2023 Le Mans Moto3 Qualifying Result: Total Domination And Timing Troubles

By Zara Daniela | Sat, 13/05/2023 - 11:48

Track conditions were back to fully dry asphalt under a nearly cloudless sky ahead of the lightweight class qualifying sessions and provided a nice spotlight for Ayumu Sasaki to shine under. The Japanese rider led the way after the first run in Q2 and went on to improve all on his lonesome to secure pole position by three tenths of a second. There was a bit of confusion around the rest of the front row line-up, with several lap times reinstated after the chequered flag due to a timing error, which resulted in title rivals Diogo Moreira and Dani Holgado joining the front row.

Q1 leader Andrea Migno was as high as second at the chequered flag, despite ending the session with a crash at the final corner but got diverted on his way to parc fermé by news of his demotion to fourth. The Italian will be joined on the second row by Ivan Ortolá and practice leader Jaume Masia, while Deniz Öncü opens third row ahead of Xavi Artigas and a career best qualifying of ninth for Syarifuddin Azman. Jose Antonio Rueda completes the top 10, sharing fourth row with Q1 graduates David Salvador and Stefano Nepa.

One of the big stories of Q1 was Tatsuki Suzuki stuck down in 24th position on the grid, between Kaito Toba and David Alonso, while rookie Collin Veijer missed out on Q2 by only six hundredths of a second, not helped by a highside on his final lap, and will be starting 19th.
