Fresh from the Summer break, the Repsol Honda Team head to Indianapolis
After a two-week Summer holiday since the Brno Test, the Repsol Honda Team are en route to the famous Brickyard for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP.
The famous circuit – Home of the Indy 500 – is one of the most famous circuits in motorsport, ‘The Brickyard’ became an official MotoGP venue for the first time in 2008 following some modifications and homologation by the FIM. The layout of the track, which is 4.170km in length and has 16 turns (ten left turns and six rights), incorporates the main straight of the famous oval circuit including the Brickyard and an area between turns 1 and 2 of the oval, before meandering through the vast interior of the IMS.
Since last year’s race, the infield section of the Indianapolis circuit has been resurfaced and there have also been slight changes to the layout. The initial sequence of turns 1 through 4, which previously featured a tight hairpin, has now been redesigned to introduce a more flowing first few turns into a less dramatic turn 4 hairpin. Also the final sector of left-right-left turns (14, 15 and 16) has been changed to soften the extreme changes of direction.
Both Marc and Dani have enjoyed fantastic success here in the past few years, with Marc winning on three occasions – 2011 and 2012 in Moto2, 2013 in MotoGP – and Dani on two occasions – 2010, 2012 – and taking second in 2011 and 2012.

Yamaha Back in Action in Indianapolis

After a four-week summer break Movistar Yamaha MotoGP returns to the USA to kick off the second half of the MotoGP season with the Indianapolis Grand Prix this weekend.
Valentino Rossi enjoyed a successful first half of the season, including some exhilarating battles. The Doctor fought hard with rivals in Qatar, Jerez, Le Mans, Mugello and Catalunya, securing five podiums. Rossi returns recharged from his holiday and intends to maintain his competitive edge for the rest of the year.
Teammate Jorge Lorenzo had a challenging start to the season but kept his head down and gradually returned to form. His season’s highlights have included the thrilling battle in Mugello and his strong races in Argentina and Germany. The summer break has given Lorenzo time to recover both physically and mentally, leaving him ready to give his all the coming nine races.
Thanks to a solid start of the season Rossi has 141 championship points, putting him in third place in the standings, just seven points behind Dani Pedrosa in second. Lorenzo is motivated to continue moving up the leaderboard. He is currently fifth in the championship standings, with a gap of a mere two points to Andrea Dovizioso in fourth.
The recently repaved Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the second American track on the MotoGP calendar. Though the previous surface of this circuit has often been called challenging, both Movistar Yamaha MotoGP riders have enjoyed their share of successes at the 4.170 m long track. Few will have forgotten how Rossi withstood high winds and heavy rain brought on by the remnants of Hurricane Ike to take victory at the first Indianapolis GP in 2008. One year later it was Lorenzo’s turn to claim the win. Over the last six years the Spaniard has been on Indianapolis Motor Speedway podium five times.

“This break was very important, I was able to rest and recharge to start this second part of the season in the best way. The upcoming races will not be easy because we will now arrive at tracks that are difficult for me. Indianapolis is not my favourite track, but they changed the layout and the asphalt a little bit, so we have to see. We hope to be competitive there and to be competitive for all the second part of the season.”

“Back to work! After a very good time relaxing while on holiday I’m now keen to get back on the bike. It’s always important to get some days off to recover physically and mentally, but I’m looking forward to ride in Indy. During this summer break I could rest and keep focused for the second half of the season. There are still nine races left and I want to give my best. I want to fight and ride in my best way to try to win. During the last race in Germany I felt quite comfortable with the bike and I think I can come back in good shape during this part of the year. I’m looking forward to racing in Indy, especially with the new asphalt, to check if it is better for us than in the previous years."

