Under a rapidly darkening Wisconsin sky, Graves Yamaha's Josh Hayes beat Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Tommy Hayden for the win in today's first American Superbike race of the weekend. Hayes quickly assumed the lead at turn three of the first lap and Hayden shadowed him for most of the race, never trailing by over a quarter-second. By lap eight Hayes' R1 was getting a little squirmy in the corners as an eerily smooth on the brakes Hayden kept applying relentless pressure. On the next lap, Hayden showed his hand with a Duhamel Draft up the final hill to pip Hayes at the line, but the Graves Yamaha rider braked late into turn 1 and kept the lead. Hayden maintained steady pressure on the leader, showing him a wheel through the Kink and Canada Corners.
Hayden duplicated his drafting strategy coming up the ten storey hill to start/finish and took the lead going into the penultimate lap. On the last go-round, coming off the 180mph back straight into turn five, Hayes outbraked Hayden to take the lead for what would turn out to be the last time. Although Hayden made a strong charge coming up to the line for the checkers and timing showed him with a .001 margin of victory, a photo replay showed that Hayes had taken the win by a wheel's length distance.
Hayden's Rockstar Makita teammate, Blake Young, ran a lonely third for most of the race until Larry Pegram caught up and passed the Wisconsin native on lap twelve but Young regrouped and passed the the Foremost Ducati rider on the last corner for the final step on the box.
