2021 Barcelona MotoE FP1 Result: Granado Gets Going

The MotoE cup returned to the paddock in Montmeló and fresh off his victory in Le Mans, Eric Granado was keen to head back to the top of the timesheets in FP1. The Brazilian topped the session by a tenth of a second from Jordi Torres and with Lukas Tulovic joining them in the top three. Yonny Hernandez held top spot for much of the session before dropping back to fourth, while Mattia Casadei joined the top five. Fermìn Aldeguer returned to the class after a short and reasonably successful outing in Moto2 and kept his speed to go sixth fastest in FP1, ahead of fellow rookie Miquel Pons. Cup leader Alessandro Zaccone finished the morning in 15th position, a second and a half slower than the leader and a couple tenths behind Dominique Aegerter, who was 13th.

2021 Barcelona Moto2 FP1 Result: Augusto Fernandez Back In The Spotlight

The weather in Catalunya wasn’t quite as cheerful as we’re used to but despite the cloud cover, it was warm and dry for the intermediate class’ first outing. After top rookie Raul Fernandez held onto top spot on the timing screens for most of the morning, namesake Augusto Fernandez took over at the top in the closing stages. Teammate Sam Lowes also showed solid early pace as he climbed into second position, a tenth of a second behind his colleague, while Remy Gardner also got ahead of his teammate to claim third. Raul Fernandez dropped to fourth towards the end of FP1, while Marco Bezzecchi joined the top five.

Hector Garzo in sixth was half a second slower than the leader with a tiny gap keeping the Spaniard ahead of compatriot Xavi Vierge and his teammate Jake Dixon. Jorge Navarro rounded out the top 10, with Fabio Di Giannantonio missing out by seven hundredths of a second. The rest of the provisional top 14 positions were occupied by Marcel Schrotter, Nicolò Bulega and Aron Canet. Ai Ogura was the second best rookie in 15th spot, three hundredths of a second ahead of Joe Roberts.

2021 Barcelona MotoGP FP1 Result: Home Sweet Home For Aleix Espargaro

The paddock’s return to Barcelona was greeted with a light and innocent cloud cover and the first session went to one of the home favourites, with Aleix Espargaro demoting Franco Morbidelli from the top of the timesheets in the final couple of minutes of FP1. The Italian settled for second by two hundredths of a second, while Pol Espargaro also made a great start on home soil to climb into third. Maverick Viñales and Johann Zarco completed the top five, with championship leader Fabio Quartararo sixth and four tenths off the lead.

Miguel Oliveira was the lead KTM in seventh position while newly renewed teammate Brad Binder finished 20th. Reigning world champion Joan Mir and the Ducati duo of Jack Miller and Pecco Bagnaia rounded out the top 10 positions, with Takaaki Nakagami missing out by four hundredths of a second. Jorge Martin had a trouble-free return from injury to finish 12th, ahead of Marc Marquez, who inadvertently gave him a little tow to help improve his time. While the Pramac rider makes a long-awaited return, compatriot Alex Rins headed to the surgeon’s table after he crashed while cycling the track on Thursday and injured his arm.

2021 Barcelona Moto3 FP1 Result: Garcia Brings It Home

The dust barely settled over the track in Mugello by the time engines were getting warmed up in Montmeló and the lightweight class were already back in action after a very difficult weekend. Sergio Garcia seemed to enjoy the return to familiar grounds, the Spaniard starting and ending FP1 at the top of the timesheets, two tenths of a second ahead of rookie teammate Izan Guevara. Filip Salac in third was the last rider within half a second of the leader, while John McPhee and Gabriel Rodrigo completed the top five.

Much like the Argentinian rider, Romano Fenati also briefly places his name at the top of the timing screens before dropping back to sixth place, with a small margin ahead of Mugello victor Dennis Foggia. Jaume Masia dropped one position to eighth after a late yellow flag infringement, while the Italian duo of Niccolò Antonelli and Stefano Nepa rounded out the top 10 positions.

Andrea Migno looked set to top the session in the final couple of minutes but a yellow flag infringement pushed him back to 15th place, while championship leader Pedro Acosta had a slower start down in 20th, over a second and a half behind his leading compatriot. Rival Darryn Binder ended the morning in 26th position, largely due to a late tumble at turn 5.

2021 Estoril World Superbike Race 2 Result: Hotting Up

World Superbike race two was the hottest race of the weekend. Twenty one laps of Estoril with less wind than plagued the races earlier.

