2020 Teruel Moto2 FP1 Result: Fernandez Jumps Ahead

The intermediate class enjoyed some pleasant conditions in the first practice session of Aragon Part 2 and for a long time it was the same suspects as last week at the business end of the timesheets, until Augusto Fernandez picked up some speed to end the session on top. Teammate Sam Lowes made it an even better morning for the Marc VDS squad, one tenth of a second slower than Fernandez, having led most of the session before that. Fabio Di Giannantonio proved his speed around Motorland once again, up to third, two tenths off top spot and narrowly ahead of a consistently impressive Jake Dixon.

Joe Roberts and Lorenzo Baldassarri made late progress to join the top six, pushing back Marco Bezzecchi. Title contenders Luca Marini and Enea Bastianini spent some time inside the top five but got demoted by late attacks from the likes of Jorge Navarro and Remy Gardener, who picked up eighth and ninth on the timesheets, leaving the Italians tenth and eleventh.

The likes of Marcel Schotter, Jorge Martin or Tom Luthi had a slow start outside of the top 14 positions, the Spaniard 17th with the Intact GP teammates 15th and 22nd on the timesheets.

2020 Teruel MotoGP FP1 Result: Marquez Fronts Honda Attack

Motorland Aragon welcomed back the premier class with a clearer sky and warmer asphalt than last time out and the Hondas seemed to be thriving in the not-so-early morning. Alex Marquez started the session at the top of the timesheets and after an interruption from colleague Takaaki Nakagami, Marquez reclaimed top spot for the final couple of minutes. That final time attack put him over four tenths ahead of his rivals and the Spaniard looked on course to increase that advantage when the front end gave way at the final turn on his final flying lap. Although not many were tempted by a late time attack, the top four featured three Hondas, Nakagami in second and Stefan Bradl in fourth sandwiching Joan Mir in third. While Bradl was a touch more inconsistent, the top three showed good consistent pace throughout the session.

Franco Morbidelli was the fastest Yamaha in fifth, seven hundredths of a second ahead of Maverick Vinales, while Jack Miller was once again the leading Ducati in seventh position. Alex Espargaro and Pol Espargaro finished within half a tenth of each other and over one second off top spot, while Cal Crutchlow rounded out the top ten despite ending his session on the service road.

Last weeks’ victor Alex Rins finished the morning session in 12th spot, with Andrea Dovizioso 16th and Fabio Quartararo another place back, not being tempted by a late time attack.

2020 Teruel Moto3 FP1 Result: Masia Picks Up Where He Left Off

A nap or two later, Motorland Aragon welcomed the circus back in town for a second go at the trophies and it was many of the same names hogging then limelight early on in the lightweight class. Jaume Masia is on a roll following his victory last time out and topped the first practice session on his final flying, one tenth of a second faster than previous session leader Romano Fenati. Deniz Oncu continues to progress up the timesheets, making a late jump to third, two tenths off the lead.

Albert Arenas in fourth position was the final rider to post a time within half a second of the leader, while Tony Arbolino made a good start on his return to action following his week of state-mandated quarantine after being in the proximity of a Covid-19 positive case. The Italian’s first outing in Aragon left him fifth, six tenths off the lead and half a tenth ahead of John McPhee. Jeremy Alcoba, Celestino Vietti, Gabriel Rodrigo and Tatsuki Suzuki rounded out the top ten.

Early session leaders Raul Fernandez and Andrea Migno dropped out of the top 15 in the final time attack, down to 18th and 20th respectively, while title contender Ai Ogura had a low key morning down in 24th position.

2020 Estoril World Superbike Race Two Result: Great Emotions

The last race of the year, 21 laps of Estoril, would determine the manufacturer's championship, with Kawasaki leading Ducati by eighteen points, leaving both in with a chance of taking it. 

Toprak Razgatlioglu led Garrett Gerloff, Michael van der Mark and Chaz Davies into turn one, but Davies passed both Gerloff and van der Mark to slot into second place behind the race one winner. At turn nine, Jonathan Rea and Michael van der Mark clashed, with Scott Redding sneaking under both of them as they clashed, but Rea took to the outside of turn thirteen and took fourth place off Redding as Chaz Davies took the lead into turn one. 

