Ominous signs from Repsol's two young guns. One still recovering from surgery and the other just getting familiar with the RCV. Dani only 0.2 secs off Rossi's 2009 circuit best record of 2:00.518 and seemingly doing it easy. Yamaha really must find some engine. Glimmers of hope for Bologna.

Wow, me thinks things would look a lot different if Rossi was still at Yamaha. Is this the start of the effect Rossi leaving will have. I can't help thinking he would be close to the top and JLO wpuldn't want to be second. Of course this is only testing but each blow still counts.
All those Hondas look pretty daunting. Especially Dani, that's a super quick lap and only his 4th of the day apparently. That kind of raw pace will be hard to match.

Rossi/Ducati work to do, impossible to tell progress due to Rossis shoulder but worth noting only a second or so behind second place. However Nicky being that far back has got to be worrying for ducati. I suspect Rossi isn't there to take over from Casey as such, more for Ducati to take over form whoever the dominant brand will be, hard to tell who that is at the mo.
Expecting hard charging tomorrow as riders puff their chests late on.. and early on of course to take advantage of the cooler track...

Two things that I hope come to fruition tomorrow : The weather holds good all day long.The other is that the teams can find space to work with a low fuel load,the softer option Bridgestone and test on track qualifying runs in the afternoon. As the testing is shaping up,grid positions may well prove paramount,race by race.
Speaking of fuel.I expect HRC have found the answer to fuel consumption over race distance.It cost them last year to some extent.
And yes,motodog-650,agree.HRC are throwing everything at 800's final year.
Ducati are doing likewise.Between Ducati/Honda/Yamaha,they all have points to prove.Suzuki,who knows ? They have the rider,but there is no recourse.
As far as the first 2 days of testing goes,well you read the time sheets.
The stopwatch is pretty unemotional at best.Mind you, so is Ben Spies.

I think Honda's commitment to winning a title in the 800 era may trump everything. I know, I know it's early but Honda is impressive - even their test rider was in the top 10 yesterday (if I remember correctly).

I also wonder if spies and J-Lo will have the same battles that Rossi and he did..

No offense to Dani, but I don't believe these times reflect his real race pace. Word on the street is that Dani still prefers the old Honda chassis derivation that has considerably more weight over the front end of the bike. If the bike has more weight over the front end, it has less propensity to wheelie which makes it a rocket ship. We saw the phenomenon of front end weight bias at Aragon last year when he turned up the wick to blow past people on the straight. Extra acceleration requires extra fuel so Dani didn't have enough fuel to keep pace with Stoner over the race distance.

Imo, these times today are not reflective of Dani's real pace, but reflective of what his bike can do when Puig and Leitner take the performance controls off of the RC212V. Sepang has two 900m straights, and plenty of slow turns that require lots of leap. This place is perfect for putting weight over the front and then turning up the wick.

None, but the particulars of this track and Dani's bike mean that he is well positioned to maximize the benefits of no fuel restrictions and no engine restrictions.

I don't think this is indicative of his pace relative to the rest of the field.

Stoner pointed out that there was no interest at all to test without fuel or engine restrictions since you won't get any useful information for winning a race.
I seriously doubt anyone out there would test like this other that at the end of the test with a soft tire on "qualifying" conditions.

Given the Ducati riders times on Day 2 are about top 5 from Day 1, surely there is an implication that their development program is just not as advanced as others? Dani's time is simply a reflection of the fact that he is a great rider who can bust off a time when required (yes, I am a fan). Casey's times on the other hand are classic Aussie, fast out of the box but low progression.

Really did not think I would see Dani up front so quick. Mostly due to him saying he was recovering from the Collarbone break he had last year. Even though he and Stoner seem to be getting along fine. You can bet Puig is back there in his ear saying, "If you do not beat him, (Stoner), every session in Testing, we will not be able to keep our influence at Honda."

Stoner has already said the bike feels good and the engine is smooth. He has gone out and been quick instantly, (which I bet Stoner could do on just about any bike). Honda is watching closely. It has been several years, and Nicky, the unloved child of Honda at one time won a title. But the one they felt was better seems to keep sliding backward or just not making it to #1. Watching these two is gonna be good. Honda is pulling no stops.

Spies! Looking strong! I know these are just tests, but they have got to indicate some of the pace for most. Rossi, you can bet will find extra pace when racing starts. Almost gauranteed. Everyone else looks to be where they are gonna be.

I have a strong feeling this season is going to be epic. All of the bikes have finally come up to par or thereabouts and all of the promising rookies are now seasoned vets on good machinery. What worries me is that finally, now that all of the bikes are equally competitive in their own right, the formula is going to change again... I have a feeling it's going to be 2007 all over again in 2012. As for my pick for the championship, I have to go with Lorenzo doing the repeat. Logic tells me Stoner will be unstoppable but I'm just not convinced that the Aussie can fully handle himself in a dog eat dog battle. And I'm sure there will be many of those this year. People to watch out for will of course be Spies and Simoncelli. Simoncelli takes a long time to get a hang of things, but once he's got the bit between his teeth he's the real deal. As for Spies, he's no stranger to winning championships on whatever you put beneath him. Spies will win at Indianapolis and Laguna.