Ducati Team heading to the USA for Indianapolis Grand Prix
After the short summer break, the MotoGP World Championship is back in action in early August for Round 10 at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The second and final appointment on US soil, following the Austin race in April, will mark the start of a tough sequence of events for the MotoGP teams and riders, with three rounds scheduled in four weeks. The race in America will in fact be followed one week later by the Czech Republic GP at Brno, and the British Round at Silverstone at the end of the month.
The Indiana state capital is famous in the world of motorsport for its International Speedway – nicknamed ‘The Brickyard’ – where the Indianapolis 500 Miles race for IndyCars is held every year at the end of May. Since 2008 the massive grandstands have also been the venue for the MotoGP race, which uses some of the banked track combined with a series of slow, twisty corners in the infield section. This year the infield has been resurfaced and some minor modifications have been made to Turns 3, 4, 7, 15 and 16, reducing lap distance to 4.170 km.
Andrea Dovizioso has stepped onto the Indianapolis podium once, with a third place in 2012, while in his three races at Indy, Crutchlow’s best result was fifth place last year.
After the last round in Germany, there has been some important news on the Ducati rider front: Andrea Dovizioso has renewed his contract with the Ducati Team for two more years, while Cal Crutchlow will leave the Italian squad at the end of the season.

“Indianapolis is a bit of a strange track, but this year it has been resurfaced so it will be interesting to see how the bikes go now. It’s a complicated circuit for all riders: I haven’t had much luck here, and I only managed to get onto the podium in 2012. This year it’s difficult to think that we can fight for the podium, but in any case I’m fourth overall in the standings and I’ll continue to fight hard to keep that position.”
Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team #35)
“Indy is a circuit I’m quite looking forward to, and my approach will be the same as always: give my everything to get a good result. Last year I scored a good fifth place after battling with Rossi and Bautista, but this year I think it’s going to be a difficult circuit for the Ducati, with the last four corners cutting back on themselves. We suffered a lot with understeer in Germany so we will have to work hard to improve at Indianapolis.”

The first-ever motorsports event at this circuit dates back to August 14th, 1909, a bike race that was held on a 2.5 km oval, but despite its 100 years of history, MotoGP only arrived here in 2008. Major modifications were made to the infield section of the circuit to accommodate the bikes, but without altering the legendary oval. The track, which now measures 4.170km and contains 16 turns, incorporates within its layout part of the oval, including the famous ‘Brickyard’, the strip of bricks on the finish line that remains from the original surface.

