Navarro shows his intentions at Silverstone

Fourth fastest time for Repsol rider, very competitive throughout the first day. Teammate Fabio Quartararo places thirteenth and Maria Herrera, twenty-eighth.

Jorge Navarro is showing at recent races, at circuits he rode at last season, that he is a top contender for a Grand Prix podium debut. The young Repsol rider has battled with the fastest riders in the class as of late, coming close to a rostrum and even victory. To date, his goal has eluded him, but Navarro continues to work hard for it. His top time this morning at Silverstone and fourth in the second free practice session prove as much. The Spaniard was just 4 tenths off the quickest time of the day, set by Romano Fenati.

Teammate Fabio Quartararo made considerable improvements throughout the first day. In the morning session, the Frenchman finished almost two seconds down on his teammate, in nineteenth. In the afternoon, the Repsol rider lowered his times by nearly 2 seconds to pull himself up to thirteenth place on the combined timesheet.

Maria Herrera feels especially comfortable at Silverstone. In the morning session, the Repsol rider set the twenty-fourth fastest time, giving a sign that the track is one that she enjoys. In the afternoon, some experiments with the setup of her bike and traffic on the track prevented her from improving on her FP1 position, but she did lower her best time by just over a second.

Saturday sees a third free practice held in the morning, and qualifying in the afternoon to decide the grid for Sunday.

Fabio Quartararo 13th 2:15.607 30 laps 177 km

"Today was a difficult day but we improved a lot in the second session. This morning I struggled a lot, but I am slowly learning the circuit better. Tomorrow we will work to find a good setup. This morning I tried to follow other riders, because it is difficult to ride alone at this track, but I couldn't latch onto anyone. In addition, the wind was quite strong today and we had to make some changes to the setup of the bike because the front was sliding out a lot."

Jorge Navarro 4th 2:14.895 29 laps 171 km

"Last year we struggled a lot at Silverstone, but this year things are different. Today was a good day and we worked well from the first free practice. The feeling improved with every stint and that allowed us to work on the setup to find improvements. In the last run tried some things out with the front and I improved my feeling. Tomorrow the aim will be to work as we did today, using both new and worn tyres in order to prepare as well as possible for the race."

Maria Herrera 28th 2:17.084 29 laps 171 km

"I had never ridden at Silverstone before and I like the circuit; I felt comfortable right from the first moment. We are setting up the bike and we still have a little way to go, but I think we are on track to improve a lot and lower the times we achieved today. On my last run I encountered some other riders who got in my way a little. That, and the fact that the times improved a lot at the end, left us a little behind, but we will improve tomorrow."


Moto3 - The work starts for San Carlo Team Italia at Silverstone Circuit

Favorable weather conditions mitigated the inaugural day of activity of the Moto3 World Championship at Silverstone, twelfth seasonal round that saw the Italian riders as main protagonists of the first two sessions of free practice. Thanks to a remarkable 2'14''459 in the FP2, Romano Fenati (KTM) preceded of 110 thousandths the winner of the last Brno's Gran Prix, Niccolò Antonelli (Honda): it's an all-Italian double characterized by two riders that shared the garage of Team Italia FMI in 2011, in a triumphal season between CIV and the only round of the European 125 Championship in Albacete.

Concerning San Carlo Team Italia, Matteo Ferrari (2'17''603,31st) and Stefano Manzi (2'18''056, 33rd) faced more difficulties than expected in the afternoon session, for this reason they were not able to repeat the encouraging start highlighted in the inaugural session of free practice.

Working on different aspects of their Mahindra MGP3O, the two riders of the Italian Motorcycling Federation hope to improve their position in the standings tomorrow, in order to reach a good position on the grid for the race scheduled on Sunday at local 14:30 (15:30 in Italy).

Matteo Ferrari (San Carlo Team Italia - Mahindra MGP3O #12) 31st, 2'17"603

"The first session was not that bad, the premises were right and there was scope for improvement. In the pause between the two sessions we made a modifying on the front that worked, it allowed me to find again the feeling in a point where I used to suffer in the last period. In the standings, we are far from our real potential, but the team already know where we have to work to make some steps forward. The T4 is our main problematic, at the end of the Turn 15 I lose too much compared with the other riders while accelerating. If I modify a little my riding style and we make some little changes in the set-up, I am sure that tomorrow we will find the right solutions to do our best."

