2011 Portimao World Supersport Race Result: Victory Taken In Dominating Style

Results and summary of the World Supersport race:

Chaz Davies has ended his championship winning World Supersport season with a dominant victory at Portimao. The ParkinGO Yamaha rider escaped as soon as the lights went out, quickly building a gap he would defend for the rest of the race. Though the chasing group would close on the Welshman in the latter stages of the race, he would not be caught, going on to take his 6th victory of the season.

Behind Davies a battle for 2nd in the championship unfolded via a battle for 2nd in the race. Gino Rea was the first contender for 2nd, getting a rocket start to shoot through the field into 2nd in the first corner, but a near-highside on the exit of Turn 2 saw the Londoner nearly lose control of his Step Honda, the bike shaking violently and slamming into Broc Parkes, putting both men out of the race, and Parkes out of the race for 2nd in the championship.

Parkalgar's Sam Lowes was the next man to get into 2nd, the young Englishman pushing hard to catch Davies in the early stages of the race at the circuit which sponsors his team. Through the first half of the race, Lowes inched back closer to Davies, but a crash saw Lowes leave the race early. Lowes' departure left the field clear for James Ellison and David Salom, the pair dicing all race long over the 2nd place on the podium, but each with different interests. Ellison was looking for a good result to wrap up his season, while Salom was trying to secure sufficient points to hold off Fabien Foret for 2nd in the championship.

The matter was settled during a last-lap dice, Ellison slicing underneath Salom only to be passed again on the exit of the corner. A last-ditch lunge saw Ellison run wide, and Salom end the race in 2nd. With Foret crossing the line a lowly 12th, Salom easily clinched the 2nd spot in the championship, ahead of the Frenchman.