As the lights went out, Toprak Razgatlioglu jumped the start and triggered Scott Redding who luckily caught the lights. Razgatlioglu  tried to make amends, but he lost four places into turn one. Redding led Jonathan Rea, Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Garrett Gerloff but went a little wide, leaving a gap that let Rinaldi sneak into, lifting Rea's Kawasaki and letting Razgatlioglu, Gerloff and Eugene Laverty pass him. 

On lap two, Michael Ruben Rinaldi took a tight line into turn six, but Garrett Gerloff behind him ran out of track, grabbed the brake, started a mini slapper and ploughed into the Ducati's rear, ending the race for the pair of them and opening another investigation. Toprak Razgatlioglu, right behind Scott Redding, had a gap of a second over Jonathan Rea when he got his penalty for jumping the start; two long lap penalties. 

A long lap penalty, new in World Superbike for 2021, is a small strip of track outside a corner that requires a rider to thread the needle to complete the loop. This adds in the region of two and a half seconds, if the rider gets it right; a significant improvement on the old ride through penalty that required a sojourn through the pits at limiter speed. 

"The Long Lap Penalty is a new introduction to WorldSBK and is available as a penalty to the WorldSBK stewards for infringements that are deemed to be punishable. Available at selected rounds and circuits, a rider who is given a Long Lap Penalty will have to ride through a section of track, outlined clearly, that extends the length of the lap for that rider."

Toprak Razgatlioglu had the foresight to practice the penalty loop in an earlier qualifying session, and on lap five, as Jonathan Rea closed in to Scott Redding, Razgatlioglu took his first penalty and returned to the race in fourth place, behind Chaz Davies and in front of Alex Lowes. A lap later, he took his second penalty, ending up in sixth place, splitting Andrea Locatelli and Michael van der Mark. Over the next few laps, Razgatlioglu passed Locatelli and pulled him and van der Mark up to Lowes, hounding the fourth-placed man, and on lap nine, Razgatlioglu took fourth place from Lowes, over four seconds behind Davies.

At half race distance, Jonathan Rea's SC0 tyre started to look like it might pay off, as he closed the gap a tenth of a second a lap to Scott Redding, but Redding's technique of scrubbing speed, crashing the apex and powering out worked well to hold off Jonathan Rea's tighter corner speed technique, as the point at which Rea could take an advantage had a dirty great red bike in the way, sweeping to the apex, every time he tried. 

On lap fifteen, Jonathan Rea found a way to pass, diving I to turn one, but Rea kept his cool and switched back to the inside line on the power in turn two. A few turns later, Redding took his wide line but couldn't get to the apex and Rea snuck under him to take the lead. Redding then went for a gap on a tightening left hander and ran out of grip as he had to add braking to avoid Rea in front of him. Redding slid off into the gravel, the front running out of grip, and struggled to get back on the track, eventually recovering in sixteenth place.

Jonathan Rea lost time in the fight with Scott Redding which allowed Chaz Davies to close to within a second or so. Davies had a comfortable gap behind him, with Toprak Razgatlioglu settled into third place five seconds behind, with almost two seconds to go to Alex Lowes behind him. 

The three leading riders all maintained their pace and ticked off the last few laps without incident or progress, and Jonathan Rea won his second race of the day, ahead of Chaz Davies and Toprak Razgatlioglu. Alex Lowes finished in fourth place, clear of Andrea Locatelli and Michael van der Mark. Scott Redding finished in fourteenth place.

Redding's crash, with Razgatlioglu's third place drops him down to third in the championship. Jonathan Rea leads Razgatlioglu by thirty five points, with Scott Redding one point further back. Alex Lowes and Chaz Davies round out the top five with Garrett Gerloff's crash relegating him to sixth place.

2021 Mugello MotoGP Race Result: A Fitting Tribute

A minute’s silence for the heart-wrenching loss of Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier was the most touching and unsettling way to start the premier class race and it was equally poignant to see Fabio Quartararo stop at turn 9 to dedicate his outstanding victory to the Swiss rider. The poleman was untouchable throughout the 23 laps, after his only rival on paper abandoned the fight early on and Ducati were left to ponder “what if...”. The rest of the podium positions were settled after a game of musical chairs due to track limits infringements for both podium men on the final lap. In the end, Miguel Oliveira turned his best qualifying of the season into second place on the podium and the best placement for a KTM around Mugello, while reigning world champion Joan Mir makes his return to the podium in third.

