Excellent start for Red Bull KTM Ajo at Jerez

Jack Miller takes fastest time at Spanish track, with Karel Hanika eighth quickest

Following swiftly on from last week's testing activities, Red Bull KTM Ajo were back in action this Tuesday for a third consecutive week of preseason testing. Jerez was the venue, and Jack Miller and Karel Hanika were in good form on Day 1. Miller took the fastest time of the day onboard his KTM, with Hanika eighth on the combined timesheet.

The track was in mixed condition, with a half-wet, half-dry surface. That meant that the Red Bull KTM Ajo riders missed out on the opening three hours of testing, undergoing only a few laps in order to regain their feel for their bikes. In the second session of the day, Miller and Hanika were able to get down to business, developing the setups for their KTM machines with every lap. The Australian took the fourth best lap —1:48.115—, whilst his rookie teammate clocked a 1:49.388 which gave him twelfth.

Both riders improved their times dramatically in the afternoon session. Miller headed the timesheet in the early going, and was able further lower his best lap to take a final 1:46.975 —making him the fastest man on Tuesday. Hanika, meanwhile, took over a second off his best time, to finish eighth with a 1:47.960 —putting him inside the Top 10.

This second official test for Moto2 and Moto3 continues tomorrow and Thursday at Jerez.

"We definitely can improve a lot more. We have many little points that we can make better, but overall it was a very, very good day today. I'm really happy with how the bike is working and with how we set up the bike today. For tomorrow I just need to be a little bit more consistent; I'm putting in some good laps, but it's still not perfect and we can still improve a lot. We are going to have a lot more stuff to test tomorrow, but consistency is my main goal and I won't be going out too aggressively.

Sometimes I was a little overaggressive today and made mistakes as a result. I want to get my lap times down, and we need to keep positive and keep working in the same way as at Valencia. We've been doing a really good job so far."

Karel Hanika

"Today we did a really good job. We didn't put in a lot of laps but finally I think we found a good setup. Obviously we still need to work a lot tomorrow and over the rest of the days remaining in preseason. Today the weather was not very good but I think that if tomorrow it's better we can improve. I'm happy with how today went. I think that my wrist is not really a big problem now, and it was just in the last hour that it was a little bit tired. In any case, it is in much better shape than in Valencia. In a few days it'll be 100% ready."


Husqvarna riders start Jerez test with strong showing

First Almeria, then Valencia and now Jerez; three circuits in as many weeks have hosted the lower cylinder category of the World Championship. Although they were forced to sit out most of the opening session of the day due to the mixed track conditions, Husqvarna riders Danny Kent and Niklas Ajo had a good opening day at the Spanish circuit, ending the day with the third fastest time -Kent, after 51 laps- and fifteenth best -Ajo, after 31 laps-, respectively.

Danny Kent was one of the few riders to go out at the end of the opening session, undertaking four laps to regain his feel for the Husqvarna machine. In the second runout, the Red Bull Husqvarna Ajo man began to try out some new setups. His 1:49.527 from that session was eclipsed in the final outing, in which he went 2 seconds faster with a 1:47.471 on his last attempt. That placed him third on the combined timesheet.

Niklas Ajo waited until the final all-Moto3 session to begin his work, and was strong from the opening minute. Feeling better than last week, the Avant Tecno Husqvarna Ajo rider was ninth quickest, with a time of 1:49.039. After an additional 14 laps in the final session, the Finn stopped the clock on 1:48.674.

The Jerez test continues tomorrow, with the second of three days of action at the Spanish track.

"The last session was really good; we made a big improvement in that run. At the beginning of the day we had a few problems but finally we made some changes and in the end the feeling was really good, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow. We have to try to improve tomorrow from when where left off today. So far things are going quite well and I really improved my lap times from what I did here last year. I hope the weather is good over the next two days, as today we lost quite a lot track time in the morning. It was only really in this last session where I got a really good feeling with the bike. We still have a lot of work to do, but the good thing is that I can still improve by myself."

