2010 Assen MotoGP FP2 Result - Lorenzo Extends His Advantage

Jorge Lorenzo continued to top the timesheets in the second session of free practice at Assen, but unlike Thursday afternoon, the Fiat Yamaha rider stamped his authority on the session by taking a lead of over three tenths of a second. Lorenzo seized the initiative from Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner, who had led for much of the session, but could not match the Spaniard when Lorenzo upped the pace.

Dani Pedrosa ended the session in 3rd, normal service resuming with the remaining three Aliens topping the timesheets, while Ben Spies and Nicky Hayden were snapping at Pedrosa's tail in 4th and 5th, ahead of Randy de Puniet, the LCR Honda sporting sponsorship from local Dutch clothing brand REV'IT.

While FP1 ended up incident free, the second session of practice saw a number of riders go off track. The worst incident saw Marco Melandri run straight on at the new Ruskenhoek section, then mess up his re-entry onto the track. Instead of running through the escape route, the San Carlo Gresini Honda rider ran off onto the grass, the bike beginning to slide just as he hit the track again, causing Melandri to be catapulted off the bike in a giant highside. Melandri was taken away for inspection at the Clinica Mobile, where he was diagnosed with a suspected dislocated shoulder, and is doubtful for this afternoon's qualifying session. If Melandri is ruled out of the race tomorrow, we will be back down to 15 riders on the grid, including a replacement test rider. The grid is looking very threadbare once again.

It was a hell of an interesting session to watch. Happy to see Our Lord Spiesus Christ throwing down some hot laps. Melandri's crash looked pretty hardcore, and the overlay I saw on the video feed afterwards said he's been ruled unfit to ride tomorrow.

One thing that I've found annoying, I'd really like to see an onboard view of the final chicane before the S/F line, they always keep cutting to the tracking shots.

I missed how Hayden went down, did he lose the front?

So Jorge pulls away, Casey is stuck again, another unchallenged victory looms.

At least Dani improved and hopefully he catches up with Casey, so we'll at least se a battle for 2nd.

It's becoming customary for Dani to get a slow start to the weekend and he seems to come through stronger by the time QP comes along. I think we'll get a solid idea to see if he can maintain that pace during qualifying.

Will the Dani/Dovi position seesaw continue? Only time will tell!

What is it with all the heavy crashes lately?

Is everyone going at it harder? Have the Bridgetone tyres become even less predictable? Are traction control systems dialled on minimum intervention?

Yes - probably not - probably not.

Violent highsides have always been a result of riding to the ultimate edge of the available traction.

A new cause is that if there is a computer glitch while on the edge of your tire at 130 mph and you get pitched off - the tire or a bump will most likely get blamed, instead of your home office computer programmer where the problem originated.

Bring back carburetors. The highsides will still happen but at least it will be the riders own fault.

Its just like stoner said, all the safety and computers riders are just pushing too hard and relying on these things...
So now we have 15 (14 real) riders for Sunday's race? Anybody else think the Moto2 has become the race to watch? The only thing I dislike about it is the single manufacturer, the grids are big enough and they could still regulate the other manufacturers enough so the races would be just as close. I'd love to see Ducati, Suzuki, and Yamaha bikes out there. It might be the one catagory Suzuki would ever have a chance in! Was it just my imagination or was Ducati sporting their moto2 bike originally, I mean wayyy before the catagory had materialized. I thought I saw all sorts of pictures of their prototype moto2? Anybody?

In terms of concept I definitely have an issue with Moto2 being a spec engine, but the racing is savagely competitive and to me that makes-up for the "lack of purity" on the mechanical side.

MotoGP is already complicated enough to satisfy the most tech-minded fans, but forme, Moto" is the race I look forward to most.
