2013 Motegi Moto2 QP Result: Mixed Conditions, Mixed Results

Full report and results below:

Mika Kallio has taken pole position following the Moto2 qualifying session at the Motegi circuit in Japan, after a weekend of thick fog, heavy rain, low cloud and an earthquake, the sun that decided to emerge for the first time and saw the track dry out quite a lot throughout proceedings. The ice cold temperatures meant that it didn't quite dry enough for the use of slick tyres and it was Marc VDS rider Kallio that slipped and slid his way to pole position ahead of fellow wet weather experts Xavier Simeon and Johann Zarco.

The surprise results continued as Simone Corsi took fourth ahead of the remarkable story of Rafid Topan Sucipto who finished fifth, the Indonesian rider who has had a truly difficult first season in Moto2 earned a fantastic second row starting spot despite a light crash late on. The form rider of the second half of the season Esteve Rabat completed row two as his team mate and championship leader Pol Espargaro had to settle for seventh place. He will line up ahead of Dominique Aegerter and Danny Kent, who completed the third row.

Riding with a cast on his fractured and pinned left wrist and trying to keep his championship fight alive, Scott Redding managed to qualify in a brave fifteenth place, but tomorrows race is looking like it will be a stern challenge for the young Brit. The session saw crashes for Azlan Shah and local wild card rider Tetsuta Nagashima, both were thankfully uninjured.

Ant West is a guy who really thrives with rain. The more of it on track, the bigger his comparative advantage. It didn't rain any more during Moto2 QP, even the sun came out a little, and the track started to get much less wet.