After a bit of pre-race track action that saw Enea Bastianini bump into the back of Johann Zarco as they were lining up on the grid, the race got underway without the Italian and with the Frenchman pencilling in an appointment with race direction. Blissfully unaware of all that, Quartararo put his brand new holeshot device to good use but it was still no competition for the Ducati, Pecco Bagnaia arriving at San Donato ahead of the poleman. Oliveira had also made an excellent start to trail the favourites ahead of Zarco, Jack Miller, Brad Binder, Mir and Alex Rins, while second row starter Aleix Espargaro dropped to 9th, ahead of Marc Marquez. Having started 13th after the underwhelming drama of qualifying, Maverick Viñales dropped to 16th after the start. The other party to that story didn’t get much luckier either, Marquez tumbling out of contention on the second lap at turn three and giving his shoulder some extra rest.

Before the replays could catch up with the former world champion’s adventures, Pecco Bagnaia unwittingly decided to follow his elder's example and crashed out at Arrabbiata 2 on that same lap, with much bigger repercussions on the world championship. Despite watching his main rival abandon ship early on, Quartararo did not have the win handed on a plate, as Zarco picked up the baton for Ducati and immediately challenged his compatriot. The Frenchmen traded places over the next couple of laps, with Oliveira, Miller and the Suzukis as patient observers for the time being. Aleix Espargaro and Binder dropped about a second back, with the rest of the field almost two seconds behind, which was particularly worrying for Viñales, who was still 12th and about six seconds off the lead already.

Quartararo seemed to have the upper hand in the battle of the Frenchmen, stretching an eight-tenth gap by lap 6, but Zarco kept reducing the distance on the main straight. Oliveira seemed to be the only rider able to keep up with the leaders in the early stages, as Miller dropped a second back while under attack from the Suzukis and relying on straight line speed to get back ahead of them after every overtake. Rins eventually made a move stick early on lap 8 and Mir followed his example later in the lap, encouraging Binder to come through as well. Left down in 7th position and behind a rapid KTM, Miller couldn’t reply going into turn 1 next time around. While losing them ground on the leading trio, the exchanges also allowed Binder and Aleix Espargaro to join the fun.

Meanwhile, Quartararo extended his advantage at the front to over two seconds from Zarco and Oliveira by lap 10, while the Suzuki-led chasing group had another two seconds to find to join the podium festivities. Other than the occasional swap between Mir and Rins, status quo was maintained for the next few laps and the Suzuki men were still steadily closing the gap to the podium positions, leaving Binder, Miller and Aleix Espargaro behind.

Quartararo looked like he was running away with it by the halfway stage of proceedings, his gap always increasing and comfortably over three seconds ahead of the enlarging battle for second, where Zarco and Oliveira were soon to be joined by Mir and Rins. The Suzukis completely bridged the gap with 8 laps remaining and Oliveira promptly moved into second as he sensed the threat. Zarco held onto the final podium position only one more lap, until Mir attacked at turn 11 but the Pramac man was slightly more successful in keeping Rins at bay for the next couple of laps, the Spaniard only making a move stick with 5 laps remaining. Once he got that job done, Rins pushed to catch up with his teammate but didn’t get to complete that lap and crashed out at the final corner.

With Quartararo almost entering another time zone at the front, all eyes were on the battle for second for the final couple of laps, where Mir was looking for a way around Oliveira while Zarco didn't seemed completely out of podium contention just yet. The final lap came and went without any opportunity for Mir to attack and the trio maintained position until the checkered flag. The track limits curse hit the podium in all three classes today and saw Oliveira get demoted one position for exceeding track limits on the last lap but then Mir was found to have committed the same minor infraction so the original order was reinstated. Zarco missed out on the podium by half a second, with Binder, Miller and Aleix Espargaro crossing the line with considerable distance between them. Benefitting from a late crash from Takaaki Nakagami, Viñales advanced to eighth place, with Danilo Petrucci and Valentino Rossi completing the top 10 in an underwhelming day for the home team.

Quartararo’s joy and Bagnaia’s despair means that the Frenchman heads into round 7 with a 24 point advantage and with Zarco as his main challenger. Bagnaia drops 26 points back, with Miller fourth on a 31 point deficit and Mir climbing into fifth at minus 40.

2021 Estoril World Supersport Race 2 Result: More Close Racing

World Supersport's last race of the weekend would be, yet again, a close affair. 

Federico Caricasulo led into the first turn, but Philipp Oettl and Steven Odendaal snuck underneath him to push him to third. Raffaele de Rosa, Jules Cluzel and Can Oncu were behind them. 