Niklas Ajo

"Everything seems to be alright. We made some changes to the setup for this track, and now it’s like a new start for me because I changed my riding style quite a lot. Now it looks like it’s getting better all the time. After that we had to change the bike considerably, because when you change your riding style the bike must also be set up differently. Now we are trying to look for the right setting to get our speed up and it looks like we found quite a good pace in the end. We stopped a little bit early and saved some tyres for the next few days; the lap time doesn’t matter so much. We were working consistently and continually improving. The changes we made were just with the setup, and as the weather is much better here we have more confidence than at Valencia. Here it's easier to ride and feel at ease."


XAVIER SIMEON GET BACK TO BUSINESS ON THE FIRST DAY OF TESTING AT JEREZ

After being forced to miss the first two pre-season tests of 2014 at Almeria and Valencia, Xavier Siméon was back on track today for the first of three days of testing scheduled at the Jerez circuit: the Belgian rider, who suffered a deep wound to his chin in the crash of last February 6th at Almeria, was back in the saddle of his Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 Suter machine, concentrating today to pick up the rhythm.

Despite damp track conditions in the morning, due to overnight rain, Xavier managed to collect 74 laps at the end of the day, setting a lap time of 1’44”226, being the 13th of 33 riders on track.

On the other side of the garage, rookie Lorenzo Baldassarri continued his apprenticeship aboard the Team Gresini Moto2 Suter machine, starting from the good base found last week in Valencia. The 17-year-old Italian, who had already rode a Moto2 bike on the Jerez circuit last November, has been able to see first hand the progress made in the last few weeks, signing at the end of the day a positive 1’44”912.

Testing will resume tomorrow for the second of three days scheduled at the Andalusian track.

XAVIER SIMEON (1'44"226 - 74 LAPS)

“Being back on the track it’s been a bit strange, initially: first of all, I wanted to avoid mistakes, as happened in Almeria, so I approached this first day of testing progressing step by step. All in all I am satisfied with the lap time we obtained today, considering that this it’s been my first real test since last November, but of course we want to improve a lot tomorrow. Physically I feel pretty good, definitely better than expected: until yesterday, in fact, my neck was hurting a lot, but today it was ok. The injuries to the chin and teeth don’t give me any trouble while I'm riding”.

LORENZO BALDASSARRI (1'44"912 - 62 LAPS)

“Today was not bad at all! I’m only disappointed for the final part of the day: I wanted to improve my lap time because I was feeling really good with my bike, but unfortunately I couldn’t do it because of the traffic. Aside from that, I'm satisfied about today’s outcome: I had already tried the Moto2 here at the Jerez circuit last November and thanks to the tests carried out in the past few weeks today I noticed several improvements in my riding style. Tomorrow I will continue to work with the team, but I'd like to keep a bit of energy for the third and final day of testing, in which we would like to try a race simulation”.

FAUSTO GRESINI

"I'm glad that Simeon is back on track after the injuries he suffered at Almeria: Xavier today has finally made ​​its first real test of 2014 and I'm pleased with how it went, considering that it is still not yet at his full strength. A good start that was needed. Baldassari needs to do a lot of miles: riding a Moto2, stepping up from Moto3, is not easy, but Lorenzo is working well to better understand the behavior of this bike and to gain the right experience to make a qualitative leap ahead of the first races. Tomorrow we will be back on track to continue working in this direction, without hurry”.


Alex Marquez and Fabio Quartararo continue preseason testing

Good feeling on opening day of Jerez test, for which Fabio Quartararo steps in for the recovering Alex Rins.

Alex Marquez and Fabio Quartararo were out on track today in the opening day of testing at the Circuito de Jerez. The latter CEV Repsol champion in 2013 in the Moto3 class is standing in over the three-day test for Alex Rins, after the Spaniard underwent wrist surgery yesterday in Barcelona. Tuesday was Quartararo's first day onboard Rins' Honda NSF250RW, and both he and Marquez made consistent progress with their setups. Marquez and Quartararo finally finished tenth and eleventh, respectively, on the combined timesheets.

