Melandri and Laverty take on top in turns at Monza
Monza, Sunday 12 May 2013 – Round 4 of eni FIM Superbike World Championship drew to its highest point today with two incredible races, won by Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad GoldBet) and Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) respectively. Of the 47,046 overall spectators attending during the three days, the ones who went for the Sunday trip to Monza’s Autodromo Nazionale enjoyed an amazing show of talent, close and unpredictable racing until the finish line.
Protagonists of the round were also Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team), who raced up front to create with the two winners of today a breathtaking 4-way battle for the victory in both races.
Marco Melandri was the winner of a thrilling and ultra-close first race, following a spectacular and highly entertained battle throughout the 18 laps.
The 11th race win for the home rider - his maiden on the Italian track - was a perfect display of racecraft, as Melandri entered the final lap in 3rd position and immediately overtook Tom Sykes at Turn 1, then made a successful move on Eugene Laverty for the lead. The works Aprilia Rider regained first position at the "Ascari" chicane, but the eventual winner was not happy with second place and got along the inside of the Irishman at the last turn, while Sykes tried to take advantage to snatch the victory from both rivals.
The three riders crossed the line side by side, with Melandri winning by 0.085 seconds over Tom Sykes and by 0.107 seconds on Eugene Laverty. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) was part of the contention for the win but lost ground in the closing stages to finish 4th.
Marco Melandri: “It was an unbelievable day for me. To finish first and second here in Monza is just awesome and it feels great after we had a difficult start to the season. Race one was unbelievable. I knew that my race pace was quite good, even if we struggled a bit in qualifying. Until the chequered flag, I was talking to my RR, telling her ‘go, go, go’ – that was incredible. In Race 2 hen Sylvain made a little mistake, I passed him and then tried to catch Eugene, but he was a bit too far away. Anyway, I was also very happy with second place. Now I am confident because I feel that the feeling with the bike is coming back."
5th place for Chaz Davies (BMW Motorrad GoldBet), ahead of Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) - who made his way up to sixth position following a difficult start - and Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team).
Race 1 saw a new average speed record for the Superbike World Championship (201,814 km/h): the previous one was set in 2000 at Hockenheim (Race 1 - 201,330 km/h).

Eugene Laverty has taken revenge over Marco Melandri after first race defeat for the win to achieve a crucial victory in Race 2. The Irishman grabbed the lead on the penultimate lap and defended the position from a competitive Melandri, who set the fastest lap of the race right before the chequered flag in 1'42.379.
With his 3rd race win of 2013, Laverty equals the same number of victories achieved in the past two seasons to close the gap on the Championship leader Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) to 13 points, with Tom Sykes third with an 18 points gap from the top.
Eugene Laverty: “This was a great day for me. After the podium in Race 1 it was nice to end the weekend with a victory. Especially since I was a bit disappointed because I had a shot at the top step of the podium in the first race as well if I had managed the end differently. The points situation is excellent if you consider the double DNF in Aragon, but I've already left those difficulties behind and I count on doing well at the next round at Donington as well."
The Kawasaki Racing Team rider completed the podium ahead of Guintoli, as both riders were part of a 4-way battle that characterised most of the 18-lap race.
Their race result is still provisional, as after the chequered flag the Aprilia Racing Team requested the Race Direction to analyse last Tom Sykes’ lap, who ran off track, while entering Turn 5 - using the run off area - and rejoined by maintaining his 3rd position and same pace. The appeal by Aprilia was upheld and after Sykes was penalised with one position place penalty, the Kawasaki Racing Team appealed to the FIM Stewards' Panel. Following an analysis of race footage and sector times by Sykes, preceding rider Melandri and following rider Guintoli, decided to reinstate Tom Sykes third in classification. Therefore, this could not be the final verdict, as a further appeal could be lodged by the works Aprilia Team, this time to the International Disciplinary Court (within 5 days), that will eventually take the final decision on it.
5th place for Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Roma Aprilia), after a close battle with Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Aprilia). Both riders had to face a strong Chaz Davies, up until the Welshman lost the front at Turn 5 during lap 12, and a fierce Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki), 7th at the flag.

