Silly season is winding down, and seats are filling up, as the last of the rides still vacant start getting taken. The first of the official announcements was made yesterday, with Sylvain Guintoli signing to ride the Pramac d'Antin Ducati for 2008. Guintoli, all set to be rookie of the year, by virtue of being the only rider in the race, has nevertheless impressed the paddock with his quick learning and aggressiveness, and after losing his ride at Tech 3, looked certain to be signed somewhere. But although the move was expected, it remains rather ironic, as it was Guintoli who crashed into current Pramac rider Alex Hofmann at Laguna Seca, badly injuring the German's hand, and making Hofmann's job of retaining his ride for next year virtually impossible. And Guintoli is following a hopeful example: the last person to crash into a fellow rider and then take his ride was Casey Stoner, the man who has dominated the 2007 season.
