World Supersport gets a Pirelli SCX tyre, and everyone chooses to use it for their first race of the weekend.
Dominique Aegerter converted his pole position to a lead, with Jules Cluzel in second place and Steven Odendaal changing through to third, then second after passing Cluzel. Manuel Gonzalez and Cluzel swapped places ahead of Can Oncu and Luca Bernardi.
Aegerter, Odendaal and Cluzel held the front places, with the leading sixteen racers in one large group. Luca Bernardi set the fastest lap in fifth place. The Fuligni brothers disputed thirteenth place until Federico crashed out leaving Filippo to fight for family honour. Steven Odendaal set the fastest lap on lap three.
On lap four, with the front group still closed up, Manuel Gonzalez passed Jules Cluzel. A lap later, Hannes Soomer crashed out at turn five, rejoining in twenty seventh place. At the start of lap seven, the leading six stretched out a gap from seventh placed Philipp Oettl, as Aegerter, Odendaal, Gonzalez, Cluzel, Bernardi and Oncu made up the leading peloton, Gonzalez having set the fastest lap on lap five.
Lap seven, Luca Bernardi started to fall back towards Can Oncu with Federico Caricasulo and Philipp Oettl over a second behind Oncu. The leading four looked like they were breaking away, but Bernardi closed the gap and caught the leading troupe as Oncu lost touch in a lonely sixth place.
Dominique Aegerter in the lead had four riders behind him, all five under a second. Jules Cluzel, in that group, punted Manuel Gonzalez out of third place and was followed by Luca Bernardi who took third place from him into turn nine. Caricasulo joined the crashers at turn three, the eighth crasher of the day.
Jules Cluzel's antics, determined to get a podium place, let the leading two stretch out a lead of over a second, and both Aegerter and Odendaal in the leading two positions, both set fastest laps on lap ten and the race was split into the leading two a second clear of Bernardi, Cluzel and Gonzalez who were themselves over a second clear of a lonely Can Oncu. On lap ten, Dominique Aegerter set the fastest lap again and started to build a gap from Steven Odendaal.
Manuel Gonzalez looked visibly quicker than fourth-placed Jules Cluzel, but couldn't get past him, trying overtakes on the brakes and round the outside, but couldn't get past the French Supersport veteran.
As Dominique Aegerter broke free at the front, Luca Bernardi caught Steven Odendaal and started to try to take second place from him, nipping at his rear wheel, constantly under two tenths behind him. Local hero Bernardi found a way past into turn fourteen by turning tighter than Odendaal and taking second place from him as Aegerter set the fastest lap again, two seconds clear at the front. Gonzalez still couldn't find a way past Cluzel, but he hadn't stopped trying.
With three laps left, Dominique Aegerter had over two seconds of freedom behind him, with Luca Bernardi defending against Steven Odendaal while Jules Cluzel and Manuel Gonzalez kept their battle hot over two and a half seconds behind, still under two tenths of a second separating them.
Philipp Oettl held sixth place, five seconds behind Gonzalez, but Randy Krummenacher was doing his getting good late trick to close up on sixth place ahead of Can Oncu and Niki Tuuli, and a fight for sixth broke out as Gonzalez made his third turn eight stick by turn ten but a couple of turn later, Cluzel fought back and gave us a fourth place photo finish.
Maria Herrera became DNF number ten as Marc Alcoba came under investigation for pushing her off at the last turn attempting a pass that didn't exist and taking away her best ever result. Race Direction wasted no time in kicking Alcoba out of the points.
Dominique Aegerter took the win and, courtesy of second placed Luca Bernardi, took the championship lead from third-placed Steven Odendaal. The photo finish came out in Jules Cluzel's favour, the more experienced rider beating Manuel Gonzalez to fourth place by three hundredths of a second.
Dominique Aegerter leads the championship by three points over Sten Odendaal and thirty two points over joint third-placed Luca Bernardi and Philipp Oettl.