World Supersport - Heroic win by Sam Lowes
Sam Lowes (Yakhnich Motorsport Yamaha) did an almost impossible overtaking manoeuvre on the last lap of World Supersport race to get his 2nd win of the season and become the new Championship leader. The 23 year old from Lincoln had a fantastic drive out of Turn 4 to pass all three riders ahead of him at the following chicane.
Lowes got quickly a small margin on the chasing pack to cross the line in 1st place ahead of Florian Marino (Intermoto Ponyexpres Kawasaki), Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport) and Riccardo Russo (Puccetti Racing Kawasaki). The top-5 in today's race, completed by Kev Coghlan (DMC-Racing Kawasaki) put up an outstanding battle throughout all 10 laps.
Reigning Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki) lost the front at Turn 8 during the 4th lap of the race, while he was on the lead. Team mate Fabien Foret didn't take part to the race after being involved in the multiple crash at Turn 1 that brought to a third red flag - and eventually led to the decision of postponing the Supersport race after World Superbike race 2. Similar misfortune for rookie Michael van Der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport).

Lorenzo Savadori won today's FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race, that was reduced to 7 laps following the crash by Greg Gildenhuys (BMW Motorrad GoldBet) and the collision between team mate Sylvain Barrier and Argentinean Leandro Mercado (Team Pedercini) on the opening lap after the first start. Savadori showed again the affinity with his home track, getting a small margin in the last two laps over the fierce followers to secure a crucial victory after his difficult start of the season.
The race saw at times a 7-way battle up front, but the challenge for the two remaining podium places was a matter between Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Racing Kawasaki) and Niccolò Canepa (Barni Racing Team Ducati) on the last lap. The 2007 Champion had a successful overtaking at the last turn, but the Frenchman managed to regain the position before the finish line.
4th place for Eddi La Marra (Barni Racing Team Ducati) - who got the holeshot at the restart and was leader at some point during the race - followed by wild-card Michele Magnoni (G.M. Racing BMW) and Matthieu Lussiana (Team Aspi Kawasaki).

European Junior Cup
The PATA European Junior Cup powered by Honda was a fiercely contested affair with ten riders in with a shout of the victory on the final lap at Monza race, that was won by French Robin Anne (Anne Formation) ahead of Adrien Pittet (Swisscare) and Zac Levy (Puma R.V.s) . From the start, the action was unpredictable as several riders fell at Turn 1. Pole sitter Guillaume Raymond (Activebike) was a little too keen to get going, as was Ilya Mikhalchyk (Wind Racing Team) and Richard Bodis (Sparta Motorsport) who all received a jump start penalty.
Augusto Fernandez (DS Junior Team) crashed out of the lead on lap 4 leaving a gaggle of hungry riders to battle it out to the flag. Kevin Manfredi (Newton Trasformatori) and series leader prior to Monza Michael Canducci (Colors Experience) gave the home fans something to cheer about as they each took a turn at the front. As the riders started the final lap it was Aussie Zac Levy and Lorenzo Garafoli (Lorenzo Racing) had moved into what looked like the best position, but just like the opening two races, the drag to the flag decided the outcome.

