2010 Valencia MotoGP Qualifying Practice Result: Storming Lap Steals Pole In Final Seconds

Results and summary of qualifying for the MotoGP class at Valencia:

Casey Stoner has taken pole position for his last race on the Marlboro Ducati with a blistering lap at the very end of practice. Stoner had been fast from the beginning of the session, but had lost provisional pole to Jorge Lorenzo at the halfway mark, the Fiat Yamaha rider performing his usual trick of tightening the ratchet, until the pace is too hot for the rest to follow. Lorenzo kept chipping away, his lead looking ever more comfortable until Stoner's final scorching lap put nearly a third of a second on the 2010 World Champion.

San Carlo Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli's outstanding end to the season continued apace, the Italian rookie earning his first ever front row start in the MotoGP class, just a tenth of a second behind Lorenzo. After struggling in the early part of practice, Valentino Rossi pulled a fast lap out of the bag at the very end, to snatch 4th place, after having languished around the 10th position for much of qualifying. Rossi starts ahead of a trio of Americans, Kentucky's Nicky Hayden ending qualifying ahead of the Tech 3 Texan Twosome of Ben Spies and Colin Edwards.

Just went through the Yam/Rossi video. Good stuff. As tomorrow winds up or rather, winds down the season,I hope everyone keeps it rubber down.
Awesome demolition derby by Stoner. Rossi pulled something out the bag.
Never checked what compound he was on.

I just finished watching the replay of the MotoGP qualifying session. Rossi was on a softer rear (with white stripe) and harder front (no stripe) when he set his fastest lap towards the end of the session. I believe he was on the harder rear when he set his previous best time.

I think it will be a great race tomorrow.

That's really something. And Rossi's last lap came as a surprise.
Tomorrow could be a decent race, hoping than Dani, Vale and Ben injuries won't prevent them to push all the length of the race.

Question is: can you be ahead of the pack on turn 1 starting from 8th?

tomorrow's a straight fight between stoner and lorenzo, no question. stoner's edge being how fast he can go within the first few laps. we saw that with his 32.6s lap today on only his first flying lap. if lorenzo can stay with him in those early stages then we may have a classic battle to the flag. lorenzo has the home crowd and extra motivation to win his home race...he'll push to win it or bin it. simoncelli, hayden, dani, spies, rossi will fight for the last podium spot...tho i tip simoncelli for his very consistent times today and his aggression in battle. i pray tho that nicky can pull a backyard move to get on the podium. in all, with only pride at stake. tomorrow may just be a spectacular race to cap a lorenzoesque 2010 season

early over real estate and both are treated to a tumble for their efforts. Hayden, Rossi and Spies battle throughout with a mix of a few others to finish in that order on the podium. Checa battles hard to finish in the top 10. Just a WAG at what will actually happen.