As Jonathan Rea set three fastest laps in succession, Garrett Gerloff hit one of only two proper left handers, turn four, with a cold tyre and slid his bike into the gravel. Jonathan Rea caught up the lead two, building a gap of over a second over Scott Redding. Rea set the fastest lap again on lap six and, on lap eight, passed Toprak Razgatlioglu down the straight, but the Yamaha rider was able to outbreak the world champion to retain second place. Chaz Davies broke free from the pair fighting behind him, and Rea saw his chance of a win escaping if he couldn't pass Razgatlioglu. Rea saw his chance and went for a gap that then closed, Rea carrying a little too much speed. Rea's front tyre gave up and Rea went down, gently tapping Razgatlioglu's Yamaha on its way off the track. Razgatlioglu stayed on and only lost three quarters of a second to Redding. Kawasaki now had to hope Alex Lowes, in a comfortable fifth place, or Xavi Fores, fighting in eighth place with Leon Haslam and Michael Ruben Rinaldi either side of him, finished higher than ninth place if they were to take the manufacturers title. Jonathan Rea rejoined in sixteenth place but not at the same pace he had before his off. 

Chaz Davies, halfway through the race, set the fastest lap of 1'36.806 as he bolted off in the distance as Scott Redding started to close the two second gap a few tenths a lap. On lap fourteen, Loris Baz, having caught up with the seventh place battle, started having braking issues and eventually took to the escape road to retire, only to find Jonas Folger blindly followed him. Baz gesticulated to Folger that his bike was broken and Folger returned to the race three places down.

On lap sixteen, Alex Lowes crashed out at turn seven, turning all Kawasaki eyes to Xavi Fores in the hope that he could net them the manufacturer's title. Fores was in the middle of a battle for seventh place, constantly swapping places with Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Leon Haslam.

Five laps from the end, Scott Redding had caught Toprak Razgatlioglu, the pair three seconds behind Chaz Davies, and Redding started to look for a way past. On lap nineteen of twenty one, Scott Redding passed Toprak Razgatlioglu into turn one but he had to fight the Turkish rider's constant attention as Razgatlioglu tried to take second place back and thwart Ducati's chance of a one-two finish. 

As the last lap started, Chaz Davies was almost three seconds clear in the lead with Scott Redding finally breaking free from Toprak Razgatlioglu. Michael van der Mark was a further six seconds behind with Alvaro Bautista five seconds behind him. The fight for sixth place, between Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Leon Haslam, Xavi Fores and Federico Caricasulo was a further six seconds behind Bautista. 

As Chaz Davies won his last race for Ducati, they held out his pinboard reading "Thanks for the great emotions". Scott Redding finished second behind his exiting teammate and said he was happier that Davies won than he would have been if he'd taken the victory himself. Toprak Razgatlioglu took his third podium of the weekend and held on to fourth place in the championship. Xavi Fores finished in eighth place, while Jonathan Rea ended up scoring two points in fourteenth place. Fores and Rea were pulled off track by Kawasaki and given t-shirts commemorating their manufacturer's title and Rea dropped to his knees to thank Fores for saving their title. A very strange end to a very strange year.

In other battles, Alvaro Bautista and Leon Haslam finished on the exact same number of points, leaving the Honda tamales to determine who came out on top by their best result, giving Bautista the honour of ninth place. Chaz Davies, third in the championship and winner of two races this year, has not got a ride for 2021.

2020 Aragon MotoGP Race Result: A Spectacular Homecoming

With King Marquez’s Aragon crown up for grabs, many gladiators turned up to the battle but the home favourites proved their worth and the crown almost stayed in the family. Alex Rins and Alex Marquez might have started on the fourth row of the grid but the old rivals made fantastic comebacks to dispute victory to the final corner, where Rins became the eighth different winner of the season. The youngest Marquez came within three tenths of a second of victory, with Joan Mir completing a perfect podium for the virtual home crowd, while also becoming favourite in the world championship battle.

The start told a somewhat different story, with Maverick Vinales fastest off the line, ahead of poleman Fabio Quartararo and with Franco Morbidelli joining his teammates at the front. Front row starter Cal Crutchlow dropped like a stone in the first few turns, out of the top ten and in opposing fortunes to Rins, who went from 10th to 4th in only a couple of corners. Having started 13th, Andrea Dovizioso headed straight into the top eight and once again battling rookie Marquez in the early stages.

