2010 Jerez MotoGP Result - Stoner Leads, Despite Lowside

Casey Stoner picked up at Jerez where he left off at Qatar, by grasping the first session of free practice for the MotoGP riders by the scruff of the neck and leading almost from his first lap. The Marlboro Ducati rider remained virtually unchallenged throughout. Stoner's only mistake was losing the front at the Dry Sack corner, sliding out unhurt with just a few minutes of the session left.

But the big lead that Stoner pulled out in the early part of the session did not last. Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo whittled away at it slowly, taking off a tenth here and a tenth there until he ended the session in 2nd spot, just 0.144 seconds off Stoner's time. Nicky Hayden's form from Qatar also continued, setting the 3rd fastest time, four tenths behind his Australian teammate and just ahead of Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa looked a good deal smoother here than at Qatar, the bike bucking and weaving significantly less than three weeks ago. Valentino Rossi's shoulder appears to be slowing the Fiat Yamaha rider down, the Italian ending in 5th place, just over six tenths off Stoner's time.

So this year we have the two fold development of reduced track time and rubber available, together with limitations on the number of engines in use. Put these facts together and you'll find a rider needs to be fast from the off on Friday to dial in the bike & tyres whilst not putting too many miles on the engine. It all adds up to extra pressure on a rider to be quick straight away and may well lead to more crashes in practice as they push beyond their immediate comfort level rather than build up to it.

Nicky is lookin good already this weekend. Spies usually starts out slow and then builds to a crescendo. The Doctor is ill. the Spainiards are restless. The Aussie Duc is quackin.

The suspense is killing me! I should be there!

SV, it would be so dam great to be there...!!! just the noise of the Spanish wild life!! all the air horns and crackers.
Just the 5 hours wait to get in to the track would kill it for me.

Found a little tidbit kind of interesting in Eurosport's coverage today. Tom Tremayne of Bridgestone, stated that all of the tires that were due to go to Japan are already there. The same tires will be used even though the race will be held almost half a year later.
It looks as if the temperatures are similar during those times of the year. Still...it would be unthinkable 5 years ago.
