2010 Portimao WSS Race Results - Brutal Last Lap Passes Decide Tight Race

Results and summary of the World Supersport race at Portimao:

Kenan Sofuoglu came away from Portimao with a hard-fought victory in second World Supersport race of the season, taking over as championship leader after a crucial mistake by Eugene Laverty. Laverty had tried to escape from the start, but Michele Pirro and Joan Lascorz soon latched on to the Parkalgar Honda rider's tail, later joined by Sofuoglu. After a brief scuffle, Sofuoglu made short work of his Ten Kate Honda teammate, bludgeoning under Pirro at Turn 12 to scrap with Lascorz and Laverty.

Laverty looked to be in control, but Sofuoglu was pushing hard. The Turkish rider pulled out of Laverty's slipstream over the line with 5 laps to go, jamming his bike under Laverty as they entered Turn 1, with Lascorz taking advantage to bump Laverty down to 3rd. Laverty pushed hard to get back at Lascorz and Sofuoglu, but found the limit and went over, losing the front and crashing out, later rejoining to finish 11th.

A thrilling battle on the last lap saw Joan Lascorz make the first move, whipping smoothly out of Sofuoglu's slipstream to take the lead into Turn 1, but Sofuoglu had a trick up his sleeve. That proved to be the same move he had put on his teammate, jamming his Ten Kate Honda up the inside of Lascorz' Motocard.com's Kawasaki, then holding the Spaniard off to the line, taking a narrow victory and the narrowest of championship leads. Michele Pirro crossed the line in 3rd to take the final podium spot.

Sofuoglu has 41 points in the championship, while Lascorz has 40. After his crash, Laverty is in 3rd, 11 points behind Sofuoglu.
