2009 Assen MotoGP Race Result - Runaway Victory

Results and synopsis of the MotoGP race at Assen:

Valentino Rossi took his 100th victory in style at Assen, taking the lead on the second lap from Casey Stoner. From that point on, the Italian's supremacy was never threatened, though his team mate Jorge Lorenzo chased the Italian for the first 15 laps. Stoner couldn't follow Lorenzo, but was a very comfortable 3rd. Dani Pedrosa followed early on, but crashed out at the Haarbocht, the first corner after the straight, his team mate Andrea Dovizioso following several laps later.

Naturally, Rossi had a celebration for his 100th victory: in front of the special Rossi stand at the Stekkenwal corner, Rossi unfurled a huge banner with pictures of all his victories, and a big 100 at the end of it.

Colin Edwards took 4th by a comfortable margin, while Chris Vermeulen had a similarly comfortable margin in 5th. The battle for 6th was the best of the race, with 6 riders all battling it out. Mika Kallio crashed in the final corner, while Toni Elias was penalized 20 seconds for a dangerous pass on Loris Capirossi, and dropped from 8th to 12th.