Vinales avenged every other start he made this year, stretching a gap of seven tenths by the end of lap one, with the Petronas duo pushing to catch up but under assault from Rins by lap three. The Spaniard demoted Morbidelli for third and reeled in Quartararo, while the Italian was dropping into the clutches of Mir, Jack Miller and a fast charging Alex Marquez, who had quickly disposed of Takaaki Nakagami and Dovizioso.

Quartararo struggled to bring the gap to Vinales under half a second and Rins was sniffing around him until the end of lap 5, when the Frenchman left the door wide open at turn 16 and Rins picked up the chase, immediately reeling Vinales in. Quartararo dropped a few tenths back and got caught up by Morbidelli and Mir, the trio soon engaging in battle and Mir sweeping past the Petronas men by the end of lap 7. Alex Marquez took a few laps to get past Miller, dropping a second on the victory battle ahead but the home favourite pushed to remedy that and was soon hounding Quartararo for fifth place.

Back at the front, Rins finally attacked for the lead at the final turn, entering lap nine in charge of proceedings, while Vinales had another Suzuki nightmare coming, with Mir only half a second behind. Another second behind the podium positions, Alex Marquez made quick work of both Petronas men on lap nine while demonstrating the hottest pace amongst the leaders. The Spaniard soon got a one second gap on the duo and kept pushing to join the leading trio. Meanwhile, Quartararo was about to get in trouble with a big group hoping to claim his sixth spot, Nakagami in prime position and getting the move done at the final turn on lap 11. Dovizioso seemed stuck at the bottom of the top ten, with Miller and Crutchlow for company, but the group was quickly catching up with his main championship rival.

At the halfway point, the victory battle looked like becoming a foursome, Vinales, Mir and Marquez quickly closing in on Rins. Mir and Vinales provided some of the entertainment on lap 13 and it ended with Vinales getting pushed off the podium by Mir and Marquez and seemingly losing touch with the leaders. Morbidelli was in a lonely fifth, while Quartararo was getting swallowed by the chasing pack. The Frenchman left the top ten with 10 laps remaining and continued to lose positions at an alarming rate, out of point scoring places just one lap later.

Against all odds but not uncharacteristic for this crazy 2020, the Suzukis entered the remaining eight laps defending a 1-2 from Alex Marquez, with Vinales two seconds back. The leading trio played nice for the next few laps, Rins keeping a safe half second gap on his teammate as the race entered unknown territory in terms of tyre wear. Marquez eventually attacked Mir at turn 16 with six laps remaining and immediately brought the gap to Rins to under half a second, while leaving Mir in his shadow.

The former Moto3 teammates started the final four laps separated by less than two tenths of a second but a major moment at the final turn with three laps left slowed down Marquez’s charge a bit. However, the rookie did not give up the fight and started the final lap right behind Rins, but the Suzuki man kept him at bay until the finish line to secure victory by only two tenths from his old rival. Vinales was closing in on Mir on the final lap but the Suzuki defended to the line and snatched the championship lead. Nakagami crossed the line fifth, ahead of Morbidelli and Dovizioso and with Crutchlow, Miller and Zarco rounding out the top ten.

A bruised and struggling Quartararo finished 18th, relinquishing the world championship lead to Mir by 6 points, with Vinales 12 points down and Dovizioso saved by the bell once more, only 15 points behind the leader.

2020 Estoril World Supersport Race Two Result: Third Place Up For Grabs

The last race of the year would also be one of the best of the year, with eighteen laps of the shortest track of the year being the setting for the battle for third between Jules Cluzel and Philipp Oettl as Andrea Locatelli and Lucas Mahias, Superbike-bound for 2021, have locked down the top two places.

Lucas Mahias led his teammate Philipp Oettl with Raffaele de Rosa, Andrea Locatelli and Jules Cluzel behind them. On lap two, Mahias tried to break free at the front, but Oettl held on to him. Raffaele de Rosa set the fastest lap with a 1'40.772 in the middle of the leading back of five, with Cluzel at the back of the pack almost a second clear of Steven Odendaal and Isaac Viñales.

