2009 Mugello 125cc Race Result - Masterful Win In Dry Conditions

125cc Race result and summary:

The 125cc race at Mugello started out in typically unpredictable fashion, a large group leading from the start with the main contenders, swapping places at the front. On lap 6, Bradley Smith took charge and got a tiny gap. Smith was helped by Andrea Iannone, who was leading the chase for Smith, having the chain leap off his sprocket, causing him to pull up and the riders behind him back off a fraction.

Iannone's misfortune also allowed Julian Simon and Nicolas Terol to break the tow from the group, and chased the British rider down, making it three for the lead. After swapping the lead for a while, the group settled down into some form of order, with Smith leading, and Simon and Terol following, Terol practicing his drafting skills down the front straight. It was clear that winner would come from this group, the question was, which of the three.

With a couple of laps to go, Smith put his head down, challenging Simon and Terol to follow. First it was only Simon who could follow, but with three laps left, Simon suddenly dropped off the pace, his bike developing some kind of problem. Terol caught Smith back, but could not challenge the Briton.

Bradley Smith went on to take his second win of the season in very impressive form, and the lead in the championship. Terol was forced to settle for second, and Julian Simon managed to hang on for 3rd.

The battle for 4th had turned into a typical slugfest, with a group of 8 riders capable of taking the spot. Danny Webb looked like a prime candidate, but crashed out on lap 8. In the end, it came down to Pol Espargaro, Scott Redding, Marc Marquez, Johann Zarco and Sandro Cortese. Redding and Cortese had moments in the final corner, Redding staying on board, Cortese crashing, leaving 4th to Pol Espargaro ahead of Marc Marquez.

Honorable mention goes to Italian rookie Lorenzo Savadori, pipped at the line by Stefan Bradl for 8th.
