2010 Jerez 125cc Race Result - War Of Attrition Brings Comfortable Victory

Results and summary of 125cc race at Jerez:

Pol Espargaro has won the first race of the day at Jerez, sending the Spanish crowd into a frenzy. They did not need much prompting, though as the 125cc class' Spanish contingent broke away from the very start of the race. Espargaro and his Tuenti Derbi teammate Efren Vazquez, Bancaja Aspar's Nico Terol, Blusens' Tito Rabat and Red Bull's Marc Marquez made the break off the line, but Marquez did not make it as far as the first lap, the Spaniard crashing out at Turn 12.

The remaining four Spaniard pushed on, swapping places throughout the preliminary laps. The battle at the front allowed Avant Ajo's Sandro Cortese to chased down the leaders, catching them on lap 5 and starting to push his way forward on the next lap. The pace and the battle were too intense for Rabat, the Blusens rider dropping off the back a couple of laps later.

Meanwhile, the lead swapped continuously, though Espargaro and Terol had the best of the group, taking the lion's share of the lead. By lap 10, Cortese looked like he had used up the best of his tires, dropping off the back of the group, but the German recovered within a couple of laps. His return would not last long, however, the rear linkage on his Ajo Derbi breaking, leaving him struggling to lap 4 seconds slower than the leaders.

The four had become three, but Espargaro and Terol were strongest, Vazquez dropping off the back of the leaders. In a desperate attempt to get back to them, the Tuenti rider tried to close on the brakes, entering the corner too quickly and crashing out. With Vazquez gone, it was between Terol and Espargaro, but Espargaro had been kinder on his tires, and eventually broke away to win by nearly a second. Terol ended the day in 2nd, while Tito Rabat, who had had to let the leaders go so early, saw his patience rewarded to end up on the podium, completing a Spanish 1-2-3. Bradley Smith finished the race not far behind Rabat in 4th, while his fellow British rider Danny Webb crashed out with just two laps to go.
