Marc Marquez streak of pole positions has finally come to an end. Dani Pedrosa put an end to his Repsol Honda teammate's streak at Barcelona, taking his first pole since this same race last season, and posting a time close to his own pole record from 2013.
Pedrosa took the pole and forced his teammate into an uncharacteristic mistake. Marquez had led early on, then gone on to set a lap that looked good enough to make it eight poles in a row. Shortly after, Pedrosa snatched pole from him, forcing Marquez to go back out for one more try. Pushing hard to try to beat his teammate, Marquez ran a little wide at Turn 1, and was braking for longer on the kerbs than he was used to. When he got back onto the track, he had to try to force the front to make the corner, and the front folded on him. It was Marquez' first crash of the season, and his first since falling off his dirt track bike and breaking a leg back in February. His lap ended up being only good enough for 3rd.
Interjecting himself between the two Repsol Hondas is Jorge Lorenzo, the Movistar Yamaha man finding his feet once again and starting from 2nd for the second race in a row. Heading up the second row is Stefan Bradl, the LCR Honda man not quite having the pace for the front row. Valentino Rossi took 5th, a position he did not look like getting early in Q2, the Italian languishing down in 10th for much of the session. A desperate last lap dash put Rossi onto the second row, the very minimum needed if he is to run at the front on Sunday. Aleix Espargaro rounds out the second row, the Open Yamaha capable of impressive pace on a soft tire
Marquez was not the only rider to crash. Alvaro Bautista had a big and painful highside during Q2, though he got back on and rode. There were fears there could have been crashes during Q1, as spots of rain started to fall during the first session, but they never grew any worse than spots.
