It has been. A deserving champion and an honourful second spot for FQ20. Would have wished for them both to claim top spot but there can be only one... Fabulous win by Rins as well.

Now I am curious about Tuesday. How big is the step forward in hp for the M1? Will the new Honda stop trying to kill its riders? Is KTM's frame a step forward? Bring it on 😃

Thanks! Raul has actually won at Algarve in moto2 and Miguel-well, it is his home circuit. And they're both on aprilias, which go decently in Portugal. It's a beautiful track.. the elevation changes are just ❤️

I have recently just started track days as a hobby and since then, I cannot help but admire the GP tracks. Things of beauty. Joy forever.

India. MMRT track. I ride a KTM duke 200. Been riding since 2014 but began track days as recently as 2022. When I said I admire the motogp tracks, i mean on TV. I haven't even seen the one in my country yet 😁😁

But ya, basic intention is to attend more track schools and days! I kept waiting to scrape together a few more bucks to buy another motorcycle that i forgot to enjoy what I have at hand. Decided not to do that anymore..

Btw, nice catching up with you and the others here. Get back on that track soon!

Next, as you may have seen below, I now have Riesjart’s email (thanks for facilitating) and I’ll be emailing him later this evening for his address etc. I’ve not seen anything so far from Ivanhoe, but hopefully he will be in touch shortly. 

This year I’ve selected riders for their speed and style, riders who give me joy simply watching them racing a bike. I hope they bring joy to others too. I’m allowing myself only two Ducatis, no Hondas, as in previous years, much as I admire Mir and Rins and wish them well. And no one over 30 at the start of the season - seems to me MotoGP with the addition of sprint races is no country for old men.  Oh, and my selection reflects the feeling that Fabio won’t have a bike on which to express his genius to the full, that the Ducati factory team may have chosen the wrong rider and the hope that Aprilia are already focussing on the areas where they need to improve after coming so close in 2022, and will come back in full force next season.

Your choice of BB as champion, but also your comments.

I believe that because there will be no need to go to fuel efficient maps in the sprint races, Ducati will have an even greater advantage, able to use full power for ~11 laps.

Unlike some of my fellow Mutterers, I can't wait to see the sprints. Don't you want to see the best rider all-out with no tire conservation or fuel conservation strategy?

Great ideas Clover… and love your BB pick #1. Was wondering if I shouldn’t add him in my 5, he’s earned it and if Valencia is a predictor he may well end up at the sharp end. Time for some soul searching!

Enea Bastianini for Champion del Mondo!

Pecco Bagnaia for a Ducati Corse 1,2! Could go the other way but two for Bagnaia back to back seems unlikely.

Marc Marquez to win races and crash a bit but not so much of either as pre 2020. The new kids are quick!

Brad Binder because I rate KTM highly as a racing company and expect much more from KTM after poor results in 2022. Jack will take some time to adapt to whatever KTM brings for 2023.

Fabio Quartararo I don't expect a rocket powered Yamaha. Fabulous Q will ride the wheels off whatever bike he is on. I would have Fab a bit higher if I was more confident regarding the Yamaha bike. Yamaha's team, management and corporate backing as well.

Miguel Oliveira the smiling Dentist for top Indi rider. Simply because I want Aprilia to do well, more in hope than really expecting miracles. 2022 was a great season and Aprilia have learnt a lot. Four riders & eight bikes may require a lot of adaptation for wee Aprilia.

Guessing/hoping Luca M is top 3, as well as Binder. But...

I think I will wait to predict the future to about March 4th, after all the motocross training accidents.

P.S. Congratulations to Pecco, what a comeback! Really happy to see him become a champion.

Really enjoyed this, thanks to Ivanhoe for the spreadsheeting goodness. SP_won I think I was the same except different order, but on reflection going for an outlier in 5th. I just suspect the Ductaci Factory environment is just not conducive to consistent results.. Hopefully this is not a commentator's curse for any of these riders with 2 of my picks from this year off the track for a considerable period. Anyway, here they are:

Super hard to make a pick, but the Ducs just look so solid and with so many bikes they have a massive data advantage in these years of few tests days. Marc will be back to form though, and Yamaha will once again bring a minor update that Fabio will ride the wheels off to keep up with the big spenders. Very unsure about Aleix, wonder if this year wasn't his Hail Mary, but fingers crossed - and I had regrets this year for not including him in my picks. Other Ducati riders will be settling in, Martin will keep crashing and Zarco will keep being the in-race test rider. Even if Honda bring the goods I suspect it will take the ex-Suzuki riders too long to adjust. Absolutely expect to have this all completely wrong. Glad everyone is getting a break, but simultaneously wish I could be watching race 1 next weekend.

