2010 Catalunya MotoGP Qualifying Practice Result - Another Scorching Lap Secures Pole

Results of qualifying for the MotoGP class UPDATED:

Jorge Lorenzo has secured his third pole in a row at Barcelona, with a late hot lap that secured his dominance of the MotoGP class. LCR Honda's Randy de Puniet led for much of the session, and looked like having a fair shot at pole, but as the pace hotted up in the final ten minutes, first Lorenzo and then Casey Stoner got ahead of the Frenchman, Lorenzo making it three in a row, and Stoner showing a clear improvement in pace.

De Puniet's pace came at the cost of Dani Pedrosa, the factory Repsol Honda rider forced to start from the front of the second row. Besides Pedrosa sits Monster Tech 3 Yamaha's Ben Spies in 5th, with Pedrosa's teammate Andrea Dovizioso rounding out the second row in 6th.

Pramac Ducati's Aleix Espargaro was initially credited with the 8th fastest time, but because he'd cut across the inside of Turn 2, he was penalized and dropped back to 12th.

Quite an exciting qualifying session actually and it's great to see the laptimes being so close together again.
Though I'm not sure the final positions really show what pace some of the riders can go. There are a few who've been hanging around the back of the field almost the entire session for one reason or another, seemingly way off the pace, and then did one quick lap out of nowhere to secure a good grid position. It will be interesting to see tomorrow if they were only able to pull that off once or have actually been slowly working towards a good setting and this is how fast they can go with it.

In any case, here's hoping tomorrow's race will bring us more excitement that the last few did. ;)

Jorge mentioned that originally they where set on the harder tire but now they are pondering whether to use the softer tire in the race.

"Random" de Puniet seems to have settled for the softer. Both Repsol Honda's showed 1:43.2 to 1:43.3 times equal to Jorge's race pace with hard tires but I don't know which tire the Repsols used.

As Jorge said, the massive improvement in lap times with the softer tire makes a possible degraded performance at race end managable.

Bridgestone bring two varieties of tyre to each race. One harder than the other. Both are expected to operate within the parameters of the climatic conditions of the venue at that time of year. 'Hard' and 'soft' are very arbitary terms that are not reflective of the actual performance of the rubber. I don't know about Barcelona but after a stinking hot day here in Deutschland it's cooling down and clouding over - maybe not as much as in Argentina though! Maybe 'soft' will be the way to go Sunday. That said I want nothing more than some good hard racing. We've had enough soft wins this year.

RDP is turning into the new Kevin Schwantz, and thats a good thing!

I also saw Spies go from 11th to 5th on his last flying lap, and he looked mad afterwards, I think one of the Pramac bikes partially blocked him so he might have been even quicker

If they do a shake up, it may as well go all the way. Depuniet at Repsol!

I read Spies' comment about Espargaro. Riders often complain about the lack of rear view mirrors on competitors bikes. They all better watch out when the grid gets even more crowded. If riders want clear tracks they should cry for a superpole. But I think Espargaro may be going to hell (or Texas, who can tell the difference?) for going against Spiesus Christ (the all mighty who would dominate if only he had a factory bike and a clear track in front of him)

Being a fairly new fan of the sport I don't have an historical perspective but it did seem like a lot of slow or taxiing riders were very much in the way. What is the point of looking back if you aren't going to move? Ben was lucky he had another lap on that tire.

I've also started watching the F1 race and that little whoopsie-do with Webber was very much on my mind a few times yesterday - most notably when Dani came up on...who was that?...DePuniet? and had to put his leg down to stop the bike. Egads.

By the bye, I like the sound of DePuniet at Tech 3; that is if we are going to be all matchy-matchy with riders and manufacturer's nationality (Rossi/Dukati, etc.). But of course this would mean a Hog for Ben and, well,...never mind. :p

...and "Spiesus Christ" still cracks me up.

That was hector, if I'm not mistaken. He seems to be in the way a lot. There was a lot of fist shaking during these quals, RDP, Spies, Stoner, Aleix... and there's very few bikes on a long track.

Stoner is right. There is far too much trolling going on from the also rans. It all makes the WSBK method look smart.

RDP is great. Whatever he is being paid, it's not enough. Maybe it's time for HRC to pull their head out of the sand and look what's laying on the door step. He is a man you can cheer for.

Lorenzo looks a bit slow, if you can say that about the pole sitter. Here's hoping someone can give him a race tomorrow. Go Randy!

Maybe with this extra time on the motors for set up, they can turn the qualifying session into knockout qualifying format. I've watched about 3 hours of Formula 1 in the last year or two. The most exciting part was the qualifying. I could skip the race but I'd watch qualifying every week if I still subscribed to SPEED TV. I have a MotoGP.com subscription and could watch every session, but I generally just watch the races and maybe a 2 or 3 qualifying session a year. If it were a knockout format I'd watch every one. As it is, it only gets exciting in the last 10 minutes. With a superpole knockout format you get that crunch-time over and over. Riders that make it further in the rounds have those few extra miles on the bike. Probably not a huge deal, but it could be seen as a tool to level the field between slower and faster teams.

I think anyone whining about tows is a bit selfish. It's not a drag on the rider in front. If they get in the way, lodge a complaint. There are rules for blocking traffic. I wonder how proud HRC will be with all the complaining. It ended Biaggi's career.

I think the guys that are waiting for the fast guys to tow them around or show them around should be respectful. It is one thing to use a more experienced rider to help you learn the circuit (normal actually and I think we would all agree) but to exploit him, jeopardize his fast lap or depend on him to pull you up is not cool. Similarly, blocking moves intentional or not, or lapping around to pit lane on the fast line should be penalized harshly. Overall this kind of poaching behaviour is a a sign of weakness not respect. There were many complaints of this today. Race control has to be stronger.