Stefano Manzi (San Carlo Team Italia - Mahindra MGP3O #29) 33rd, 2'18"056

"This morning we started quite well, and sometimes we were in the top-20, with a good feeling on the bike. In the second session, the first "run" wasn't bad, but I can't tell the same for the rest of the session. We weren't able to reach good results, so we need to work to find again our level of competitiveness in view of the qualifying of tomorrow."

Cristiano Migliorati (Sports Manager - San Carlo Team Italia Moto3)

"The first session of practice was influenced by the low temperatures, so they're not very relevant for the performances on track. I expected something more in the afternoon, in particular a pace in 2'17'' for both our riders and some time attack on 2'16'' with new tyres. Unfortunately right now we ride on a pace of 2'18'', so we need to work hard from now on, in order to understand if it's about the set-up or if our riders still has to find the conditions to give their best. For this reason the analysis isn't positive, we hope for a good dose of confidence and determination to improve for tomorrow's official qualifying."


Fenati on top, Migno in seventh: the Sky Racing Team VR46 in front right from the start as the Silverstone weekend gets underway

Great teamwork and right strategies on the first day of free practice

Silverstone, August 28, 2015. Romano Fenati (2'14.459) on top of the timesheets while Andrea Migno ends in seventh (2'15.210): the Sky Racing Team VR46 gave its best in the first two free practice sessions on the Silverstone track, especially in the second round when the riders got really acquainted with the track ahead of the race. On Sunday, in fact, the light-weight class race gets underway at 2.30 pm local time (3.30pm in Italy) and track conditions, except for weather changes, are expected to be like today’s. It was quite a fruitful Friday on which the riders had the chance to get acquainted with the track ahead of Sunday’s race when Fenati will be expected to extend his recent positive streak, while Migno will have the chance to measure himself on a track he knows well and that last year hosted his debut.

Great teamwork and right strategies: above all in the last five minutes, the slipstreams turned out to be key with Romano driving Migno in the top ten and topping the timesheets himself.

THE TEAM

PABLO NIETO / Team Manager

It was quite a good free practice day. Both Romano and Andrea have done very well on this track. It will be key to try and keep this pace because there is still much to be done as it’s just Friday. Tomorrow we will have to stay focused just as we have been today and, most importantly, do a great job ahead of the race. I am very happy with the work both riders have done. What’s more, I even think Andrea’s very season is starting right now: last year he debuted just on this track and from now on, he will have the chance to ride on tracks he knows well. I think we will now be seeing a different Migno on the track.

ROMANO FENATI / Rider

It was quite a good day, I like the bike and my aim is to improve further in order to lead the way, as we did this afternoon. Tomorrow we will have to make just a few slight changes in the set-up, but that does not mean we can still let our guard down as there are many other riders pushing hard. I want to thank the team that in the two sessions was able to figure out exactly what I needed.

ANDREA MIGNO / Rider

I had good feelings since this very morning. We are happy with the bike, we did a great job in both free practice sessions. Now we will have to dwell on those aspects that show room for improvement, but we are on a sound footing to get to qualifying with a good race pace.


TOUGH DAY ONE AT SILVERSTONE FOR BASTIANINI AND LOCATELLI

The British Grand Prix started uphill for Gresini Racing Team Moto3 racers Enea Bastianini and Andrea Locatelli, who closed the combined classification of today’s first two free practice sessions at Silverstone in 18th and 26th position, respectively.

Bastianini, who crashed halfway through the second session when he lost the front at turn 16, failed to improve the lap time of 2’16”104 obtained in the morning, struggling with a lack of front end feeling.

His team mate Locatelli instead clocked 2’16”718: the 18-year-old rider from Selvino struggled to make his bike turn on the fast corners: in the afternoon session his fastest time of 2’15”9 was in fact cancelled for exceeding track limits. Andrea was nevertheless quite satisfied with the feeling reached with the bike and he’s confident he can improve tomorrow.

ENEA BASTIANINI (18th - 2'16"104)

“This morning the first session went pretty well, although actually we were using the Brno set-up, and so it was not possible to figure out which direction to take. In the afternoon, then, it went really bad: we couldn’t understand anything because halfway through the session I also crashed, losing almost all the time available. I managed to get back on track only in the last stages, but obviously the situation was exactly the same: I have no feeling with the front, so now we will try to find out what’s wrong”.

ANDREA LOCATELLI (26th - 2'16"718)

“Today I struggled in different parts of the track, especially I often go wide in the fast corners and it’s for this reason that at some point I exceeded the track limits and as a result it was deleted my fastest lap. We must work to solve this problem: on Turn 10 I can’t be as smooth and fast as the other riders, and also on Turn 15 I can’t make the bike turn as I want. The T3 is instead a sector where I’m already going well. Anyway, I'm pretty confident: my feeling with the bike is not bad and we can improve tomorrow”.