Tech3 duo ready to kick start second half of season at the Brickyard
Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team riders Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith will recommence their 2014 MotoGP World Championship campaigns at the Indianapolis Grand Prix this weekend after the mid point break for the 10thrace of the season.
The second round to be held in America will be undertaken at one of the most significant motorsport tracks on the planet, the Indianapolis circuit in Indiana, which has hosted the MotoGP round since 2008. With ten left corners and six right, the elite circuit also consists of using the renowned Indianapolis 872 metre straight which is part of the famous oval race track. Modifications have been made ahead of the MotoGP carnival’s visit for the 27 lap sprint, which includes new asphalt on the infield section of the track as well as increasing the angles of turns 2-4, 7-9 and 15-16 to improve the safety and enhance overtaking opportunities for the racing spectacle on Sunday.
Rookie Pol Espargaro will intend to build on his noticeable start to the first half of the season, which saw him finish in 7th in the world championship standings before the break and continue to bridge the gap to the leading MotoGP bikes. On the other side of the garage, Britain’s Bradley Smith will confidently aim to turn a somewhat tricky opening half of the season around and battle for a competitive and confidence boosting result this weekend.
"With the first half of the season completed, there was time to analyse how I had performed so far this year, but now after the summer break I already can't wait to get back on track to continue to climb higher. My performance in the opening 9 rounds was generally positive even if luck wasn't on our side especially during the last couple of races and I hope we can show our real potential here in Indianapolis, which will see us closer to the front as I know I have more to offer. As for the Indy track itself, it is a really famous one that I am really proud to ride along with the other riders due to its rich, amazing history. There have been some revisions to the circuit which will be positive for everyone but especially for me as I have ridden well here in the past. I won my first race in the 125cc class in 2009 as well as claiming my first podium in Moto2 in 2011, so this track will always have a special place in my heart which inspires me to really go for it this weekend as well as for the rest of the year."
"After an enjoyable summer break where I was able to fully recharge my batteries, I am ready for action this weekend at Indy and am determined to get a really strong result for myself as well as the Monster Yamaha Tech3 team to get us back on target in the championship. It’s easy to see that it has been tricky for me so far this year. Yet, my finger injury has cleared plus I am highly motivated to try my hardest to clinch a position inside the top 5 this weekend, which is where I know I need to be every race. It will be interesting to see how the modifications of the circuit affect the pace and the overtaking opportunities but for sure the changes will be positive. Now, it’s up to me. "Now that the summer break is over, it’s time to get back to the racing and show the GP paddock what we can do. I am surethat both Pol and Brad have refreshed themselves and are now ready to carry on doing their best. At the just beyond the half way point of the season we know where we are at and I still think that we have not yet shown our true potential. Pol had a good run in the opening 9 rounds, although he also had some ill luck,but with every turn of the wheel of his Yamaha YZR-M1 he is gaining experience. His progress has been very good, so now we hope he can carry on pushing and closing in on the factory bikes. As for Brad, who has been unlucky as well, it’s time for him to get back on the bike and go for it. The break will have done him good so we know he will have a strong second half of the season and get back into the top 5 which is where he is aiming for,plusneeds to be. Therefore both riders have been down on luck at times and there is a margin to improve, but a strong second half of the year should be in front of us starting this weekend. It is great to come back here every year and Indy is a race that we all look forward to. It’s simply fantastic for the GP bikes to be running on the brickyard straight which is part of the world famous oval circuit, so this weekend we will be back and ready to go for glory once again."
BRADL EAGER TO CHALLENGE HIS COLLEAGUES AT THE MODIFIED INDIANAPOLIS CIRCUIT
Indianapolis, 7 August: the 2014 MotoGP World Championship returns to action this weekend after the summer break at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway venue which has been modified since the last visit. The layout has been redesigned to create a 16-turn, 2.591-mile (4.170-kilometre) circuit with exciting new turn configurations and braking zones, creating more passing opportunities. LCR Honda racer Stefan Bradl is anxious to make amends from the last tough races (especially German GP) and move up again from ninth overall.
Stefan: “The summer break gave me the chance to relax and to train to face the second half of the season with more energy and motivation. My season so far was up-and-down but I want to begin the second part of the championship in a different mood trying to forget some unlucky and tough weekends like Germany. Indianapolis is a special venue for all MotoGP riders as the circuit is an iconic one. I had good races here in the premier class but now the track has been modified so it will be important to take some time with my team to examine these changes and be prepared for the race”.
DRIVE M7 Aspar Team with new-look line-up for Indy
Leon Camier to join Spanish team in place of Nicky Hayden for next two rounds
After a three-week summer break the MotoGP World Championship resumes this weekend with the second half of the season getting underway at Indianapolis. The tenth round of the campaign takes place at the legendary American circuit, which has been resurfaced and slightly remodelled since last year, with Marc Márquez looking to extend his incredible record-breaking unbeaten run in this year's championship.
DRIVE M7 Aspar rider Nicky Hayden misses his home race as a result of the recent operation on his right wrist, which will also force him to miss the next round in the Czech Republic, although he will travel to Indianapolis to support the team and spend time with his fans. Nicky's replacement will be British rider Leon Camier, an experienced campaigner from World Superbikes who will be making his MotoGP debut on his first ever visit to the Indy circuit. Whilst the goal for Camier is to learn and adapt as quickly as possible his new team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama returns from a summer holiday in his native Japan looking to continue his recent good results in his 160th Grand Prix appearance.
Nicky Hayden: “Well I don't like the thought of this weekend being the Indy MotoGP race knowing I'll be watching and not out there on my bike representing in my home race, but this is the situation. Truthfully I have already dealt with it and I'm only thinking about my recovery so no pity party for me. Of course I will still be in Indy for the complete event – I love everything they do in Indy to make it such a cool weekend, there really is something for everybody to do there so I look forward to seeing it all and meeting up with the fans. I seem to be healing on course but it was no small surgery so I'm not sure when I'll be back and probably won't know until after my next doctor check up. Until then good luck to Leon - of course it won't be the easiest situation but I am happy the team was able to find such a experienced rider with his credibility to hold the fort until I get back.”
Hiroshi Aoyama: “I made the most of the summer break to head back to Japan and spend a few days with family and friends. I have topped up on energy and motivation for the second half of the season. Indianapolis is a unique circuit with its own peculiarities but they have made some changes for this year so I am looking forward to getting there and having a look at what they have done. It is a strange track but I like it and in general I like racing in American because of the atmosphere, the culture and the fans. We finished the first half of the season well so the aim is to kick off the second half with another strong result.”
Leon Camier: “I am excited to have the chance to ride a MotoGP bike with the DRIVE M7 Aspar Team. It will be a tough weekend, with a lot of learning to do because everything will be new to me – the bike, the tyres... I am going to have to adapt to a lot of things in a short space of time. This is a wonderful opportunity for me though, with a very experienced team and I am sure it will be an interesting weekend. I am looking forward to getting out on track at Indianapolis and learning the track as quickly as possible, starting with some laps on the scooter on Thursday. We're not going to start targeting results just now, I think the most important thing is to learn and to adapt.”
NGM Forward Racing returns to the USA for the Indianapolis GP
