Results and summary of the 125cc race at Misano:
Nico Terol has struck an important mental blow in the 125cc championship race by winning the race at Misano, snatching victory from Johann Zarco after the Frenchman made a stupid mistake when leading out of the final corner and on the run to the line.
Zarco had pole - his second of the season, both secured in Italy - but had no benefit from it, getting caught up in traffic from the line. It was Terol who rocketed into the lead at the start, already having a comfortable lead after the first chicane. The lead had grown to nearly a second by the end of the first few laps, but it would not stand for long.
Zarco and Efren Vazquez had Danny Kent and Sandro Cortese ahead of them, but quickly worked their way past the Briton and the German, Vazquez profiting from Zarco's forceful attitude. Once past, they latched onto the back of Terol, but the pace that Terol was posting proved too much for Vazquez, the Avant-AirAsia-Ajo rider dropping off the back of his teammate Zarco and Bankia Aspar's Terol.
From that point, a classic duel unfolded, with Zarco playing a waiting game while Terol led. With six laps to go, Zarco stepped up the pressure, poking his nose ahead of Terol around turns 12 and 13, and then again at the penultimate left hander at Turn 15. Zarco took the lead on lap 18, but immediately lost it to the Spaniard, before making a more convincing move at Rio to take the lead. Terol could now only follow.
Zarco appeared to have the race in hand, but the first signs of what would decide the race came on lap 20, when Zarco had a very long look back at Terol, losing ground in the process. The Frenchman did the same over the line on the penultimate lap, allowing Terol to come past him easily. Zarco took back the lead at Rio once again, and looked to be in charge, holding off challenges down the back straight with ease. Terol tried one last desperate lunge at Carro, diving inside Zarco, but Zarco held his line and forced Terol back to retake the lead. Zarco had a clear advantage both going into and coming out of the final corner, then inexplicably turned round to see where Terol was and try to block him if he tried to pass. In doing so, he lost much of his momentum and a huge amount of speed, allowing Terol to blast past him over the line and take victory. It was a stupid rookie mistake, denying Zarco of victory for the third time this year.
The victory means that Terol extends his championship lead to 31 points with just 5 races left in the season. Zarco's ill-advised look to the rear means that he is now 10 points further behind than he could have been, and will require some help if he is to win the championship this year. Terol now just needs to ensure he finishes directly behind Zarco for the rest of the season, and the title is his.
