Another MotoGP Launch: San Carlo Gresini Show Off Simoncelli And Aoyama

It isn't just the Moto2 teams launching this week, the San Carlo Gresini Honda team held their launch at Monza, presenting Hiroshi Aoyama and MotoGP's own Fabulous Furry Freak Brother Marco Simoncelli to the media. The team is more than just a satellite team, though: team boss Fausto Gresini told's Alice Margaria that the team was now a "100% factory team," and he had high hopes for both of his riders. Below is the press release from the launch:

In the fittingly historic surroundings of the Monza circuit in Italy the San Carlo President Alberto Vitaloni and Team Manager Fausto Gresini today officially unveiled the Honda RC212V machines to be ridden in the MotoGP World Championship 2011 by Hiroshi Aoyama and Marco Simoncelli. "Super Sic" and his new Japanese team-mate made a spectacular entry in a special San Carlo sidecar, a symbol of the long established Italian-Japanese relationship enjoyed by the team. San Carlo and Team Gresini provide a strong Italian arm to the set-up, perfectly complimenting the competitiveness and high-performance of their Japanese counterparts at Honda. It looks certain to be a successful partnership when the MotoGP season fires up under the floodlights in Qatar on March 20th.

ALBERTO VITALONI "It is a day to celebrate, with San Carlo reaching 75 years of age and Fausto Gresini having recently turned 50. Everything is in place for us to have a good season this year. The team have been working hard in recent years and we have had to be patient but now is the time for us to reap the fruit of all that we have sown in MotoGP. We have a competitive line-up with Marco Simoncelli and Hiroshi Aoyama and I am sure that together we will be celebrating the kind of results that we know the team is capable of. It is a fantastic moment and all I can say is good luck to everybody."

FAUSTO GRESINI "Today was the moment we had all been waiting for, with the presentation of Team San Carlo Honda Gresini 2011, and I am happy that we are able to do so with two riders of the calibre of Simoncelli and Aoyama. We think this will be an excellent season for us. Simoncelli has made great progress, Honda have given us a great bike and we are delighted to have San Carlo with us again as main sponsor because they have shared some difficult times with us and now I hope it is our opportunity to pay them back with some great success. We are looking forward to Qatar and can't wait to get on track for the first race."

MARCO SIMONCELLI "I am really happy to be here at Monza for the Team San Carlo Honda Gresini 2011 presentation. Monza brought me good luck during my 250cc career, when we also did our team presentation here, so from a superstitious point of view I couldn't be happier! Now I am looking forward to getting to Qatar for the final test and above all for the first race."

HIROSHI AOYAMA "I am happy to be enjoying this experience with a new team, who have made me feel very comfortable straight away. We had a good text recently in Malaysia and I am very determined about the season ahead. My objective is to do well and maybe even fight for the top five. Whatever happens I will be giving my best in every race."

Does he mean that he now has 2 factory RC212V's? That would make 5 factory bikes in the field! Has any one factory ever had such a large presence in the field?

My guess is that there have been higher numbers of factory bikes occasionally in the past - but getting the factories to admit that is a different story!