The NGM Forward Racing Team heads back across the Atlantic to the USA for the second American round on the calendar, the Indianapolis Grand Prix.
Relaxed after a nice summer break, the NGM Forward Racing riders are ready to tackle the second part of the season, starting from the US track that hosts a GP since 2008.
Constructed in 1909, the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway will welcome the MotoGP circus with a complete new asphalt and some important modifications to 7 corners to make the layout even more interesting. For the riders, the first free practices will be very important to understand how the circuit has changed in order to work on the set up of their machines for the race.
“Indianapolis is a very special place with a lot of history behind. My family and friends will be there and I’m sure it will be an emotional weekend. I’m curious to see how the new surface is, as there used to be 4 different kinds of tarmacs. Also the layout has changed, so it will be very interesting. I really look forward to Indy”.
“We are heading to the USA after the summer break. I was able to rest after Sachsenring, spending a week at the seaside before returning on my usual training schedule. BAUTISTA AND REDDING RESUME ACTION AT WORLD FAMOUS INDIANAPOLIS
Team GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista and Scott Redding head this weekend to the United States to take part in the Indianapolis Grand Prix: the second round of the season on American soil marks the beginning of the second half of the Championship after three weeks of summer break and it will be hosted on a revised track. Some of the tighter corners - turns 2-4, turns 7-9 and turns 15-16 - has in fact been opened up with the aim of improving rider safety, as well as the quality of racing at this famous venue; in addition, the track has been resurfaced.
Engaged last year in a good battle with Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow, Bautista arrives at a venue where he has always collected good results since his MotoGP debut, back in 2010. The historic Speedway is therefore a good opportunity for the Spaniard, looking for a better consistency after the good things shown at the beginning of the season and the beautiful podium finish obtained at Le Mans.
Seven consecutive points scoring finishes allowed his teammate, Scott Redding, to close the first half of the season in the first position among the riders aboard the Open Class Honda RCV1000R, with 34 points: the goal of the English rookie in Indianapolis is to confirm himself as the fastest rider among the others with the same technical package, in order to strengthen his position in the standings.
ALVARO BAUTISTA “Indianapolis is a very strange track, but this year we are going to race on a revised layout: the design of some corners which actually were not very suitable for bike racing has been modified and the track has been re-surfaced. So I think that first of all it will be important to verify how the tyres work on the new surface. Anyway, I’ve always had good results in Indy, so our goal is to try to find immediately a good set-up in order to achieve a good feeling with the bike and be able to give our best. Finally we resume action after the summer break and I hope to show a better consistency in this second part of the championship”.
SCOTT REDDING “This year they changed a little bit the track so it will be interesting to see how it goes, but anyway with that long straight going into the first fast corner it should be exciting to race there aboard a MotoGP bike! I also like going to the United States because the fans really like to show their support and they are an inspiration for us. Starting the second half of the season with an advantage over the rest of the other production Honda riders in the championship standings is good, but now we need to continue like this. The summer break has been helpful to take a bit of rest and to get even stronger for the second half of the season. We expect high temperatures for this race so I did a lot of training and now I feel I’m prepared”.
FAUSTO GRESINI “It’s nice to be back on track, and it’s nice to do it in a fascinating venue like Indianapolis; last year Alvaro had a good race, fighting with determination. We have good memories there, so we hope to live a nice weekend. We also hope that the second half of the season can give us some more satisfactory results, because at the beginning of the championship we have already proved that we can get it; above all, I am confident that the team can find the right path to allow Alvaro to maintain a more consistent performance. The first part of Redding’s debut season in the top class has been positive: at this moment, Scott is the best placed production Honda rider in the standings, therefore so far we reached our goal; now we have to continue like this”.
2014 RED BULL INDIANAPOLIS GP STORYLINES
INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 - Motorcycles descend on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week as the Red Bull Indianapolis GP returns for a seventh year with a full slate of racing from Aug. 8-10.
Indianapolis is the 10th round in the 2014 MotoGP World Championship and marks the start of the second half of the season. MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 classes will take the track all three days along with the AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series.
The following is a list of storylines for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP:
• The MotoGP World Championship returns to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on a reconfigured road course. The new course is slightly shorter at 2.591 miles (4.170 km) but retains its 16-turn layout, with turns 3, 4, 7, 15 and 16 having been reconfigured and the entire infield section of the circuit having been repaved.
• Reigning world champion Marc Marquez has won three years in a row at IMS - in Moto2 in 2011-12 and MotoGP last year. At the midway point of this season the Spaniard leads the points with a perfect record, having won all nine MotoGP races. Another win on Sunday would continue his streak and tie Australian legend Mick Doohan for the most consecutive wins (10) in a season in the modern era. Marquez, 21, won the title last year as a rookie - the first rookie champion since Kenny Roberts in 1978.
• Texas native Colin Edwards is retiring at season's end and will make his last U.S. MotoGP start at Indianapolis. His best finish at IMS is a fifth in 2009. A "Farewell to the Texas Tornado" live event featuring several MotoGP stars will take place on the Moto Midway stage in the IMS infield at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
• Spain's Dani Pedrosa, Marquez's teammate with Repsol Honda, is second in the standings and has great history at Indy with wins in 2010 and 2012.
• Italian legend Valentino Rossi, a nine-time world champion and winner of the inaugural MotoGP in Indy in 2008, sits third in points and has runner-up finishes in four of nine starts.
• Jeremy McWilliams, a former MotoGP rider, returns to chase another win in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Series. He won the first of two 10-lap races at IMS last year by 0.039 of a second and will ride again this year for Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, Ind.
• The AMA Pro Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson series features specially modified Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles and will stage 10-lap races on Saturday and Sunday. The series began during Red Bull Indianapolis GP week in 2011, marking the return of Harley-Davidsons to IMS for the first time since 1909 when the world-famous facility first hosted a motorcycle event.
• In Moto2, Esteve Rabat of Spain returns to defend his title and extend his points lead. Fellow countryman Alex Rins won Moto3 last season at IMS but is still looking for his first win in 2014.
• American Josh Herrin (Glendale, Calif.) will compete in Moto2 for AirAsia Caterham Moto Racing. The 24-year-old will make his eighth start of the season, having missed a race in late April after breaking his collarbone.
• Owensboro, Ky., native Nicky Hayden will not be riding in MotoGP due to recovery from wrist surgery but will be at IMS throughout the weekend to support his replacement and teammate, Britain's Leon Camier, and take part in a number of off-track activities.
• Off-track action on the Moto Midway and the Vendor Marketplace sponsored by Westfield Powersports will include concerts, XDL Street Jam, Red Bull Trials stunt performances by 10-time champion Geoff Aaron, shopping and interactive fun.
• Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts will hit the streets of downtown Indianapolis after the gates close at IMS on Friday and Saturday nights for "Motorcycles on Meridian," a free event celebrating motorcycle culture.
• The Red Bull Indianapolis GP will be the second event at IMS since the addition of a new scoring pylon. The third-generation pylon, residing on the main straightaway just south of the entrance to Gasoline Alley, features full LED panels on all four sides providing improved messaging capabilities including animation and video.

