2011 Silverstone World Supersport Race Result: Four-Way Battle Settled In Final Laps

Results and summary of the World Supersport race at Silverstone:

Chaz Davies has held off hard challenges from David Salom and Fabien Foret to take victory in the World Supersport race at Silverstone. With the victory, Davies extends his lead to 42 points in the championship.

Gino Rea got the drop when the lights went out, powering into the first corner ahead of Florian Marino from the inside spot on the first row. Chaz Davies got a similarly strong start, coming through from 8th on the grid up to 3rd, with Sam Lowes sliding in to 4th. Rea's lead did not last long, Florian Marino taking over from the Step Racing rider on the way onto the old start and finish line, and Davies passing a lap later on the way into Copse. Rea's challenge suffered further setback on the next lap, when Sam Lowes, who had been running a strong race until then, just touched Rea's back wheel on the way into Maggots, causing Lowes to fall and Rea to run on across the tarmac, dropping several seconds behind the leaders.

Marino led only briefly before Davies took over, though the Yamaha man had to go back and forth with the young Ten Kate Honda rider several times before settling the affair in his favor, and still Marino pressed him. Eventually, Marino was passed by his teammate Fabien Foret and polesitter David Salom, who spent the first 5 laps of the race recovering from his poor start.

Once past Marino, Foret harried Davies, eventually getting by with a brutal pass at Stowe forcing Davies to sit up and let him past. The Welshman then got caught up with Salom as Foret pushed on, but a bizarre incident which saw Foret sit up and look back saw both Davies and Salom easily pass him to take back the lead. Salom snapped at Davies' wheel for much of the rest of the race, even getting past on a couple of occasions, with with 4 laps to go, Davies decided he had had enough. The ParkinGO Yamaha rider pushed to break Salom's opposition, and went on to take a surprisingly comfortable victory by over a second.

Salom was forced to settle for 2nd, the Motocard.com Kawasaki rider's best result in the World Supersport class. Behind Salom, Fabien Foret finished in 3rd, but only after an epic battle to hold off a resurgent Gino Rea, the Step Racing rider having fought his way back from a long way down the field after his incident with Lowes in the early laps. Just how hard Rea was pushing was apparent from the number of times that he only barely saved the bike from sliding out from under him, but a crash in the final tight left hander going into Club saw the young Londoner's challenge fail, and handed Foret 3rd.

Davies victory extends his lead in the championship up to 42 points, a comfortable margin with 4 races to go in the title race. Salom's 2nd place at Silverstone moves him into 2nd in the championship, just 3 points ahead of 3rd place man Fabien Foret. A couple of dire races in a row have seen former championship leader Broc Parkes tumble down the standings to 4th, 51 points behind Davies. Davies is looking more and more likely to wrap the championship up at Imola, with two rounds to go.
