2010 Catalunya Moto2 Qualifying Practice Result - Dramatic Lead Slashed In Final Seconds

Results of qualifying practice for Moto2 at Barcelona:

Andrea Iannone has taken yet another pole position in the Moto2 class. The FIMMCO Speed Up put in another sizzling lap to take top spot, and given that the Italian has won both races he has started from pole this year. Tech 3's Yuki Takahashi came close to matching Iannone's time on his final flying lap, but ran into Carmelo Morales in the final section, ending up just over a quarter of a second off Iannone's pole time. Interwetten's Thom Luthi was a comfortable 3rd, while local hero Toni Elias will round out the front row for the Moto2 race.

The FTRilia is really well sorted. It looks like a MotoGP bike when it goes round. The rear tire is bolted to the tarmac at all times. Iannone is doing a great job with the latest version of it. Could lead to an interesting situation b/c it's not just the fairings that make that bike work. It will be interesting to see whether or not SpeedUp pass any of the information back to FTR for exclusive chassis production or whether they find another chassis constructor who will build a bike to their specifications. One way or another, that bike is making the Moriwakis and Suters look a bit average.

Takahashi has shown that the Mistral is no slouch either. Too bad abou the run-in with Morales. Despite blocking Takahashi, Morales is having quite a run this weekend as a wild card. Sito must be conflicted.

BTW I love the livery of the Spanish CEV Promoharris bikes of Dani Rivas and Jordi Torres. The aquamarine metallic and neon yellow really pop in the Spanish sunshine.

Is the Speed Up chassis designed by FTR or only manufactured by it, in other words is it same as Debon's and Abraham's?

Debon probably is hurt from last races crash?

As I understand it, the Speed Up bike is an FTR chassis and swingarm, with the Speed Up guys (the former Aprilia factory guys) building their own subframe and fairing. I spoke to Steve Bones, the boss of FTR on Saturday morning, and he is very impressed with the work the Speed Up have done to the bike.

He is even more impressed with Debon. He has a plated collarbone, a damaged shoulder and two broken bones in his hand. But the only time you see him complain is when they take his glove off. He's tough.

AFAIK they designed the bike and the manufacture it. However, it is sold to the teams, not leased, so SpeedUp can do whatever they want to it as long as it still conforms to the class rules. As you can see they've already developed a completely different set of fairings. I think they've done a lot more to it than that b/c the bike looks really good.

Time will tell.