FAUSTO GRESINI

“Our Grand Prix started uphill, no doubt: Enea has no feeling with the bike and the crash he had during the afternoon caused him to miss the entire second practice session. Locatelli also had some difficulties, so we hope we can improve tomorrow. It was a difficult day and there is not much to say: we look forward to tomorrow’s practice to continue our work”.


First day at Silverstone in the middle group

Livio Loi set off for the British Grand Prix in the middle group. His fastest lap of the day (2.16,477) was good for 21st in FP2, 2 seconds behind provisional pole sitter Romano Fenati. Only the first ten were within a second of each other.

Loi had to get used to the characteristics of the longest track of the season, with its wide and fast corners. With the temperatures rising in the afternoon and grip improving things got better and Loi was able to go faster and decrease the gap to the front runners a bit.

“For sure it got better, but the steps should have been a bit bigger,” RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen thought. “It wasn’t yet consistent enough. The thing with Silverstone is to keep the gas open and try to run the wide lines. The shortest way – the inside of the corners – is not necessarily the fastest way. But that is a matter of learning by doing it.”

Livio Loi – 21 (2.16,477)

“Silverstone is not the easiest track. When you have the right line in one corner, you might go wrong in the next one. It’s all about corner speed. Especially in sector 3 I’m losing too much. There definitely is room for improvement.”


Fast start for Rabat and Marquez at Silverstone

Silverstone, Great Britain - 28 August 2015: Cool and windy conditions on the opening day of practice for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone didn’t stop Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS riders Tito Rabat and Alex Marquez from posting fast and competitive lap times.

The Spanish duo finished fourth and fifth, with Rabat holding the upper hand over his fast improving teammate Marquez by just 0.015s.

A lap of 2.08.232 from 2014 Silverstone winner Rabat was just 0.228s off the fastest pace.

But the quickest lap of the day was still almost a second of the 26-year-old’s 2013 lap record, with chilly ambient and track temperatures not helping the field break the 2.08 barrier.

Boosted by a brilliant season best fourth place finish last time out in Brno, Marquez showed great potential and speed on the fast and technically challenging Silverstone layout, which at 3.666 miles is the longest on the 18-round World Championship schedule.

Marquez was particularly impressive in this afternoon’s FP2, the 19-year-old knocking off a massive 1.3s compared to his best pace this morning.

The strong start from Rabat and Marquez bodes well for a double podium challenge from the pair for the second round in succession in Sunday morning’s 18-lap race.

Tito Rabat: 4th - 2’08.232

“It was not an easy day because the conditions are so cool that it means I have no stability from the rear when I open the throttle. I have a lot of sliding but we checked both rear tyre options and the performance wasn’t so bad. The gap to the front is not so big but we have to find some improvements tomorrow. The key once again will be the weather because it can he hard to predict.”

Alex Marquez: 5th - 2’.08.247

“I am really happy to make a start like today because Silverstone is a track I really love. I think this is easily the best Friday I have done this season and I am really happy to continue the good way we found in Brno. The team worked so well today on improving the bike and I have a good pace, even if the conditions were not ideal. I think we can improve to find a more constant rhythm and we will need to improve because we know everybody will make a step forward.”


FRUSTRATING DAY FOR TEAM FEDERAL OIL GRESINI MOTO2 IN ENGLAND

The first day of practice for the British Grand Prix saw Xavier Siméon and the Team Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 closing the combined classification in 19th position, with a gap of nearly 1.2 seconds from the top: a result below expectations for the Belgian rider and for all the team, confident that they can return in England to the levels of competitiveness they have been showing throughout the first half of the season.

In the afternoon session Siméon improved by almost half a second his lap times from the morning, going down to 2’09”200; a performance that however at the moment doesn’t allow him to stay close to the fastest.

XAVIER SIMÉON (19th - 2'09"200)

“It’s a big disappointment to close the first day with this gap… After the Brno race I arrived here at Silverstone in high spirits, leaving behind my shoulders the difficult weekend we had lived in the Czech Republic; unfortunately here we are struggling again, and it’s also very difficult to understand why. What is certain is that after Sachsenring I didn’t expect to start the second half of the season in this way. I don’t have much else to say: tomorrow we will definitely try some set-up changes to try to reduce the gap and change this situation, which of course no one likes”.

