2007 MotoGP Laguna Seca FP2 Times - Day 1

If the conditions this morning were perfect at Laguna Seca, the conditions this afternoon were even more so, as impossible as that sounds. And Casey Stoner was like the weather: Perfect in the morning, even more perfect in the afternoon. In fact, Stoner is as scary fast here as he was at the Sachsenring. Not that Stoner's fast times in practice did him much good during the race in Germany, but one glance at Stoner's lap times shows a terrifying consistency, lap after lap of low 1'23s. That looks like being race pace, and good enough to win come Sunday.

The other man to be so quick is Marco Melandri. Melandri has traveled a long road at Laguna, going from hating the place, and crashing badly 3 times at his first visit in 2005, to loving the place last year, to being very quick here this year. Behind Melandri is John Hopkins, who also had a good session. His first run during the afternoon featured a long, consistent run of 1'23 laps, a solid foundation to build on tomorrow.

In 4th spot is Colin Edwards, who also has a solid pace. Edwards was constantly at the front in both of today's sessions, and looks promising for the race. Behind Edwards was Dani Pedrosa. In contrast to the top 4 and Rossi, Pedrosa's time was set late in the session, on a single fast lap. Both Repsol Hondas have struggled, despite finishing 5th and 8th, spending most of the session a way down the timesheets, pulling out fast laps at the end to move them up the standings.

Valentino Rossi is in 6th spot, but was again consistently fast throughout the session. Chris Vermeulen took 7th, running well at one of his favorite tracks, only knocked out of the top 6 by Pedrosa's fast lap. For most of the session, only the first 6 were within 1 second of the Stoner, but towards the end, a few more people managed to close up the gap, with Nicky Hayden, Loris Capirossi and Makoto Tamada closing to within 1 second, and Carlos Checa just 1/1000th of a second outside of a second.

The Dunlop riders ran surprisingly well, and though Tamada's time was set on qualifiers, Sylvain Guintoli's time was set after a long run. And with the places 10 to 16 all within half a second of each other, 14th spot is pretty good.

As for the American wild cards, Roger Lee Hayden did remarkably well, taking 15th spot ahead of regulars Alex Barros (who is still suffering with a hand injury), Kurtis Roberts and Shinya Nakano. Hayden even nipped ahead of his world champion brother at one point during the session, though Nicky quickly put an end to that. Miguel Duhamel is having a tougher time, for the first time he has ridden the bike, but he is almost in touch with the MotoGP regulars, and is also not known for setting great times during practice.

Kurtis Roberts has a new chassis at Laguna, and so far, he seems to be making progress. He has moved up from languishing at the bottom of the field, and though he is still a little way out of contention, he is much closer than he has been for a while. Promising stuff indeed for Team KR.

The man with the toughest job this weekend is Chaz Davies. The former 250 rider from Britain originally arrived at Laguna thinking he would be riding his Supersport and Formula Xtreme machines in the AMA races, but after Alex Hofmann was ruled out with a hand injury suffered during the first free practice session, Davies stepped in to take the 2nd Pramac d'Antin Ducati. He has done exactly what was required from him in his first session, setting ever faster laps through the practice, to end up within a second of Duhamel and 1.5 seconds of Nakano. By the time the race comes around, he should be ready to run with the regulars, not bad for someone who has never ridden a MotoGP bike before.

Practice continues tomorrow, with Qualifying in the afternoon.

2007 MotoGP Laguna Seca FP1 Times - Day 1

Conditions were more or less ideal for the first practice session at Laguna Seca. The usual suspects were in excellent form, although Casey Stoner took a while to get up to speed, but after 20 minutes or so, Stoner was bang at the top of the timesheets, a position he did not relinquish. Otherwise the Americans, or rather, the American regulars, were good, as expected, with John Hopkins and Colin Edwards being very fast right from the off.

The top 6 were all pretty close, with a gap after Chris Vermeulen down to 7th. Vermeulen took his time to get into his stride though, gradually climbing up into the top echelons. After their triumph of last week, the Repsol Hondas, reportedly fresh off re-signing their sponsor, are a way down the field. In theory, they should both be fast here, but theory is a very cruel mistress indeed.

The big excitement came early in the session, when Sylvain Guintoli messed up the Corkscrew, and fired through the gravel taking out Alex Hofmann. Hofmann was injured and taken to the medical center. No word yet on his condition.

Practice continues this afternoon.