Philipp Oettl set the fastest lap but couldn't shake the riders behind him, with everyone in the top nine in the same group, until the end of the lap when Federico Caricasulo dropped off the leading two to head what was now the second peloton. Dominique Aegerter in the middle of the second group set the fastest lap. Raffaele de Rosa took third place off Caricasulo into turn one, with Jules Cluzel behind him, defending his line from Aegerter behind him.

Raffaele de Rosa set the fastest lap as Dominique Aegerter took fifth from Jules Cluzel. Steven Odendaal had a Kawasaki ahead of him and behind him, with Philipp Oettl and Raffaele de Rosa on either end, covered by under half a second. Caricasulo was now over a second behind the podium places, with Aegerter and Cluzel hungering to get past.At the start of lap seven, two tenths of a second covered the leading trio as Aegerter took fourth place from Caricasulo. 

On lap nine, Aegerter started to close on the leading trio, leaving fifth-placed Caricasulo to hold up the riders behind him. Aegerter made the leading group four-long, and less than half a second covered the group. In spite of his pace, Aegerter couldn't pass any riders in front, with the tight group covered only by a third of a second. Aegerter attempted a pass for third place, but de Rosa held off the brakes just a touch longer. 

Lap twelve, and less than two tenths covered the four leading bikes, and as they slipstreamed in to the first turn, Raffaele de Rosa slipped under two bikes, and took the lead, followed by Philipp Oettl on the second Kawasaki. Oettl and de Rosa swapped places, and Aegerter took second off de Rosa at the timing beam, bit couldn't hold second place into the first turn. Jules Cluzel finally despatched Federico Caricasulo, but he had a one second gap two the four leaders.

A lap later, Cluzel closed the gap to the leading group as Aegerter passed de Rosa into turn six and at the start of lap fifteen, Aegerter slipped into the lead into turn one, and de Rosa passed Oettl a few turns later. Odendaal fancied some of that and knocked Oettl down to fourth place, half a second off the lead. Luca Bernardi took fifth off Jules Cluzel. At turn six, an aggressive pass from Raffaele de Rosa pushed Aegerter.

Then, he crashed. 

Rafaelle de Rosa led the race only to lose the front into turn nine, handing the lead to Dominique Aegerter who briefly lost the lead at turn six to Steven Odendaal only to take it back a turn later. Luca Bernardi caught and passed Philipp Oettl. Steven Odendaal then stuck his hand up as Jules Cluzel crashed out behind him, recovering several places behind. The damage was done before the last lap and Dominique Aegerter took the win with Luca Bernardi less than four tenths of a second behind him. Philipp Oettl took third place a second off the win with Manuel Gonzalez right behind him.

Steven Odendaal's mechanical failure ended his run of wins and Raffaele de Rosa and Jules Cluzel crashing out makes the championship fight unpredictable. Dominique Aegerter's win puts him within six points of Steven Odendaal at the top, with Philipp Oettl seventeen points behind him. Luca Bernardi's second place promotes him to fourth place in the title.

2021 Mugello Moto2 Race Result: Last Lap Heartache

It must have been unimaginably difficult for the intermediate class to line up on the grid just as news broke of the desperately sad passing of Jason Dupasquier, but line up they did and put on an honourable show in Mugello. The podium was bright orange once again, this time with Remy Gardner picking up the win after a race-long chase of teammate Raul Fernandez, the rookie only giving up victory on the final lap and by the smallest of margins. Marco Bezzecchi did not feature in the victory battle but got to show off his beautiful home race livery in parc fermé after inheriting third place.

Raul Fernandez had made an excellent start from pole position and Gardner also got a great launch from second row to trail his teammate into turn 1. Tony Arbolino kept close after a good start of his own, followed by Jorge Navarro, Sam Lowes, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Bezzecchi. The Red Bull KTM Ajo tag team quickly started to edge ahead of Arbolino so Lowes had to take it upon himself to get past the Italian and reel in the leaders. While Lowes reduced the gap to Gardner to under half a second, Fernandez was attempting an early escape from his teammate, keeping another half a second ahead. Behind the socially-distanced leading trio, Arbolino struggled to keep the early pace going and soon dropped behind compatriots Di Giannantonio and Bezzecchi. The rookie was left with a safe net of one second to the next man down the road, Joe Roberts, but the American was steadily closing in on the top five, also aided by some early crashes from Jorge Navarro and Xavi Vierge amongst the chasing group.