Technical Problem Causes Schacht Retirement At Monza
Alex Schacht’s debut season in the World Supersport championship continues to be one of frustration after a clutch problem forced his retirement at Monza yesterday.
Alex, who was a front runner in last year’s UEM Supertock 600cc championship, has found the step up to World Championship level a lot bigger than anticipated. That aside, that fast Danish youngster is taking small steps in the right direction with every lap he completes.
Today’s race, the fourth in this year’s World Supersport championship took four attempts to complete as a spate of riders saw the red flag on 3 separate occasions.
When the race did eventually get underway proper, Alex found himself in a battle for 25th position until a clutch problem forced his retirement.
This coupled with a technical problem in qualifying certainly limited the amount of track time that Alex had this weekend, but both he and everyone at Racing Team Toth are confident that they can turn things around as the season progresses starting at Donington Park, UK, in two weeks time.
Nemeth 22nd In Chaotic World Supersport Race At Monza
Hungarian Balazs Nemeth finished 22nd in yesterday’s World Supersport race at the Autodromo di Monza after a series of crashes caused four restarts.
After making progress during qualifying despite the changeable weather conditions, the Complus SMS Honda rider did well to avoid being tangled in the turn one carnage on three occasions.
In the race that did run all the way to the flag, Balazs rode well, swapping places firstly with compatriot Imre Toth and later in the race with Italy’s Dino Lombardi who would just fend him off in the race to the line.
The season continues with the fifth round of the World Supersport championship taking place in a fortnight at the Donington Park circuit in the UK where both Balazs and the Complus SMS Honda team are aiming to secure their first point scoring finish of the season.
Lewis Back On The Podium At Historic Monza
Flying Kiwi Jake Lewis put himself firmly back in contention for the PATA European Junior Cup title with a hard fought 3rd position finish at Monza in Italy yesterday.
Starting on the second row, Jake, who won the opening race of the season in Aragon, did well to avoid the falling riders into turn one before involving himself in a race long duel with ten stars of the future all eager to take victory.
The race was run over its original 7 laps, despite being delayed by more than 90 minutes due to earlier crashes in other races.
Lewis, showed no signs of nerves however and led the race on a number of occasions as the eleven rider dice at the front intensified.
Augusto Fernandez’s crash with 3 laps to go could have split the pack but with slipstreaming at the historic Italian circuit so crucial, Jake found himself back in contention as the remaining ten riders began their final lap.
Coming out of the famous Parabolica curve and onto the final straight, Jake timed his move almost to perfection pulling out at the last possible minute from behind Robin Anne in an attempt to snatch victory at the line.
With the leading group of ten breaking the timing beam more or less side by side it took the official computer a few moments to determine the outcome and when it did, Jake would be classified 3rd less than 2 tenths of second behind Anne (who took the win) and Switzerland’s Adrien Pittet.
Today’s result confirms Jake as 2nd overall in the current championship standings, having closed the gap on Michael Canducci to just 2 points.
The European Junior Cup riders get a five week break now until things resume, again in Italy but this time at Imola.
Lowes and Yamaha Triumph with Victory and Championship Lead in Monza
Yakhnich Yamaha Motorsport rider Sam Lowes delivered a stunning victory yesterday in a drama filled Monza World Supersport race punctuated by no less than three red flag incidents. The young British rider had started from pole on his Yamaha YZF-R6, his eighth career pole and third consecutive of the 2013 season. Having fallen as an innocent victim in the first of several major on-track incidents Lowes was able to restart and became the key protagonist in the 10lap sprint that became the last re-start of the Supersport race. Victory had looked in doubt on the penultimate lap as Lowes dropped to fourth however a stunning pass on the brakes going into the Della Roggia chicane put the Brit passed Florian Marino, Lorenzo Zanetti and Riccardo Russo to secure the lead which he held to the line.
The victory moves Lowes firmly into the World Supersport Championship lead with 70 points, sixteen clear of Fabien Foret in second place after four rounds.
Lowes teammate Vladimir Leonov made an impressive recovery from a challenging 21st position on the grid to finish well inside the top ten, beating Luca Scassa across the line by two tenths of a second to take seventh at the flag. The Russian worked hard to avoid the numerous track incidents and work his way through the field on each re-start. The result puts Leonov into thirteenth in the standings with 21 points.

“Today was a bit different to a normal race day. In the previous starts I was lucky to not get into too much trouble. That race was quite difficult for me, and a very good battle. Thank you very much to my team and to Yamaha who have given me a fantastic bike all season. We’ll see everyone at my home race in Donington and hopefully we can do the same again!”
Morrentino Scores Maiden Superstock 600 Victory
Victory and podium domination also went to Yamaha in the Superstock 600 European Cup race, Team Trasimeno Yamaha rider Nicola Morrentino being the first of four Yamaha YZF-R6s to cross the line, securing his maiden victory in challenging conditions. The race started shortly after a major rainstorm, making Morrentino’s victory even more special, the Italian having ridden nine laps through difficult conditions and a soaking wet track for his win. The win places him in fourth in the standings with 33 points, 24 behind fellow Yamaha rider and Championship leader Gauthier Duwelz, who finished ninth.