FAUSTO GRESINI

“As happened in Brno, we are struggling also here. We know we have great potential, but at the moment we can’t exploit it: tomorrow we will try to understand why, in order to get out of this difficult situation. We remain focused and we look forward, waiting for an improvement”.


Red Bull KTM Ajo start out at Silverstone

Positive practice sessions for Oliveira, Hanika and Binder, concluding the day with the eighth, ninth and twelfth best laps, respectively.

08/28/2015 - Silverstone Circuit, Great Britain

The always unpredictable British weather was atypically pleasant on Friday at Silverstone, without a trace of rain and only wind making things difficult for the Moto3 riders. After showing a strong pace in the morning practice session, the Red Bull KTM Ajo riders all completed the opening day of the twelfth round of the year in the Top 15. Miguel Oliveira was eighth, with Karel Hanika ninth and Brad Binder following close behind in twelfth place.

Binder and Oliveira got onboard their KTM bikes willing to work for the top positions from the start, alternating at the head of the timesheet before their first and only pit stop. In the second stint, the Red Bull KTM Ajo duo again lowered their times. Binder took second place in FP1 -2:15.778- and fourth place went to Oliveira -2:16.082. Karel Hanika, sick throughout all of the past week, had a positive first 40 minutes on track and ended the session with the eleventh best lap -2:16.471.

The second session did not start in the best way for Binder, as a mechanical problem with the rear shock forced him to return to the garage after his opening lap. This did not prevent him from getting back on track, and he lowered his lap times for twelth -2:15.543. Hanika improved by more than a second at the end of FP2, setting a time of 2:15.297 for ninth. He was just behind Oliveira -2:15.246- who was pleased to set his time riding by himself.

Tomorrow at 12:35 local time, the Red Bull KTM Ajo riders will fight to return to the front row in qualifying -after missing out at the last round.

44 MIGUEL OLIVEIRA

"I am happy with this first day at Silverstone, because it is a circuit where the weather is always uncertain and quite windy. After a good first session, in the second we again improved our times, always riding alone. That is very positive, particularly when there are gusts of wind blowing through. There are few things we can improve in terms of the bike; just small details that will be discussed this afternoon. The first sector is one where we have more rome to improve, because you have to take the corners very well in order to not lose tenths. Overall, I am satisfied with the work today -because we were fast without the help of slipstreams."

41 BRAD BINDER

"The truth is that I felt pretty good in both sessions. The only thing is that in the second session we had a mechanical problem with the rear shock right at the start, and that is where we lost some time and I could only put in two good laps. It's a shame. The rest of the day went pretty well. The morning session was very good, I felt comfortable from the opening laps and we pushed much as we could. If we return to the setup from the first session, I think we can do well. I'm confident."

98 KAREL HANIKA

"I couldn't wait to get back riding. I've been sick all through the past week and I'm still on medication, but when you get on the bike you forget everything and you are only focused on doing your job.

We are trying to find the best setup for this circuit but it is not easy, because it's quite windy. Furthermore, in FP1 we lacked a lot of grip, so we did not want to risk too much. We tried to focus on the fast corners that are not easy to take in the wind. In the last session we took an important step forward; I tried to change some aspects of my riding and we also introduced changes to the front end that proved positive.

In the end, we have found the right way to go and we must continue like this tomorrow."


DECENT START FOR LEOPARD RACING IN ENGLAND

Leopard Racing’s Danny Kent and his crew overcame a setback quickly as they lost this morning’s first practice session due to a technical issue before Kent finished the opening day at his home race in P6. On the other side of the team’s garage, Efren Vazquez delivered a solid performance to conclude Friday as eleventh fastest rider of the Moto3 pack, whilst Hiroki Ono first had to check his physical condition before getting to grips with the ultra-long Silverstone Circuit at this very first visit.

Fortunately for teams and riders the weather remains dry for both free practice sessions today even though temperatures were really cool this morning. Series leader Danny Kent endured a dramatic loss this morning because he was forced to sit out the session due to an engine issue. The team decided to miss the session in order to avoid an engine break.

For FP2 this afternoon, Kent’s crew put in a new engine for safety reasons so the five time winner this season was finally able to start his preparations for his home race. At the end of the day Kent was pleased with the work done today even though he lost 40 minutes important practice time compared to his competitors.

Meanwhile Efren Vazquez delivered a solid start into round twelve of this year’s Moto3 world series as he and his crew were focussed on race pace, but the Spaniard’s lap times were good enough for P11 of the combined practice times.

