Paddock Pass Podcast Episode 24 - Reviewing Jerez, and Examining Lorenzo's Ducati Switch

The Jerez round of MotoGP left us with plenty to talk about, and so episode 24 of the Paddock Pass Podcast is a long one - even after the edits. Regulars Neil Morrison and David Emmett are joined by Jensen Beeler of Asphalt & Rubber to chew over the excitement of the race and the goings on behind the scenes, and at the test afterwards.

Obviously, there was an intriguing race with Valentino Rossi taking victory in barnstorming fashion. But the big news was Jorge Lorenzo's move to Ducati, which is going to have a major impact on who goes where in the rest of the field. We run through various scenarios of who we expect to move.

There were also some pretty strong performances elsewhere, as well as two great races in Moto2 and Moto3. We take a look at the wins by Brad Binder and Sam Lowes, and also discuss whether the Moto2 class needs to change, and if so, how.

Rumor has it that Dani Pedrosa might join Rossi given that Vinales and Movistar Yamaha have disagreements over money!

over Lorenzo on the Ducati. If Dani can keep the bad luck away from him, be consistent then he may even win a WC in 2017.

If Dani goes to Yamaha, then perhaps we will see AI29 going to Repsol Honda?

How about AI29 going to Yamaha, nothing against Dani but AI29 could be a great signing for them.

Dani is tailor made for the M1, the fact that he's been stuck on the most aggressive bike in the paddock for his entire MotoGP career is a bit of a tragedy - he's the smallest guy on the grid and it must be massive handicap for him.


I'd love to see him on an M1 and I think he'll find it a lot easier than that Honda.  I seem to recall Dovi being pleasantly surprised by just how good the Tech3 bike was when he was booted from HRC and ended up riding it, without any of the chattering issues that Dani and Casey were having in 2011.

While many are touting Lorenzo as the messiah, leading Ducati to the Promised Land (top step of the podium) I'm not totally convinced.

Thinking about the top 4 Lorenzo is probably the worst "fit" for what will be the GP17.  I just think to something Simon Crafar espouses in his Moto Vudu tutorial: to maximise the advantages of a big bike you want to make the straights as long as possible and the corners as short as possible.  Gigi seems to have built his bike with this ethos in mind, where Lorenzo/Yamaha have trodden a very different path with the development of the M1.

Will Lorenzo be able to "rail it"?  The bike certainly turns now but will it do so to Lorenzo's liking?  Can the bike be adapted to suit Lorenzo or will Lorenzo be forced to adapt to it?



Transcribing the podcast would be a time-consuming and costly business. It may be possible once we get a big-name sponsor backing the show. But not right now. 

Right now, that is an expense which is not worth investing in. The current list of people asking for a transcription contains exactly one (1) person. 

We have an excellent transcriptionist who works with the site and several other English-speaking journalists (Kelly Broderick, details available on request), but at the moment, the costs outweigh the return.

Certainly, as soon as the podcast starts generating significantly more income, we will definitely consider having the podcast transcribed.

Great podcast. Plenty to comment upon, especially appreciated the balanced and insightful consideration of Moto2 dynamics. I appreciated the details re the location of the speed trap sensor strip being placed for cars that brake later and so under-gauging bike speeds. It is also quite long, in which speeds are changing, and within its own reading zone can be reporting an average over its length as well as I understand, shaving off several KPH.

Binder's ride was the news of the weekend for me right there with Jorge The Red and Valentino on fire. Brilliant!

Pedrosa to Yamaha and Vinales staying at Suzuki? A week ago I would have said you were indulging in odd conjecture. The more one thinks about the 2017 line up the better it seems. The up and coming Ducati just got a top 2 rider. The temporarily down and out "sh*t" Honda (elegantly put) has a top 2 rider. The best bike out there has the 3rd fastest rider and a seat up for grabs by a youngster or promising top 5 rider. And so far up and coming Suzuki is able to secure the unlikely services of Vinales for another year to support their forward momentum.

"Hasn't really proved himself because he hasn't gotten a podium" re Vinales rings a bit hollow for me given the bike he is on and his performance. So does the recent media and perhaps the few recent statements from Ducati that momentarily forget what we have seen from Iannone that places him right there with Vinales as rider talent. Current tire woes and one boneheaded "pass" through his team mate won't stop Iannone for long. He should pay a visit to Jarvis with his buddy Vale and see what they can work out for the second Yamaha seat, and let Ducati know he isn't bound there.

Tires. You said exactly what I have been thinking. It is quite a shame for Ducati that Redding was heating up that softer construction tire on that track with that bike with that tire pressure until it delaminated. And a shame for lighter riders like Pedrosa (until he ends up on a Factory Yamaha?!). And a boon for Valentino. He isn't just saving his tire via short shifting, he is getting power down. Any real or imaginary transgressions against him from late last season have been compensated by the tire gods. He will be strong this season.

It crosses my mind often that if Honda had gotten things closer to right developing their 2015 and 2016 bikes that we could be in a much less interesting situation in which Marquez and HRC dominate. We are in for a treat, and for quite interesting reasons.
