Jorge Lorenzo got the weekend of the Japanese Grand Prix off to a good start, topping the timesheet in the first session of MotoGP free practice under clear and sunny skies. His rival for the title Dani Pedrosa took 2nd, just over a tenth behind the Factory Yamaha man and ahead of the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha of Andrea Dovizioso, a man with an outstanding record at Motegi. After a false start - a problem with his bike left him stranded at the trackside before he had even completed his first lap - Casey Stoner was soon back up to speed, securing 4th spot, but still three quarters of a second off the pace of Lorenzo.
