Dani Pedrosa has got off to a flying start at Laguna Seca, leading from early in the session and ending FP1 just ahead of Jorge Lorenzo. The Repsol Honda man was quick from the off, closing in on the race lap record as the session drew to a close. Jorge Lorenzo took the lead for part of the session, but at the end, the Factory Yamaha rider had to concede to Pedrosa, the Repsol Honda man gaining most of his advantage in the final section of the track, from the bottom of the Corkscrew back across the line.
Pedrosa's Repsol teammate Casey Stoner ended the session in 3rd, unhappy with the fact that he was four tenths behind his teammate, while Ben Spies finished in 4th, half a second behind Pedrosa and with the potential to have been a little faster, if he hadn't run across Toni Elias on his final lap.
The two Monster Tech 3 Yamahas followed in 5th and 6th, Andrea Dovizioso just edging his teammate Cal Crutchlow, but the gap to Pedrosa was already large, nearly 1.2 for Dovizioso and a second and a quarter for Crutchlow. Valentino Rossi ended FP1 in 7th, 1.7 behind Pedrosa and half a second behind Crutchlow, while Stefan Bradl on the LCR Honda got between the two Factory Ducatis, relegating Nicky Hayden to 9th. Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top 10, but was over two seconds slower than Pedrosa, while Colin Edwards was the first of the CRT machines in 11th, nearly 3.5 seconds behind the leader.
