The weather continued to look threatening for the start of the World Supersport race.
Kenan Sofuoglu took the lead with Jules Cluzel and Michael van der Mark behind him, but at the start of the second lap, behind Sofuoglu the riders fighting for second-place crossed the line three abreast, and Jack Kennedy won the battle for second ahead of Cluzel and Van der Mark. Kennedy hounded Sofuoglu for four laps and forced an error from the multiple world champion and took the lead as Sofuoglu went wide, letting Kennedy and Van der Mark pass him.
On the seventh lap, Michael van der Mark pushed past Jack Kennedy at turn one while Jules Cluzel ran wide, putting himself back to fifth behind Raffaele De Rosa, then doing it again and ending up eighteenth, ruining his race chances.
As the top four settled into a rhythm, PJ Jacobsen joined them, bringing the rain with him. Van der Mark eked out a couple of seconds at the front while Sofuoglu passed Kennedy for second, but then the red flags came out.
The lap was counted back and twelve laps were deemed complete, giving Michael van der Mark the win ahead of a jubilant Jack Kennedy and a disappointed Kenan Sofuoglu. Van der Mark stated that even if the race hadn't been stopped, he was sure of the victory, and his pace backs that up. Sofuoglu may have held second place, but a win was almost certainly not on the cards.
With only four World Supersport rounds left - they don't race at Laguna Seca - Jules Cluzel's lack of points tally gives Michael van der Mark a fifty-three point lead and, with Van der Mark finishing in the top two places on the podium in all rounds but Phillip Island, the title is almost certainly his for the taking.