2007 Sachsenring FP3 Times - Day 2

The weather has warmed up considerably at the Sachsenring, but no change at the top of the timesheet. Casey Stoner continued his terrifiying domination at the German track, over 3/10ths faster than his team mate, and big surprise, Loris Capirossi. Capirossi has been almost invisible for most of the sessions, and indeed, for most of the season, and with negotiations with Ducati stalled, needs a strong result to get his career back into gear. This looks like the first, tentative step on the way.

But Capirossi's small steps are as nothing compared to Casey Stoner's giant leaps. The Australian had one awe-inspiring run of 10 laps, 7 of which were in the 1'22 bracket. Of the 21 full laps he rode, 9 were 1'22s.

Where Casey's race pace seems to be in the high 1'22s, for the mere mortals of the field, such as Valentino Rossi, race pace will be somewhere in the low 1'23 bracket. The Sachsenring is known for close racing, but Stoner doesn't seem to appreciate that reputation.

Rossi was unable to improve his best time from yesterday, only managing the 7th fastest time ahead of team mate Colin Edwards. Between the Fiat Yamaha team and the Marlboro Ducati team were Marco Melandri, Randy de Puniet, Carlos Checa and John Hopkins, all riders who have looked strong all weekend.

The Repsol Honda team seemed to have lost their way a little again, with Nicky Hayden down in 10th (but well up from his dismal 17th spot from yesterday), and Dani Pedrosa down in 14th, behind French Tech 3 Yamaha rider Sylvain Guintoli. Guintoli has been surprising all weekend, and continues to shine.

Qualifying practice will be held this afternoon, with temperatures looking to be around 30 degrees C, the warmest they've been in Northern Europe, and a MotoGP round, for quite a while.

2007 Sachsenring FP2 Times - Day 1

Another session dominated by Casey Stoner this afternoon. Stoner was consistently the fastest rider, and took another big chunk out of the lap record today. Valentino Rossi was once again the only man who could get anywhere near Stoner, finally closing to within 35/100ths of the Australian.

The big surprise of the session is Sylvain Guintoli up in 4th spot. Guintoli set his fastest time on a set of qualifiers, but was quick on the previous laps on harder compound tires. Whether he can carry this form into qualifying remains to be seen, but the Dunlops have looked better than ever so far at the Sachsenring.

This afternoon's session was riddled with incidents, with rider after riding running off the track, though few actually crashed and hurt themselves. But the session was rounded off with a piece of grand theater, with Nicky Hayden's Honda RC212V self-destructing in the most spectacular manner, spewing out smoke and engine parts onto the track down the front straight. The disintegration of his engine marked the end of a difficult session for the reigning world champion, as he failed to improve his time from the morning practice.

Practice continues tomorrow morning, before the qualifying session tomorrow afternoon to determine the grid.

2007 Sachsenring FP1 Times - Day 1

The Sachsenring circuit shouldn't suit the Ducati. Unfortunately, no one remembered to tell Casey Stoner, as already in the first session, he has shattered the lap record by over 2/10ths of a second. Stoner was consistently faster than everyone else in the session. Interesting to see Carlos Checa in 2nd spot, he was another surprise, being so fast on a bog stock Honda satellite bike. And an even bigger surprise is to see Sylvain Guintoli, on Dunlop tires, in 9th spot, ahead of Dani Pedrosa down in 11th.

Nicky Hayden isn't as far forward as last time out at Assen, and Valentino Rossi is loitering down in 8th spot, while team mate Colin Edwards is up in 4th.

The weekend is already looking interesting, after just one session.

2007 Dutch TT Assen FP3 Times - Day 2

Although Valentino Rossi topped the timesheets in this morning's final practice, just stealing the fastest time with his final lap of the session, it was Casey Stoner who once again dominated the free practice. Stoner consistently ran lap after lap of 1'37 and low 1'38 times, faster than anyone else. Rossi was quick, but not as consistent as the young Australian championship leader.

Behind the front two, Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards were also consistently fast. Though John Hopkins ended up with the 5th quickest time, he was much further down the field for most of the session. Makoto Tamada took 6th, once again using a qualifier to get himself up into the fast times.

This morning's session was dry, though cool, but a band of rain is making it's way across the Netherlands, expect to reach Assen within the next hour or so. It's arrival looks to coincide exactly with the MotoGP qualifying practice, so qualifying could be very interesting. The first few minutes could be very spectacular, if the track is still dry, with people risking a qualifier early. Tomorrow's weather is predicted to be dry in the morning, with a chance of rain in the afternoon, but it looks like the race will be run in dry conditions, leaving this morning's session as probably the best indication of what's going to happen tomorrow.