Raul Fernandez started lap 8 with an eight tenth advantage to Gardner, with the Australian soon to come under fire from Lowes. The animated battle started on lap 10 and the exchanges ended with Lowes provisionally picking up the chase but the real winner was Fernandez, who extended his gap to two seconds. It also very slightly helped Di Giannantonio, who had dropped almost a second and a half back on the podium battle, leaving Bezzecchi over two seconds behind. Arbolino also struggled to keep up the pace and dropped within striking distance of Roberts, the American demoting the Italian for sixth position on lap 10. Arbolino continued to fade and soon allowed teammate Marcel Schrotter to gap him as well.

Back at the front, Lowes was steadily reducing the gap to the leader to start the final half of the race only one second back on Fernandez. Gardner kept close to the British rider as he bridged the gap but Di Giannantonio couldn’t keep the home hero dream going, crashing out of fourth place at the final corner with 10 laps remaining. With Bezzecchi and Roberts engaged in battle over six seconds back, the podium configuration seemed pretty much set but the order was yet to be decided, as the leading trio drew ever closer.

Once the gap at the front dropped to eight tenths of a second, it seemed to settle there for a couple of laps but Lowes buckled under the pressure first, crashing out at Arrabbiata 1 with 6 laps remaining. That left Gardner one second behind his teammate and he did a solid job to pick up the chase, almost glued to the back of the sister machine only three laps later. Eight seconds behind the victory battle, Roberts found himself in podium positions, but Bezzecchi was tempted by a home podium and started exchanging places with the American. It seemed like a fun battle on the timing screens but we’ve not seen much of it as all eyes were on the inseparable leading duo.

Gardner bided his time and the first and only overtake attempt came on the final lap, the Australian’s superior speed out of Arrabbiata 2 allowing him to line up a decisive move into turn 10. Gardner defended beautifully to the finish line but took the checkered flag only one hundredth of a second ahead of Fernandez. Roberts crossed the line third but got demoted one position due to slightly exceeding track limits on the final lap and Bezzecchi inherited the final podium spot. Schrotter joined the top 5 ahead of rookies Ai Ogura, Arbolino and Cameron Beaubier, with Hafizh Syahrin and Stefano Manzi rounding out the top 10 places. A notable and pretty remarkable mention goes to Fermìn Aldeguer, who grabbed a few points in his first Moto3 race with 12th position.

Gardner’s victory extended his lead in the championship to a still minimal six points from teammate Fernandez, while Bezzecchi is 26 points behind and Lowes loses more ground, trailing the leader by 48 points.

2021 Estoril World Superbike Superpole Race Result: Short And Sweet

The World Superbike Superpole race was ten short laps with not all riders choosing to use the dedicated sprint race tyre. 

Jonathan Rea, running an SC0 tyre, got to turn one third, but forced his way under Toprak Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding to take the lead mid-corner. Scott Redding took the lead in turn five. Making the most of the SCX sprint tyre. On lap two, Razgatlioglu passed Rea and Redding into turn one, but Rea covered the inside line into turn two and led out of turn three after setting the fastest lap. Razgatlioglu took the lead a couple of turns later. Redding took the lead into turn one, but Razgatlioglu defended on the brakes to retain the lead.

Garrett Gerloff and Michael Ruben Rinaldi were in touch with the three-way fight over the lead, with Alex Lowes almost a second behind them in sixth place. Toprak Razgatlioglu set the fastest lap again and held his lead into lap four. Scott Redding made a mistake into turn six, with Rea nearly following him, letting Rea and Gerloff past on the inside. Rea set the fastest lap in second position on lap four, with a second covering the leading five riders. 

Rea set the fastest lap again and, into turn one of lap six, he attempted a pass into turn one to take the lead from Razgatlioglu who lifted his rear wheel on the brakes and had to release the brakes briefly, letting Rea take the lead. Alex Lowes latched onto the back of the leading five and started looking for a way past fifth-placed Rinaldi. Tom Sykes and Eugene Laverty were over two seconds behind the slash and dash at the front in seventh and eighth. Into lap eight, Redding took third back from Gerloff as a gap appeared in front of Rinaldi with the pace of the leading four in the 1'36 as Rea set the fastest lap again, escaping to eight tenths of a seconds clear of Razgatlioglu. 

Jonathan Rea opened the last lap with a nine tenths of a second lead over Toprak Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding. Garrett Gerloff was too far behind to disrupt the fight between Toprak Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding, but he was clear enough of Michael Ruben Rinaldi to assure his fourth place.

