Maverick Vinales won one the most exciting Moto3 finales in recent history taking both the race win and with it, the 2013 World Championship in Valencia, Spain.

Jonas Folger finished second, just nipping third-place finisher Alex Rins at the line. Rins, who led the race late and briefly held the lead in the final lap, finished the race in third, leaving him second in the championship. Luis Salom, the championship points leader before this final round, crashed on lap 15 but remounted to finish 14th.  He finished third in the championship.

Vinales, who is graduating to Moto2 next year, finished the year with three wins – three fewer than Rins – but a remarkable 15 podiums in 17 races. Rounding out the top five were fourth-place Alex Marquez -- younger brother to MotoGP rookie sensation Marc -- and Efren Vazquez in fifth.

Early on, the race played out as expected with top three championship contenders out front. With 17 laps to go, Salom led Vinales with Rins in third. Two laps later, Vinales grabbed the lead. Four laps after that, Vinales and Salom swapped places twice. Then Salom made a slight mistake and ran wide with 11 laps to go. Rins slipped inside and into second place.

One lap later, disaster struck for Salom. Riding behind Rins in and third place, he lost the front of his KTM and low-sided into the gravel trap at Turn 5. He remounted quickly but the championship would be lost.

Folger closed on the battle between Rins and Vinales but stayed clear of the fight. During the final three laps, the lead swapped hands. Then on the final lap, Rins grabbed the lead once again. Vinales waited for the final corner to make a decisive move and grab the race and championship from his fellow countryman. Folger slipped into second as Rins ran wide.
