Qatar MotoGP Test Saturday Final Times: Rins Leads Suzuki Clean Sweep

Alex Rins has topped the timesheets at the end of the first day of the MotoGP test at Qatar, the Suzuki Ecstar rider getting half a second under the race lap record, and within two tenths of the best time set at the test here last year. But Rins was over a tenth of a second quicker than his fastest lap of the 2019 test, showing solid improvement.

Rins' advantage was small, however: the Spaniard was just two thousandths of a second quicker than his Suzuki teammate Joan Mir, who ended the day in second spot. Monster Energy Yamaha's Maverick Viñales followed close behind, the Spaniard just three hundredths of a second off the time of Rins, and nearly two tenths quicker than Danilo Petrucci on the factory Ducati.

Franco Morbidelli was the second Yamaha home, the Petronas Yamaha rider fifth on the A-Spec Yamaha, less than a quarter of a second behind Rins. Reigning champion Marc Marquez ended the day as sixth fastest, the Repsol Honda rider a tenth of a second behind Morbidelli. Marquez led the other brace of Yamahas, Valentino Rossi fractionally ahead of Fabio Quartararo.

Pecco Bagnaia was the second fastest Ducat on the day, three quarters of a second behind Alex Rins, and a few hundredths head of Aleix Espargaro on the Aprilia RS-GP.

Qatar MotoGP Test Saturday 5pm Times: Action Picks Up As Sun Starts To Set

The Qatar MotoGP test got off to a slow start as expected, with nothing moving on track until an hour after the track had opened. First to venture out was the rookie Iker Lecuona, soon after joined by other rookies.

At the 5pm mark, four hours into the test, it was Maverick Viñales atop the timesheets, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider still four tenths off the race lap record at a track where he has spent the winter training. The two factory Ducatis follow, Dannilo Petrucci a fraction quicker than teammate Andrea Dovizioso, and both less than a tenth slower than Viñales. Dovizioso has been testing a new exhaust on the GP20, although there is more of a buzz at the Pramac garage, where Jack Miller is continuing to work on the rear-lowering system based on the holeshot device.

That device works in the same way as the holeshot device, making the rear squat for better acceleration, but Miller appears to be able to activate it while riding.

Joan Mir is the fastest Suzuki rider, Alex Rins having only just taken to the track. Mir is currently in fourth, ahead of Franco Morbidelli on the A-spec Petronas Yamaha. Aleix Espargaro continues to post impressive times on the brand new Aprilia RS-GP, less than three tenths slower than Viñales, and already quicker than his best race lap at Qatar in March last year.

Testing finishes at 8pm local time, with the period around 6pm, which is race time in Qatar, expected to be the most important.

Jerez Moto3 Test Friday Times: Ogura Edges Out McPhee

If the Moto2 lap record was broken at the Jerez test, the Moto3 pole record was absolutely destroyed, with 15 riders circulating below Gabriel Rodrigo's best pole time of 1'45.745 from 2019. Ai Ogura ended the test as fastest overall, over a second under the lap time of Rodrigo, while Petronas Sprinta's John McPhee was just five hundredths slower than the Honda Team Asia rider.

Current pole record holder Gabriel Rodrigo finished the day and the test in third, eight tenths under his own lap record, and just ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki and Sergio Garcia. Raul Fernandez was the first of the KTM riders, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider behind a fleet of Hondas.

The Moto2 and Moto3 riders now pack up and head to the desert. They face a final test next weekend, before the 2020 season opener on 8th March.

Tom Luthi has ended the Jerez Moto2 test as fastest, smashing the existing pole record by over eight tenths of a second in the process. The Intact GP rider was fast over a flying lap on Friday, after spending Thursday focusing on used tires, and posting an impressive race pace.

Gresini's Nicolo Bulega ended the day in second place, though he finished third overall on the combined standings, behind Marco Bezzecchi, who put in a very quick lap on Thursday. Tetsuta Nagashima was third fastest on Friday on the Red Bull Ajo Kalex, finishing ahead of Xavi Vierge on the Petronas Kalex. Jorge Navarro was the fastest of the Speed Up riders on the last day of the test. Rookie Aron Canet finished seventh on Friday, but ends the test a very impressive fifth overall, and fastest Speed Up rider.

Red Bull KTM Ajo's Jorge Martin ended the day in third on the Kalex, the Spaniard still suffering with a leg injury picked up at a private test, while Thomas Luthi was fourth quickest, half a second behind Bezzecchi.

Petronas rider Jake Dixon suffered a heavy crash, breaking a finger in his right hand, and was forced to fly home for medical treatment.