Philipp Oettl closed up to Mahias, setting the fastest lap with a 1'40.707 as the leading five stayed in a group covered by under a second. At the start of lap five, Oettl took the lead into turn one, with De Rosa, Locatelli and Cluzel being joined by Isaac Viñales who set the fastest lap with a 1'40.171 to make the leading group six riders deep.

At the start of lap six, Lucas Mahias briefly held the lead down the straight, but he entered turn one on the outside and had to conduce the lead to his Kawasaki teammate. At turn nine, Mahias surprised Oettl with a sharp pass. The Kawasakis jostled for position down the straight, creating a bubble of clean air for Raffaele De Rosa to charge past both of them, forcing Oettl to hand over the lead. Oettl took it back a few turns later. 

Seven laps down, the top seven were covered bu a second as Steven Odendaal joined the fray, making his way past Jules Cluzel and Isaac Viñales as De Rosa took back the lead. Lucas Mahias took the lead at turn nine but De Rosa took it back down the straight. 

A lap later, halfway through the race, Mahias took the lead back down the straight. In the fight for fourth place, Steven Odendaal and Andrea Locatelli swapped places back and forth ahead of Jules Cluzel. 

Thirteen laps into the eighteen lap race, the leading nine riders were all within striking distance of each other as the pack met back markers and Raffaele De Rosa took over at the lead. At the start of lap fifteen, a gap finally appeared in the lead group, as Hannes Soomer and Jules Cluzel dropped off the back of the front six riders. Mahias took the lead into turn one again, the lead swapping almost every lap, and De Rosa took it back a lap later, followed by Philipp Oettl taking second place off Lucas Mahias. Andrea Locatelli finally made it into the top three, jumping Mahias into turn three, but Mahias took advantage of Locatelli's wide line into turn six to take third place back from him.

With two laps to go, Philipp Oettl took the lead from Raffaele De Rosa and Mahias followed him through as De Rosa was wide into turn one. Places didn't change on the remainder of the lap and the last lap started with Mahias sliding the rear into turn one. De Rosa and Locatelli passed Oettl to start the lap and Locatelli tried a few passes but couldn't get past. De Rosa led out of the last corner, but Locatelli out-dragged him to the line and took second place by under a hundredth of a second.

Lucas Mahias won his second race of the year, the only rider aside from Andy Verdoïa to beat Andrea Locatelli this year, and ended his World Supersport career with a win as he heads off to World Superbike for 2021 to race second-placed, and current World Supersport champion, Andrea Locatelli. Raffaele De Rosa was third in the closest race of the year, but he is still hunting that elusive first victory.

Philipp Oettl finished in fifth place, behind Steven Odendaal, and beat Jules Cluzel to third place in the championship by just two points, the Marseilesse played out for the third time this year.

2020 Aragon Moto2 Race Result: A Spoonful Of Drama

A sunny Motorland Aragon set the scene for the intermediate class battle, which went on until the final few turns of a tense and occasionally dramatic race. For the second week in a row, Sam Lowes was rewarded for his persistence with victory, following a dismal afternoon for the SKY Racing team. Having started 12th, Enea Bastianini turned his weekend around and then turned the championship battle around, regaining the lead with a fine second place in Aragon. Jorge Martin was a redoubtable adversary for the Italian but had to settle for the final podium position.

At the start of the 21 laps, it was Marco Bezzecchi who got the holeshot from poleman Lowes, while Jake Dixon got past front row starter Fabio Di Giannantonio but the Italian quickly recovered and was soon attacking Lowes for second. Keen not to allow Bezzecchi to run away, as the Italian had stretched an eight tents advantage on lap one, Lowes picked up the chase on lap two from Di Giannantonio, with Martin, Dixon, Luca Marini, Bastianini, Remy Gardner and Marcos Ramirez close behind. A one second gap separated the lead group from a second one including Augusto Fernandez, Joe Roberts, Tom Luthi and Xavi Vierge.

While Lowes was pushing to reduce the gap to the runaway leader, the drama started behind them, Marini abandoning the lead group as he crashed out at turn 14 and had to watch from the sidelines how his championship lead seemed to be going the way of his teammate. The incident left a slight gap between the leaders and Bastianini, who was pushing to rejoin the podium battle, having disposed of Gardner & Co.

