Race two at Laguna Seca would be started without two riders, and with the red flags brought out the grids for restarts would be further reduced.
Chaz Davies was disappointed not to be able to start race two, being declared until to race having taken a hit to the head in race one. His only complaint was dust in his eyes from the gravel. Aaron Yates also missed out on the start.
The beneficiary of Davies's absence was Davide Giugliano who was promoted to the front row. Unfortunately, this didn't help him as his start was lacklustre. Marco Melandri, on the other hand, got another excellent start, like in the first race, and he propelled himself again to second place behind Tom Sykes. Sylvain Guintoli was third ahead of Eugene Laverty, whose throttle position sensors were fixed between races. Melandri was overtaken by both Guintoli and Laverty as the opening lap progressed, but he was able to claw back third place on the power at the start of the second lap, benefitting from the drive of the Aprilia.
Giugliano, having passed Toni Elias, made the front group a group of five riders, with Elias just out of reach behind him, but over a second from Loris Baz who just couldn't get to grips with Laguna Seca.
On the fifth lap, Sylvain Guintoli made a pass on Tom Sykes, but Sykes used the mid-range power of the Kawasaki to take back his position, putting him offline as they entered the corkscrew. Melandri was able to take the inside line and bravely pass Guintoli for second place behind Sykes, with Laverty and Giugliano behind them being joined by Elias to make a six-bike bunch peeling through the sweeping corners.
On lap eleven, while a gap between third and fourth place slowly developed, Alex Lowes was duelling with Leon Haslam as he could see Jonathan Rea, further ahead, getting away, and he made an overtake born of frustration that put him into the corkscrew too fast to avoid Loris Baz's rear, and he tumbled into the corkscrew, bashing his previously-injured leg hard, ending his weekend and the race. Red flags were brought out to let the ambulance on the track, and everyone went back to the pits to await the restart. Lowes was ok, apart from his leg was swollen; X-rays were negative for fractures.
The restart, seven short laps, put the Aprilias behind Tom Sykes on the front row and once again Marco Melandri got an excellent start. This time, as he was on the front row, he took the lead ahead of Sykes and Sylvain Guintoli, with Jonathan Rea and Toni Elias behind them. Sykes made a few attempts to get a pass to work on Melandri, but nothing worked. On the third lap, the red flags were out again. Sylvain Barrier lost control of his bike coming out of the tricky turn eleven and threw it down the start/finish straight and hit the concrete barrier. The ambulance was brought out and slowly took Barrier to the medical centre.
Another restart, with Melandri leading at the start of the fresh seven-lap dash. Melandri was joined at the front by Tom Sykes and Sylvain Guintoli, with Guintoli making short work of Toni Elias. At the end of the second lap, turn eleven took another victim, but this time it was race leader Marco Melandri. Tom Sykes wasted no time in trying to make a break from Sylvain Guintoli, but Guintoli was equally as determined to make the most of a short race. Guintoli was soon joined by Davide Giugliano who had passed Jonathan Rea and Toni Elias to try for a podium position, and as he tried to match Guintoli's pace, he lost control of his Panigale at the top of the corkscrew and watched with despair as his bike careened across the corkscrew and landed in the middle of the track, after the blind crest.
The entire field, being alerted by good marshalling and a gesticulating Giugliano, missed his stricken bike, polling past it on either side at around 90mph, and Giugliano was able to get back on his discarded Ducati and ride it back to the pits, arriving at the same time as Melandri.
With the track cleared before anyone got close, no red flags were needed, and the race went on. Tom Sykes was able to make quick work of the remaining laps and took another victory ahead of Sylvain Guintoli who maintained his points streak. Jonathan Rea ansi contented an unbroken streak of points this year, getting third in the race and the championship chase.
Further behind, fuelled by the massive attrition rate, EBR got their first World Superbike points with wildcard Larry Pegram finishing in fourteenth place, ahead of Gabor Rizmayer also getting his first world championship point riding as Imre Toth's replacement.
A jubilant Tom Sykes described the race as "carnage", but he heads into the seven week break with a forty-four point lead over Sylvain Guintoli, and will be getting his wrist looked at while there's no racing.
