We don't usually cover Superstock racing here, but due to the interest in Ducati's 1199 Panigale, we thought we'd better make an exception.
With Eddi La Marra's pole position, we assumed that the race would be about the Panigale v the BMWs, but what we got was a reminder that motorcycle racing is more about the rider than the bike. While La Marra led for the first half, this was due to an error by Lorenzo Baroni who lost the lead in a chicane and picked up a ride-through for his troubles. La Marra looked like he would be gifted a maiden win on the 1199 Panigale until Heber Pedrosa (no relation) climbed off his bike and let it slam into a safety barrier, mechanically separating the front forks from the rest of the bike, strewing the parts across the track. After a red flag and a restart, it became obvious that Loris Baz hadn't been given a copy of Ducati's perfect maiden race script and he made the most of the fact that there were no aggregate times in the new style two-part races. Sylvain Barrier also saw an opportunity and fought past Baz and Le Marra for the first race win of the year.
So, while the Panigale didn't disappoint, it finished in 3rd behind a BMW and a Kawasaki. This is a testament more to the hard riding we expect from production racing than to any specific bike being a guaranteed better package than another, thankfully. We can't complain at that.
