Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Friday Final Times: Petrucci Fastest On Day Lost To Conditions

There was almost nothing happening on the track at Qatar on Friday, the wind and sand making it impossible to ride. The conditions got so bad that at one point Race Direction red flagged the session, determining it was too difficult to continue.

The paddock reconvenes in two weeks time for the first race of the season.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Friday 6pm Times: Conditions Put Early End To The Test

Track action at Qatar has been not so much limited as verging on nonexistent on Friday. Strong winds combined with a sandstorm made for a very dirty track and difficult and dangerous riding conditions, meaning almost everyone has stayed in the safety of their pit boxes. Five riders - Pol Espargaro, Danilo Petrucci, Brad Binder, Michele Pirro and Takuya Tsuda have posted a grand combined total of 15 laps including in and out laps, with Espargaro and Petrucci doing a combined 3 total laps between them. The fastest time is 8 seconds off the lap record. A wasted day.

The teams also have very little left to test, having gotten through the bulk of their program in the preceding four days of testing. Most are now packing up and getting ready to leave, to head home briefly before returning for the first round of 2021 in two weeks time.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Thursday Final Times: Yamahas Lead The Way On Penultimate Day

Yamaha have taken a clean sweep of the top three times on the second day of the MotoGP test at Qatar. Maverick Viñales topped the timesheets with a lap of 1'53.244, still six hundredths of a second off the best time from yesterday set by Jack Miller. Franco Morbidelli took second spot on the 2019-spec Petronas Yamaha, while Fabio Quartararo was third quickest.

Pecco Bagnaia was the first non-Yamaha, the Ducati rider two tenths slower than Viñales, and another two tenths quicker than Aleix Espargaro. The two Suzukis took sixth and seventh spot, six tenths behind Viñales, while Valentino Rossi crossed the line in eighth, three quarters of a second behind his former teammate. Johann Zarco was the second Ducati home in ninth, while Pol Espargaro was the quickest Honda, and the last rider within a second of Viñales.

Testing concludes tomorrow.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Thursday 8pm Times: Bagnaia Takes Over

With one hour left to go in the test, Pecco Bagnaia leads the second day of the test, the Ducati Lenovo rider getting under Aleix Esparagaro's time from earlier in the day. Joan Mir is currently third in the standings, while Valentino Rossi is up to fourth on the Petronas Yamaha.

Bad news for Alex Marquez: the LCR Honda rider has crashed a lot over the two tests, and the off he had earlier in the day saw him suffer a small crack to the fourth metatarsal bone in his foot. What that means for the rest of the test remains to be seen.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Thursday 7pm Times: Aleix Espargaro Leads, Rookies Impress

Aleix Espargaro has taken over at the top of the timesheets at the 7pm mark on the second day of the Qatar test, the Aprilia rider the first to drop into the 1'53s on Thursday. Ducati Lenovo rider Pecco Bagnaia currently sits in second, while Pol Espargaro is currently third fastest on the Repsol Honda. Suzuki's Alex Rins is fourth fastest, leading the two factory Yamahas of Maverick Viñales and Fabio Quartararo.

The MotoGP rookies are starting to make their mark, Jorge Martin just nipping ahead of Enea Bastianini, both riders having set their best times of the test in the mid 1'54s.

The session was red-flagged briefly after Alex Marquez crashed (though he was unhurt) and the track needed cleaning. Action has resumed already.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Thursday 5pm Times: Morbidelli Leads As Testing Picks Up Again

The first two hours of the Qatar test were the usual desolate affair, as rider sat and waited until the track temperature dropped enough for it to make sense to go out. The only exception was Maverick Viñales, who once again spent the lost part of the day doing test starts, and working on clutch settings for the start, his weakest point.

The track got busier in the third hour, with Franco Morbidelli leading the way by 5pm, ahead of Aleix Espargaro and Fabio Quartararo, while Pol Espargaro sits in fourth, ahead of the factory Ducatis of Pecco Bagnaia and Jack Miller.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Wednesday Final Times: Miller Smashes Lap Record

Lap records are tumbling at the end of the first day of the second Qatar test. After Fabio Quartararo smashed Marc Marquez' outright lap record of 1'53.380 by over a tenth of a second, Jack Miller took another eight hundredths off that, going just shy of two tenths faster than Marquez did during the race weekend in 2019. It is a testament to the much improved conditions.

Miller and the factory Ducati lead, ahead of the Monster Energy Yamaha pairing of Fabio Quartararo and Maverick Viñales, though Viñales is a third of a second slower than Jack Miller. Johann Zarco put the Pramac Ducati into fourth place, with the exact same time as Pol Espargaro on the Repsol Honda.

Aleix Espargaro ended the in sixth on the Aprilia, just ahead of the Suzuki pairing of Joan Mir and Alex Rins. Rins was the last rider to get within a second of Jack Miller. Pecco Bagnaia was ninth quickest on the first day, just over a second slower than his factory Ducati teammate, and just ahead of Franco Morbidelli on the Petronas Yamaha.

Testing resumes on Thursday, and finishes on Friday.

Qatar 2 MotoGP Test Wednesday 8pm Times: Miller Leads As Top Tightens Up

At the end of the penultimate hour of the test, Jack Miller still leads the way, though he is joined in the 1'53s by Pol Espargaro, Johann Zarco and Aleix Expargaro. The top of the timesheet has tightened up a fair bit, as riders start to try out their single lap pace. There are now nine riders in half a second, and twelve riders within nine tenths of a second.

There is one more hour of the test before they wind up for the day.
