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider having set a scorching time on the first day of the test. Marquez' time on Tuesday was good enough to propel him to second place, a time set despite having a dislocated shoulder which will need surgery on Wednesday in Barcelona.

Alex Rins ended third fastest overall, the Suzuki Ecstar rider a fraction faster than Fabio Quartararo on the Petronas Yamaha. Joan Mir was fifth quickest, while Andrea Dovizioso put the factory Ducati into sixth place.

The teams have now packed up and are heading back to their respective bases. The data gained at this test will be used to refine the prototypes tested here and prepare for the Sepang test in Malaysia, which will be held from 7th-9th of February 2020.

Jerez November Test Tuesday 2pm Times: Rain Stops Progress

Light rain started falling shortly after noon at the Jerez test, preventing any attempt at improving lap times. The track fell mostly silent for the past couple of hours, with only a few brave souls venturing out. Some of the teams are already packing up, but most are still hanging on to see if the track dries later this afternoon, to try go get the most out of this last test before the season ends.