Likewise his team mate Kent, the team’s rookie Hiroki Ono also endured a difficult Friday on an unknown track for him thus far, but mostly due to his physical condition after Ono had to underwent surgery last week to fix a broken fifth metatarsal on his right foot. The Japanese rider sustained this injury last time out in Brno, but reported no problems when riding his Honda machine today.

Moto3 action will continue Saturday morning with the final free practice session before teams and riders set to prepare for the all-important qualifying practice at lunch time.

#7 Efren VAZQUEZ (FP1: P10 - 2´16.352 (14/14) / FP2: P11 - 2´15.519 (14/14)):

“Well, I think it was a productive day for us even though we’re not that fast on a single lap but our rhythm for the race isn’t so bad yet. Though, I’m confident that we’ll get a good pace for Sunday, which of course is the most important thing. On the other side we’ve to wait and see how the weather will be tomorrow and on Sunday, but for the moment the feeling in dry conditions isn’t bad. However, we need to keep working hard and a little bit more in respect of consistent fast lap times, but so far I’m pleased and we’ll see what will happen the remaining weekend.”

#52 Danny KENT (FP1: NC / FP2: P6 - 2´15.199 (13/13)):

“Of course it was start into the weekend I didn’t look for actually. But I can’t say anything else as it’s always difficult if you lose one practice session. We lost FP1 this morning, which made it more difficult for us as the second session was our FP1, so we were one session behind to our competitors. But to conclude this Friday with just 0.7 seconds off the pace isn’t too bad. We still have a few things to work on with the bike tomorrow as we struggle with it to run wide in some places so we know exactly where to catch up time throughout a lap. We can be quite happy with the work we’ve done today even though we need to focus a bit more on the front for tomorrow. But as already mentioned it was difficult day for us because we missed FP1 completely.”

#76 Hiroki ONO (FP1: P30 - 2´19.486 (13/15) / FP2: P29 - 2´17.329 (13/13)):

“Honestly speaking, I’m happy with my physical condition when riding the bike. I feel some pain but it doesn’t affect me aboard my Honda. However, it was a difficult day for us at all. First, I had to understand my condition, in addition to that on a completely new circuit for me. So from this point of view FP1 wasn’t meaningful actually. Anyway, I’m pleased how things went during FP2 this afternoon as we found a better setting for these windy conditions as well as I found better lines throughout a lap at this long track. Of course I still need to understand this circuit much better but in general I’m convinced that we’ll improve also the bike till tomorrow.”


Scare for Zarco at Silverstone

Ajo Motorsport rider leads first practice session but suffers heavy crash in afternoon run, ending his day early.

08/28/2015 - Silverstone Circuit, Great Britain

Moto2 World Championship leader Johann Zarco had a day of extremes on Friday at Silverstone. The Frenchman began the British GP weekend by dominating the first free practice session, but in the afternoon, on his fifth lap, suffered a heavy fall that prevented him from finishing the session. After checks at the Clinica Mobile and Medical Centre, serious injury was ruled out and he has been declared fit for the rest of the weekend. In the combined timesheet for the day, Zarco was ninth.

Johann Zarco debuted a special helmet for this GP in style, topping the first free practice session. He came out strong, leading the way after his opening lap and lowering his time on four consecutive occasions in the first 20 minutes. After his only stop in the pits -without changing tyres- the Ajo Motorsport rider continued his progression, setting the best lap of the entire Moto2 grid just after the chequered flag was shown -2:08.461.

His afternoon concluded prematurely when, in the 14th minute of FP2, he fell at Turn 6. It was his fifth lap, and he was up into second at the time. When the rear of his Kalex stepped out, the series leader was thrown to the ground and suffered a heavy blow to his back. After checkups firstly at the Clinica Mobile and then the Medical Centre, he was given the all-clear to continue riding tomorrow. On the timesheets for the session, Zarco was fifteenth -2:08.899.

Tomorrow the Frenchman will have the opportunity to take his second pole position at Silverstone -after doing so last year- and also continue his pole run from the last round at Brno. Qualifying takes place from 3:05pm.

5 JOHANN ZARCO

"I had a crash at the start of the second practice session, but I am fine and the bike is too. I hope that tomorrow I will not be hurting too much. Nevertheless, this was not a bad day; I was first in the morning and in the afternoon I was also pretty fast. I like the track and the bike had a good balance after the race in the Czech Republic, and that allows me to keep calm and go out and enjoy myself tomorrow. The weather can change, but if it stays dry we will continue with our work to choose the right tyres and prepare for the race in the best way possible."
