Results and summary of qualifying for the MotoGP class at the Motorland Aragon circuit:
Jorge Lorenzo has taken his fifth pole position of the year, just holding off Dani Pedrosa in a close battle during qualifying for tomorrow's MotoGP race at Aragon. Lorenzo deposed Dani Pedrosa from pole, the Repsol Honda man having recovered from an early crash to find some real speed at the end of the session, but after Lorenzo had dropped him back to 2nd, Pedrosa's attempt to retake pole stranded when he ran into Valentino Rossi on his very last lap.
Cal Crutchlow will start from 3rd on the grid, the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha man having led for much of qualifying, only losing his place in the final minutes when Pedrosa and Lorenzo ramped up the pace. Crutchlow's pace was close to that of the two leaders, though, the Englishman finishing less than a tenth behind Pedrosa, and less than two tenths behind Jorge Lorenzo.
Ben Spies heads up the second row, the second factory Yamaha rider benefiting from the test which Yamaha had here just under a month ago, as does Stefan Bradl, the LCR Honda man grabbing a strong 5th position. Andrea Dovizioso will start from 6th, the Tech 3 man the last rider to get within a second of the time of Lorenzo.
Jonathan Rea put in his best session yet on the Repsol Honda, ending in 7th, just a second behind Lorenzo and under a second from his temporary teammate Dani Pedrosa. Rea finished ahead of the two factory Ducatis, Valentino Rossi taking 8th ahead of Nicky Hayden, after both Ducati men suffered crashes earlier in the session.
The qualifying session took place on a completely dry, but very cold track, the rain which had been forecasted holding off, the clouds threatening rain but never producing it. With dry weather predicted for Sunday, the dry set up time was extremely welcome for the teams after earlier sessions had all been badly affected by rain.