Lowes had caught up with Bezzecchi by lap six and brought Di Giannantonio with him, leaving Martin, Dixon and Bastianini almost a second behind. As close as he got, Lowes did not have it easy finding a way past the rapid Italian and the British rider’s small mistake on lap eight got punished by Di Giannantonio, who swiftly picked up the chase. The leading trio kept in close proximity but Martin was drawing ever closer to the group, while gently dropping Bastianini and Dixon.

Bezzecchi continued to run an impeccable race at the front as the race reached lap 10 but Di Giannantonio saw an opportunity at turn 14, which the Speed Up rider fully embraced but the lead did not seem to suit him well as he became the next victim of turn 2. Bezzecchi inherited the lead once more, but under pressure from Lowes once again, and with Martin and Bastianini eyeing the victory battle as well, seven tenths behind the leading duo but yo-yoing in and out of contention for the next few laps. Bastianini was a man on a mission, taking third away from Martin at turn 13 with 7 laps to go but the Spaniard hit back at turn 1 and the Italian had to do it all over again on the next lap.

While that battle was unfolding, Bezzecchi and Lowes had gained an advantage of nearly three seconds at the front but Lowes seemed to struggle to keep up with Bezzecchi too, consistently six tenths behind. Bastianini had to give up any aspirations at the victory battle given the gap with five laps remaining, but Martin did not make it easy to keep the podium spot either, glued to his tail for those final laps.

It all seemed pretty settled as the race entered the final 2 laps but the turn 2 curse struck once again, catching out Bezzecchi and gifting Lowes the lead. Meanwhile, Martin attacked Bastianini in what became the battle for second, the Spaniard starting the final lap ahead but the Italian set up a fine move at turn 13 to grab second, as well as the championship lead. Martin settled for third, with Dixon in a solid but lonely ride to fourth. Gardner joined the top five ahead of Ramirez and Hector Garzo, while Roberts, Tetsuta Nagashima and Simone Corsi rounded out the top ten positions.

Bastianini’s late move secured him the lead in the world championship, 2 points ahead of Lowes and 5 ahead of Marini, with Bezzecchi 25 points back.

2020 Aragon Moto3 Race Result: Another Day Another Comeback

Lightweight class riders lined up on the grid as the clock hit noon in Aragon and went on to provide an entertaining show for the attending wildlife. Once the checkered flag waved, Jaume Masia became the 100th rider to win a GP for Honda in his first victory of the season. The Spaniard expertly managed the final lap of a close race to finish ahead of Darryn Binder and poleman Raul Fernandez. The Red Bull KTM man had led the way for most of the race but was happy to at least get a maiden podium out it.

Championship leader Albert Arenas had made the best start off the line, ahead of fellow front row starters Fernandez and Celestino Vietti, but Fernandez was quick to recover the lead by the end of lap 1, bringing Tatsuki Suzuki with him. Binder was quick to join the top six, while John McPhee and Ai Ogura were still towards the bottom of the top ten. McPhee then served his long lap penalty for irresponsible riding in Q1 on lap 3, dropping him to 17th position but only four seconds off the lead.

Fernandez, Suzuki and Arenas were biding their time at the front but Vietti was steadily dropping out of the top ten in the early stages. However, the leaders didn’t have much time to relax as Binder was on a charge was attacked for third on lap five and went on to snatch second on lap six. Fernandez had been defending admirably and bringing the lead pack including Binder, Arenas, Suzuki and Romano Fenati over two seconds ahead of the chasers lead by Masia, who had made solid progress after starting 17th on the grid.

Binder lined up a move on Fernandez on the back straight and the Spaniard eventually had to give up the lead at turn 16. Fernandez struck back at turn 12 the next time around but the shenanigans allowed Masia to reduce the gap to under a second by lap nine and the chasing group merged with the leaders just one lap later. That group also included a fast recovering McPhee, who was back in the victory battle at the halfway point of the race. However, Vietti and Ogura were not making much noise, outside of the top ten and slowly losing touch with the lead group.

