2023 Austria Moto2 Practice 3 Result: Acosta Steals Another Record

By Zara Daniela | Sat, 19/08/2023 - 08:06

Sun broke through the clouds at the Red Bull Ring for a front row seat to Pedro Acosta setting a new all time lap record in the intermediate class, the Spaniard leading the way on Friday and then only briefly handing over to Somkiat Chantra in P3, before claiming the record lap time. Chantra was left three tenths of a second back, as the only other rider to drop into the 1:33s, while teammate Ai Ogura was best of the rest, over half a second behind the leader.

Albert Arenas and Celestino Vietti joined the top five ahead of Jake Dixon and Filip Salac. While rival Acosta was hunting for records, Tony Arbolino took a fast tumble at turn seven and was forced to sit out the final half of the session, but the Italian was helped in keeping a Q2 place by Friday’s benchmark, leaving him eighth on the combined timesheets. Aron Canet and Manuel Gonzalez completed the top 10, while the remaining tickets to Q2 were handed out to Zonta van den Goorbergh, Fermín Aldeguer, Sam Lowes and Alonso Lopez. Marcos Ramirez missed out by only seven thousandths of a second in his new American Racing colours and will be taking part in Q2 alongside the likes of Darryn Binder, Dennis Foggia and Joe Roberts, who took a late tumble at the turn two chicane.