Round ten of the 2014 season sees MotoGP™ return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway although this year, the home of American motorsport unveils a new layout to kick-off the second half of the championship.
The revised Indianapolis MotoGP course is 4.170 kilometres in length and features a re-surfaced infield section which should yield more consistent grip levels for the riders. Three sections of the track has had modifications made to the layout; turns 2-4, turns 7-9 and turns 15-16. The overall effect is that some of the tighter corners have been opened up with the aim of improving rider safety, as well as the quality of racing at this famous venue. Indianapolis is one of the few circuits on the calendar that is run in a counter-clockwise direction, and features ten left-hand turns compared to six right-hand turns so asymmetric rear slicks with harder rubber on the left shoulder are supplied here.
The Indianapolis circuit is quite severe on rear tyres and in particular, the section of left-handers through turns twelve to fourteen generates very high rear tyre temperatures. The circuit features a ‘stop-and-go’ layout with slow corners separated by short straight sections which place an emphasis on good rear traction and braking stability.
Rear slick options for the Factory Honda and Yamaha riders are the medium and hard compound, while the Ducati and Open-class riders are allocated the soft and medium compound rear slicks. Front slick compounds for all riders at Indianapolis are the soft, medium and hard compounds. The main wet tyre for Indianapolis is the soft compound, although every rider will be able to also select up to two front and rear wet tyres in the alternative, hard compound option.