Fernandez started the final half of the race still in charge of proceedings ahead of Arenas and Binder, with Fenati battling off McPhee while closely followed by Masia, Jeremy Alcoba and Suzuki. Carlos Tatay was leading the chasing group one second down the road. The world championship leader kept the cameras busy for the next few laps as he was coming under attack from all sides but no one was really showing a wheel to Fernandez until the final corner with six laps to go, when Binder regained top spot. The poleman got pushed back to fifth but was quick to fight back and was retaking the lead at turn 1 next time around.

Masia finally took his turn at the front in the final three laps but Fernandez proved to be the last on the brakes into turn one once again. Masia repeated the same move at the final turn as the race entered the final lap but again Fernandez immediately resumed the lead at turn one. Masia did the same routine at turn 16 on the last lap and this time it paid off as the Spaniard kept the lead to the checkered flag. The decisive move also saw Binder breeze past Fernandez at turn 16 to claim second position and demote the Spaniard to third. Fenati missed out on the podium for a tenth of a second, ahead of McPhee and Alcoba. Arenas went wide on last lap and dropped to seventh after some more paint rubbing late in that lap. A second and a half town the road, Suzuki, Vietti and Foggia rounded out the top ten.

The best Ogura could do was 14th, although Arenas losing positions late on means that the Spaniard only extended his lead to 13 points over the Japanese rider. Vietti is 18 points back, with Arbolino dropping to 29 points while out of action. McPhee is fifth in the championship, 35 points down.

2020 Estoril World Superbike Superpole Race Result: Short Track, Fast Sprint

The ten lap sprint race that would determine the grid for race two this afternoon was cold enough for everyone to opt not to use the SCX superpole race tyre. 

Toprak Razgatlioglu hit turn one from pole position again, ahead of Garrett Gerloff, Leon Haslam and Michael van der Mark as Jonathan Rea and Scott Redding carved their way through their respective packs. At the end of lap one, Alex Lowes tucked the front at turn thirteen and ended his race, walking away from his crash.

At the start of the second lap, Leon Haslam fell back to fifth place as the continued duel between Chaz Davies and Michael van der Mark passed him at the start of the lap. Jonathan Rea climbed up to seventh place as Scott Redding made his way to eleventh. Toprak Razgatlioglu set the fastest lap as he increased his lead over Garrett Gerloff. 

Over the next few laps, Toprak Razgatlioglu stretched out his lead to a second and a half over Garret Gerloff who had a similar lead over the Chaz Davies versus Michael van der Mark battle over the last podium place. Jonathan Rea, after overtaking Leon Haslam into turn one of lap four, was a second behind them. Scott Redding, three places back after passing Michael Ruben Rinaldi sat behind the Hondas of Alvaro Bautista and Leon Haslam and lined them up for a passes, taking seventh place off Haslam on lap six of ten. Toprak Razgatlioglu set a new lap record of 1'36.594 at the halfway mark.

As Chaz Davies and Michael van der Mark continued to fight, Scott Redding eventually passed Alvaro Bautista for sixth place, just over a second behind Jonathan Rea. Chaz Davies went a little wide at turn three, his grip starting to fade, and van der Mark tried to stuff it up the inside, but had to back off after Davies closed his line and the pair touched. They continued close riding, van der Mark needing to pass before his grip dropped to the same level as Davies, and at the end of lap eight, he took his opportuinty at turn thirteen and led briefly down the straight where the power of the Ducati, coupled with his braking prowess, put Davies in front into turn one. At turn four, however, Davies once again went a little wide and van der Mark still had the tyre to get underneath and pass Davies. Davies had no answer and van der Mark bolted off. 

Toprak Razgatlioglu won decisively again, with a pole position, lap record and two wins so far this weekend, ahead of Garrett Gerloff and Michael van der Mark, Yamaha's first all-blue podium in the history of World Superbike, and a lockout of the front row for race two. Chaz Davies was a second off the podium in fourth place. Scott Redding couldn't close the gap on Jonathan Rea, but the pair finished together on the time sheet and will round out the second row for this afternoon's race, alongside Chaz Davies. Michael Ruben Rinaldi's ninth place, behind the Hondas, assured him of the independent rider's championship, thirty four points clear of Loris Baz.
