Cormac Shoots COTA: A Photographic Record Of The Horsepower Rodeo

By David Emmett | Thu, 20/04/2023 - 19:14

Up the hill - this is how hard you brake into Turn 1, as demonstrated by Brad Binder

Everything is bigger in Texas. Including the diving boards

View is spectacular though

Alex Rins made it four wins on four different bikes at COTA. This one was arguably the most impressive so far

COTA is an unforgiving place. Bumps, temperature, and slippery asphalt made it all too easy to crash, as Raul Fernandez is demonstrating

Same place same team, different rider, different angle. Miguel Oliveira slides off at Turn 2, as seen from the tower

Would we see Portimão Franco or Termas Franco in Texas? In reality, we saw something in between from Morbidelli

Joan Mir was back, Marc Marquez wasn't, so Stefan Bradl stepped up as temporary teammate

Another temporary sub. Jonas Folger is taking the place of Pol Espargaro until the Spaniard is fit again. Folger has work to do

Look of a leader: Marco Bezzecchi came away from Texas with two sixth places, and still managed to extend his lead in the championship

MotoGP 2023: The ride-height device of Brad Binder's KTM RC16 in action

Compare and contrast with the ride-height device of Johann Zarco's Pramac Ducati

Winner winner chicken dinner: Lucio Cecchinello's LCR Honda team has long been punching well above its weight in MotoGP

The special and separate podium for the sprint races. (Don't call it a podium! Don't call it a sprint race!) Jorge Martin gets his medal for 3rd on Saturday

Luca Marini already had a (non)podium in the sprint race, and finally added a "real" podium on Sunday

Alex Marquez had one hell of a weekend. Four crashes, two in each race, getting taken out by Jorge Martin, and throwing up in his helmet. At least he was fast.

Miguel Oliveira was back in action, and back up to speed

Everything is bigger in Texas, but especially the flags

The walk of shame. Jack Miller's KTM gets pushed back into pit lane, down two wings and up a lot of gravel and grass

Starting proceedings with a bang. Well, a lot of bangs actually

Note the water sprayer in the hand of the mechanic on the right. The fairings are so tight on the Ducati that they have a tendency to scorch.

Bezz chasing Mav from above

Teamwork made the dreamwork for Alex Rins

Stefan Bradl's rear tire starting to show signs of the punishment it takes on the right hand side at COTA

Sometimes you don't have time to change your leathers. Jorge Martin crashed early in qualifying, and rushed back out again ASAP on bike #2

A win in the sprint race, and a silly crash in the grand prix. Mixed results for Pecco Bagnaia at COTA

Back on the podium, but not exactly delighted. Fabio Quartararo finished third in Texas, and had a lot of criticism for Yamaha

The rush to the grid

In an attempt to give the fans even more bang for their buck, Dorna introduce a new event: The Tool Chest Race

Speaking of tools: note the special mounts for assorted drills on the right

Or the tool trolley in front of Joan Mir's bike. This typically contains all the tools needed to change wheels and adjust suspension

It doesn't look like it, but that's quite a steep hill

And that is quite a long track. And a spectacular view

Can we please, for the love of all that is holy, stop with the shoey?

Jack Miller is on a roll. Unfortunately, that included a roll through the gravel on Sunday

COTA is photogenic for sure.

One thing tho; where's the crowd I remember from my visits there?

It was not packed then (2013 & 2016) but I'd say definitly not as sparsely attended as what we saw last weekend.

Anyone has the attendence numbers?

I feel the same way, it makes me feel a little ill.
