Results and summary of the World Supersport class at Brno:
Gino Rea has taken his first ever win in the World Supersport class with a convincing performance from the start. A podium for Chaz Davies and another race crash for Broc Parkes sees Davies get a much firmer grip on the WSS championship.
It was Rea who got the holeshot, getting a powerful drive from the line, and entering the first corner ahead of polesitter Fabien Foret. Rea's lead would last for two corners, as Foret took back the lead from the Step Racing rider in the first of Brno's characteristic left-right combinations. The two Provec Motocard.com Kawasakis of Broc Parkes and David Salom followed, while Sam Lowes sneaked back ahead of Chaz Davies to take 5th.
Foret and Rea pulled a gap, putting some time into the Kawasakis, Foret being harried by the young Londoner. Rea's chance came on lap 5, barging past the Ten Kate rider as the pair of Hondas made their way back up the hill. Foret's attempts to defend failed, handing Rea the lead.
Behind Rea and Foret, Kawasaki's David Salom and Parkalgar's Sam Lowes were starting to catch the leaders. Parkes had already crashed out on lap 3, losing the front as he dueled with his teammate Salom. Lowes looked like being the first to catch to catch Rea and Foret, but his challenge petered out at one-thirds difference. A group formed for third, consisting of Lowes, Salom, Davies and the Italian Roberto Tamburini. Tamburini was the first to drop off the back of that group, followed by Lowes once Salom and Davies got past the young Englishman.
Once free of Lowes and Tamburini, Salom and Davies then caught Foret, but neither the Kawasaki rider nor the Yamaha man could get past the Frenchman. Salom's challenge faltered and Davies got past, and the Kawasaki rider dropped off the back of the leaders.
The podium was effectively settled, and though the front three were always close, they were never close enough to attack. Rea's lead was comfortable, and Davies prevaricated between risking an attack on Foret and settling for points. The race was decided two laps early, when oil on the track caused Race Direction to red-flag the race. An elated Rea took his first victory in a world championship class, Foret held on to 2nd, and Davies was content to take 3rd.
Davies' podium - an oustanding result after the ParkinGO Yamaha team's problems with chatter all weekend - put him firmly in control of the World Supersport championship. The Welshman now has a 36 point lead over Broc Parkes - who made another very costly mistake, crashing out for the second race in a row - with just 5 races left to go. Parkes is still 2nd, but with 12 points separating him from Sam Lowes in 6th, 2nd place in the championship is still completely open.
