2009 World Superbikes Miller Superpole - Surprise Surprise?

Superpole 1

Ben Spies was fastest at the start, going out and setting two fast laps from the off. Fabrizio followed Spies example, but was forced out of 2nd by Jakub Smrz with 3 minutes left. With just a few seconds of the session left, Jamie Hacking put in a blistering lap to take provisional pole. Shane Byrne crashed early, but had already set a fast enough lap to qualify, though he had to run back to the pits to get back on a bike.

Meanwhile, in the distance, thunderstorms are brewing, and lightning can be seen in the distance.

Out: Gregorio Lavilla, David Salom, Lorenzo Lanzi, Karl Muggeridge

Superpole 2

Ryuichi Kiyonari took an early lead with a very fast 1'48 lap, but he was quickly deposed by Ben Spies, who went 0.3 seconds quicker. Michel Fabrizio then also edged Kiyonari.

Max Biaggi crashed with 6 minutes to go, before setting a time. He leapt on a scooter and was rushed back to the pits, getting back just in time to go out for another lap. Unfortunately for Biaggi, he went out just as very light rain started, and failed to improve his time. Johnny Rea seemed to have a technical problem, and parked his bike at the top of pit lane after failing to make it through to Superpole 3.

Out: Noriyuki Haga, Shinya Nakano, Johnny Rea, Leon Haslam, Yukio Kagayama, Fonsi Nieto, Luca Scassa, Max Biaggi.

Superpole 3

Carlos Checa took an early lead, but it was not to last long. Ben Spies was flying with 7 minutes to go, and laid down the first mark with a 1'48.344. Spies timing was immaculate, setting the quickest lap just as the rain started to fall more heavily. The race for Superpole was basically over, giving Spies his 7th Superpole in a row, and taking the pole record from Doug Polen. Spies may have been lucky with the timing of his lap, but his lap was still 0.6 faster than anyone else. Everyone faced the same conditions, and had the same chance, but it was Ben Spies that came out on top.

Amazing effort... old boy needs a ride in SBK. Has more heart then half of the paddock.

To Spies... made my eyes water when I heard he took it. When history is made I notice it.

1st season and people question his ability. anymore? ok.