“After a four week break from racing, there is no better place to get the second half of the MotoGP season started than Indianapolis; a venue steeped in history, in a city that holds motorsport very close to its heart. There is always a great atmosphere throughout the whole of Indianapolis when MotoGP comes to town and it’s always a pleasure visiting here. The circuit has been re-surfaced and the layout has changed slightly and this will hopefully make things easier for riders at what is a tight, but technical circuit. Indianapolis is also the venue for our annual Bridgestone Golf Performance Challenge and I once again look forward to welcoming the riders and media attending this event, which is an enjoyable way to get back into the swing of the Grand Prix season.”

“A recent re-surfacing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway means that there’s only a single type of tarmac on the infield section, whereas in previous years there were a few different types of tarmac which caused variable grip levels for riders. The circuit has also had some corners modified for this year, but overall the circuit still retains its usual character with many low-speed corners. The layout of the circuit puts greater stress on the left shoulder of the tyres and the run from turns twelve to fourteen generates very high temperatures on the left shoulder of the rear tyre. To ensure adequate temperature resistance and durability, we supply asymmetric rear slicks with harder rubber on the left shoulder at this circuit. The front slick compounds for Indianapolis are from the harder end of our compound range for maximum durability and braking stability at what is a ‘stop-and-go’ circuit.”
