Maverick Vinales has taken an impressive victory during the Malaysian Moto2 Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit, the rookie rider took the lead from Mika Kallio with four laps remaining and put the hammer down, breaking away and taking his fourth straight podium and third win in the last four races. Tito Rabat did all that he needed to claim the 2014 Moto2 Championship by finishing third, Kallio had passed Rabat with ten laps to go in an attempt to keep the title fight alive, but Rabat only had to finish seventh or higher to wrap up the Championship. He remained calm and focused until the end of the race and celebrated in deserved fashion having been the class rider of the intermediate class this season, he will look to go back-to-back next season as he remains with the Marc VDS team for 2015.
Johan Zarco put in a solid if unspectacular ride to finish in fourth spot ahead of Dominique Aegerter; Aegerter ran with the leading trio in the opening stages of the race but couldn't maintain the pace and drifted back as the race unfolded. Julian Simon took sixth place a tenth behind Aegerter but five seconds clear of German rider Sandro Cortese. Thomas Luthi, Jonas Folger and Marcel Schrotter completed the top ten. Gino Rea crashed at turn one on the opening lap and clashed into Luis Salom and Nico Terol, thankfully he wasn't struck by the field as they came through and he was able to be helped away from the track, Salom and Terol were both able to continue. The race saw a total of eight rider fail to finish.
Rabat's third place means his Championship lead sits at an insurmountable 37 points heading into the final race at Valencia, he edges out his experienced team mate Mika Kallio who was extremely gracious as a Championship runner up following the race, he extended his heartfelt congratulations and praise towards Rabat.