The third test of the preseason and the second official outing after last week's visit to Valencia, began late due to heavy rainfall overnight. The asphalt on the track was not fully dry until just past 1pm, but when conditions allowed, Marquez undertook 44 laps and set a best time of 1:48.286. Quartararo completed 48 laps of the Andalusian track and, despite only being 14 years old, took a meritable eleventh place on the timesheets with his 1:48.232 best time. The fastest man of the day was Jack Miller.

The second of the three days of testing at Jerez takes place tomorrow.

Alex Marquez - 1:48.186, 44 laps, 195 km.

"We have started this test fairly well, because from the start I felt more comfortable than last week in Valencia. I prefer this track, with its fast corners, and I felt more comfortable with the Honda. This circuit favours our chassis and this is one of the strong points that we have to try to make even better, because we still have plenty of room for improvement. I'm not having much trouble with my shoulder, but I am feeling rather tired, because after three days last week I have some accumulated fatigue still."

Fabio Quartararo - 1:48.232, 48 laps, 212 km.

"I am happy with how this first day went. In testing with World Championship riders you can see that the level is very high, right from the start. It was a pity that the track was so wet in the morning, because we weren't able to ride much. However, we went out later and it went well, although I think I can improve a lot. I found it tough at the start, but adapted quickly because I like the track ‒it's one of the best in Spain."


Hafiq Azmi begins new challenge at Jerez

SIC-Ajo rider takes 28th fastest time in second Moto3 official test, held at Jerez.

Last week, Hafiq Azmi adapted quickly to the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia. This Tuesday he started again from zero at Jerez, the scene of three days of testing in the Moto3 class. Hafiq Azmi continues to improve with every day spent onboard his bike, and today placed 28th with a time of 1:50.245.

However, his day's work began a little later than planned, after overnight rain left the track wet. The SIC-Ajo rider decided not to take a risk and waited until the final all-Moto3 session to get out on track. In the opening hour, he put in 10 laps, the fastest of which was a 1:51.845. After solving a small problem with his setup, Hafiq Azmi smashed his best time in the final session, cutting more than a second off his previous quickest lap.

On Wednesday, Hafiq Azmi will be back on his bike for a second day of testing. The Jerez circuit will also play host to round four of the Moto3 World Championship in 2014.

"In the morning I didn’t feel really good, because it wasn't easy to shift down gears; sometimes I would try to shift down to first gear and sometimes it went into neutral, sometimes into second. We needed to solve this problem, because it wasn't easy to keep the bike going straight. In the afternoon the issue was a little better, but I'm not completely happy. I had another gearing issue when I shifted down under braking and the bike was shaking. I was hitting the brakes earlier than last year, but I have never had this problem before. I just hope that it is better tomorrow, so I can try to get a faster time than I did in 2013."


68 laps for Krummenacher in first day of test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, February 18, 2014 - The first day of the official Moto2 class test at Jerez de la Frontera has ended positively for the Iodaracing Team.

Randy Krummenacher, back from a first session last week in Valencia, approached in the right way these tests , remaining on track as much as possible with his Suter . The Swiss Moto2 rider has made 68 laps, managing to score his best times in the last sessions .

A major step forward for Krummenacher has yet to resume the automatic track after the incident last year at Silverstone.

At the end of the first day of testing , Krummenacher is 22 ° in the combined list of the times of Moto2, with 1.44.596 , delayed by Esteve Rabat ( Kalex ) of 1.849 s.

RANDY KRUMMENACHER - MOTO2 RIDER - " This first day at Jerez was better than the first in Valencia last week. I’m starting to regain confidence with speed and are also more focused on work to be done on the bike . With the team I have yet maximum understanding and this helps me a lot.. After the accident of last season, the thing that I can do is just ride as much as possible. Another aspect of this first day that makes me confident, is that I fell less tired than before and this is a good signal. We have to continue like this”.


