Results and report for the 250cc Qualifying Practice session at Jerez:
Qualifying for the 250cc class at Jerez turned up quite a surprise. The fact that a Spaniard ended up on pole - making it a clean sweep for Spanish riders at the first of their home Grand Prix - was a pretty safe bet, but there were very few people who reckoned on it being Alex Debon aboard the privateer Aeropuero Castello Blusens machine. Debon took first place with 6 minutes of the session left, deposing early leader Marco Simoncelli on the Gilera. And as Simoncelli prepared to counter-attack with 3 minutes left on the clock, the Italian folded the front in the fast Senna corner, sliding out in exactly the same place as he crashed this morning. Despite his wild tumble through the gravel, Simoncelli walked away unhurt.
Simoncelli's crash also meant he was unable to counter Hector Barbera, who took 2nd in front of the Italian after the flag had fallen for the end of the session. Alvaro Bautista, the man whose name everyone had pencilled in for pole, could only manage the 4th fastest time, though the Spaniard will be pleased to start from pole.
Another suprise package heads up the second row, as Matteoni Racing's Jules Cluzel confirms his strong form with the 5th quickest time. Cluzel edged out Hiroshi Aoyama, the Scot Honda rider who has been right at the sharp end all weekend. Mike di Meglio and Thomas Luthi complete the second row.