Jonathan Rea took the win on the harder tyre, ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding. Jonathan Rea leads Scott Redding in the championship by thirteen points, and with winning on the SC0 tyre, probably gives Redding hard choices for race two. Toprak Razgatlioglu closes to thirteen points behind Scott Redding with Alex Lowes and Garrett Gerloff consolidating their fourth and fifth places.

2021 Mugello Moto3 Race Result: A Rollercoaster Of Emotion

It was a tough start to race day, with the heart-breaking absence of Jason Dupasquier following his serious accident on Saturday and even the weather felt like sparing the lightweight class more trouble. Beautiful sunshine embraced the circuit over the 20 laps and Mugello offered a classic Moto3 rough and tumble for glory, which ended with the Italian being waved to unfortunately empty grandstands by Dennis Foggia. The home favourite played a clever game throughout the race and rode an impeccable last lap to claim a first victory of the season ahead of Jaume Masia. Gabriel Rodrigo joins them on the podium for only the second time in his career, helped by his best qualifying position of the season.

Pedro Acosta also made the best of his first front row start and reached San Donato first once the lights went out, ahead of Rodrigo and poleman Tatsuki Suzuki. Foggia first took control of the pack with a slipstream on the main straight at the start of lap 2, getting ahead of the front row starters and 12 other riders who were making up the lead group. Amongst them was Darryn Binder, who climbed up to 6th having started 15th, while teammate John McPhee dropped a couple places to 13th. Andrea Migno was unfortunately not part of the line-up, as he crashed out at turn 7 on the first lap, together with Deniz Öncü, Carlos Tatay and Maximilian Kofler.

Acosta reclaimed top billing on lap 3 but Foggia hit back on lap 4 and the duo continued trading places for a couple of laps. Arrabbiata 1 and San Donato were the preferred overtaking places for the likes of Romano Fenati and Suzuki, who soon got involved in the battle for the lead, but Foggia started lap 6 at the front once more. Having briefly dropped to the back of the top 10, Acosta quickly found his way back into the battle, with Rodrigo and Binder in close proximity. Ayumu Sasaki, Stefano Nepa, Jeremy Alcoba, Masia, Sergio Garcia, Kaito Toba, McPhee, Filip Salac and Niccolò Antonelli were still within reach of the leaders but yet to make much noise, with the next group over six seconds back.

Acosta contested the lead around turn 1 on lap 8 but Foggia still wanted didn’t allow him much time in the limelight and quickly fought back to lead across the line next time around, even holding back the slipstreamers into San Donato. Despite a few more attempts at demoting him, the Italian kept ahead of a sizeable 15-man group for the next few laps. Most notably within that group, Masia and Garcia had advanced towards the business end by the halfway mark of proceedings.

Suzuki eventually picked up the baton to lead going into the second half of the race, with Foggia dropping out of the top 5 for the first time since the lights went off but the Italian remedied that with 8 laps remaining. Determined to avoid further drama, Foggia pushed at the front to bring some colour to the timing screens but Acosta & co didn’t let him get away and continued to show their intentions. A feisty Suzuki spiced things up on lap 14, but nothing like the action into turn 1 the next time around, when McPhee shot into the lead from well outside the top 5. He didn’t last there long, as Fenati found a way past, while the likes of Foggia and Acosta found themselves with work to do from outside the top 10 with 5 laps remaining.

Binder had the advantage going into those final five laps, with a gaggle of KTMs on his tail. While Foggia took a while longer to recover, Acosta was leading the way only one lap later, having yoyo-ed through the leading group all afternoon. With the big pack still intact, the order changed with every blink of an eye but Acosta, Fenati and Binder got the overwhelming screen time at the front in the closing stages.

Foggia started the final lap back in the lead, while Acosta got relegated to 11th in the heat of battle on the previous lap. While the podium battle got heated behind him, Foggia managed to stretch a couple tenths at the front and slipstream made no difference in the end, the Italian taking the checkered flag three hundredths of a second ahead of Masia, with Rodrigo another tenth back. Sasaki and Binder completed the top five, while Fenati dropped to sixth. Acosta recovered to finish seventh but both him and Garcia got penalised to drop one position for exceeding track limits on the final lap, leaving McPhee to claim seventh place. The Spanish duo completed the top 10 together with poleman Suzuki.

Despite missing out on podium positions, Acosta maintains his championship lead, 52 points ahead of teammate Masia, who climbed five positions with today’s podium. At the end of a difficult weekend, Sasaki joins the top three, 54 points behind the leader, while Garcia drops to fourth, another point down.