STRONG START FOR ANTONELLI IN PRE-SEASON TESTING AT JEREZ

After the excellent results obtained at Almeria and Valencia, the pre-season testing resumed today at the Jerez Circuit for the Junior Team GO&FUN Moto3: Niccolò Antonelli was once again among the fastest riders, scoring the fourth best time in the first of three days of testing scheduled on the Spanish track.

After overnight rain, the morning session commenced with the track still damp, but in the afternoon the track conditions have improved and the Italian was able to work with his team, focusing primarily on adjusting the engine brake system: "Nicco" completed 52 laps, the best in 1’47”654.

After being the fastest “rookie” last week in Valencia, today Enea Bastianini suffered a crash at the beginning of the afternoon session, after only 11 laps. As a result of this fall, Enea reported a cut in his right hand after which he was forced to stop testing. However, Enea will be back on track tomorrow for the second day of testing.

NICCOLO' ANTONELLI (1'47"654 - 52 LAPS)

“We are competitive also here in Jerez, as a further confirmation that I'm feeling good with this bike. Unfortunately we lost almost all the morning session due to wet track conditions, but in the afternoon we did a really good job, especially focusing on the engine brake management, which we would like to improve a little. Today Miller was really fast and we are all very close, therefore we want to make a further step ahead tomorrow, trying to increase even more my feeling with the bike”.

ENEA BASTIANINI (1'51"109 - 11 LAPS)

"Unfortunately, I lost all the first day of testing: in the morning the track was still wet, while in the afternoon session I crashed immediately during the first lap: I went wide at turn 12 and the bike launched me with a 'highside'. Anyway I'm fine, although I've got a wound on my right hand which required two stitches. I can say that I already got my first 2 World Championship points! Seriously, tomorrow will be back on track to continue the test, hoping that the hand won’t give me too much bother”.

FAUSTO GRESINI

"It's been a first day with some positive things, and others negative. On the one hand I am happy with Niccolò’s approach: he worked quietly and always among the fastest, proving once again to be very competitive. On the other hand, I’m very disappointed for what happened to Enea: unfortunately he made a mistake that forced him to throw away an entire day of testing. He has already racked up two points on a hand, maybe he was envious of those taken by Simeon in Moto2... Joking aside, Bastianini is still very young, so such incidents can happen, but he needs to learn quickly to avoid this kind of mistakes. These three days of testing are very important, so it’s crucial to measure out the vehemence: the races are yet to start”.


Positive start of Jerez test

The first of three days of testing in Jerez was a good one for RW Racing GP. Only 0,007 separated Scott Deroue and Ana Carrasco, with the rookie taking the advantage over the lady. But actually that wasn’t very important. More important was the fact that both riders ran high quality laps in good conditions and learned a lot from that.

Like most of the teams RW Racing GP only started riding in the afternoon. Wet patches on the track hindered the riders in the morning. The team decided not to go out on rain tyres, but to wait until the circumstances were good enough to go out on slicks.

In the three sessions for Moto3 Ana Carrasco ran 59 laps and Scott Deroue 45. Both set their best lap times in the final session, making it to 20 and 21 overall. Deroue managed to pick up a good slipstream and fought his way to a fast lap time, just a little faster than his team mate.

“One of Scott’s qualities is that he is a pure racer, who is at his best in the middle of the action”, RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen explained. “He likes to enter into the fray and he is not shy in doing so. When he is fighting for his place in a group, he gets just that bit extra allowing him to go faster. I’m not saying it was a lucky shot, but there was a bit of luck involved. On the other hand: now that Scott knows he can do it, he might do it again on his own. It’s good to get such a confirmation on a first day.”

Of course Ana Carrasco wasn’t overjoyed seeing her rookie team mate higher ranked, but she couldn’t really be bothered. “Ana was faster all the time except for this one lap”, Janssen says. “She is not the type of rider to go a second faster all of a sudden. Ana is a bit more reserved, but she is very consistent. In doing so she finds some improvement in every lap, building it up bit by bit.”
