2009 World Supersport Misano QP Result - Damp Session Throws Up Pole Surprise

Results and summary of Qualifying for the World Supersport class at Misano:

Michele Pirro claimed pole for tomorrow's World Supersport race at Misano, after a mixture of wet and dry conditions threw the session into disarray. The session started out wet, with all the riders taking to the track, but within a couple of minutes the rain started coming down heavier, and most people headed fr the pits.

That first rain shower left the grid looking topsy turvy, with names such as Danilo Dell'Omo and Arie Vos, riders usually scrapping over the final point, provisionally ensconced on the second row of the grid. But as the session went on, the track began to dry out, and in a hectic final 10 minutes, some semblance of normality returned.

In the end it was Pirro who was fastest, and sits on pole for tomorrow. The Italian has been fast all weekend, and has gone from being just outside the top 5 at other tracks to well inside the top 3 at Misano. Cal Crutchlow was tantalisingly close to the Italian, coming up just one hundredth of a second short of Pirro's time, while Massimo Roccoli was just a thousandth of a second behind Crutchlow in 3rd. Kawasaki's Katsuake Fujiwara completes the front row.

The Triumph of Gianluca Nannelli heads up the second row, while Ant West showed that he is not just quick in the wet, taking 6th, ahead of fellow Australian Mark Aitchison. Eugene Laverty sits in 8th, the last spot on the second row, and heads the riders who lost out in the changing conditions. Laverty sits ahead of reigning champion Andrew Pitt, the Spanish star Joan Lascorz and the winner last time out at Miller, Kenan Sofuoglu.

Laverty, Pitt, Sofuoglu and Lascorz have left themselves with plenty to do tomorrow, and will need to get superb starts to catch championship leader Cal Crutchlow. With rain possible tomorrow as well, it should be a fascinating race.