I can't help but wonder if Honda might have the wrong ex-Suzuki guy in their Team. Obviuosly Mir is good, but it seems to me that Rins is the one with that burning need to win and he when puts his mind to it he can find a way to make it happen.

In passing on the (in my case, somewhat fortuitous) #1 plate to a very worthy 2022 winner in Riesjart, can I offer congratulations to each and every contender for a great contest and some brilliant picks. Special thanks to Shrink for being our ringmaster (and letting me beat him again), commiserations to KN58, who came so close only to have victory snatched away at the very last moment - maybe next time, my friend. Shrink has already mentioned TZ/RD and rightly so, the Boss was also hampered in a similar way, then there’s Powervalve - the only one of us to go with Aleix, good picking my friend, and so many more, too many to mention - I’ve already gone on too long. Best of luck for 2023.

One final thought. Perhaps those that can and want to could make a donation to Motomatters alongside submitting their picks to Shrink. Just a thought. That was a great championship, both on the track and on this forum, where the top two battled it out all the way to the final race. Going to observe the winter tests before making picks. Not that it will make much difference, but a change in strategy is in order after finishing near the bottom of the pile for two years running. HA! More folly probably. (but you never know and that's why we play the game)

I never posted my predictions for the 2023 season. Here we go:

1. Pecco--he wins again on the best bike.

2. Marini--coming on strong, a Dovi-like thinker for the next gen.

3. Fabio--victory of rider skill over machine.

4. Oliveira--free from KTM, and got a much better new bike than Mir, Rins, Miller, Pol...

5. Binder--his ability to bring a good result from a bad bike equals Fabio's.

Independent--I really don't like Alex Marquez. Really. I don't like his brother either. But Alex in my choice.

Can't wait for Portimao!

Shall we agree on a top 3 plus top independent, 'shrink what do you say?

Much trickier to predict a top 3, who would you field? 2 from team red, Quartararo, Marc, Aleix/Mav, Rins, top independent?

Three will require some real tough choices to be made...

^ Great idea on top Independent! If no repeats and such a large # of people it is likely to make more people happy to do Top 5 plus one Independent. Top 3 may run out of preferable/good options after a dozen participants, penalizing the others?

^ Group input --> decision by "Race Direction"

Anyone want to be a third with us so we can vote efficiently? Anyone have a recommendation? Cloverleaf, D999, Ivanhoe, spongedaddy, St Stephen, WaveyD1974, Freddie Spencer?

Case in point from last yr, look at our current #1 and #2 front runners. Multiple people discussed how to best account for Riesjart having order better, but KN58 has the points over him.

Apical and SP_won both have the Top 2 correct! Back battling for 9th. Powervalve picked Asparagus! What do you three think?

(It is always a compromise, and it isnt easy to do via spreadsheet is it?). Add a "correct position bonus?" Descending in value from 1st thru 5th? As a % of the rider's points? That sounds like your final decision Ivanhoe the "Timing and Scoring manager."

REWATCHING THE RACE oh my. And I'm going to try not to post a single thing about it for a change, there are shop projects getting dusty...

The original idea was just a prediction of the championship podium for fun. The more complex it gets the more it becomes a chore to some degree. I think from the original idea the only need to keep any score is to add some measure of how useless our predictions are.

I think no matter how we tried to adjust the scoring to reflect the 'correct ordering' of riders within a chosen group, it would create as many 'problems' as it solved. I think it is a question of where is the value in the predictions. Reward that value and then an imperfect system would decide who was champion....very much like the real championship. If it's order then reward the ordering and use total points for a tie. If it's points then use points and ordering for a tie.

I agree, keep it simple. The interesting this year, to me at least, has been the rookie results. Most of us thought Raul or Remy would take the lead. Aside from the KTM (bike and team) not really helping them achieve results, not many of us predicted Bezecchi’s success. So I think rookie, rather than independent, should stay in the mix and it will separate the true wizards from the rest of us. Or are there no rookies for 2023?

So far, Fernandez is the only rookie entering Motogp in '23. Unless Toprak...

I think top independent is a good addition. The number of veteran riders? I don't know, how about four? This season, I believe tied scores are broken by the accuracy of the order of the picks. That sounds fine by me.

Did you watch the moto3 race yesterday? A really good one. McPhee sitting on the ground in Parc ferme. Put a towel over his head and sobbed a few times. Outpouring of emotion from such a frustrating season. Then he composed himself, stood up, and shared joy with his teammates. Including his crew chief. The guy from the video from three years ago abusing a rider.

2023 Top 5 starts right after Valencia. Be sure to sign up early because no repeats are allowed. (I can get it started again and hand the list off Weds before Qatar).

^ you’ve had a very good discussion - apologies for the late arrival on the scene - and it seems from the points made, as ‘shrink suggests, that it’s worth running with the current approach for another year, substituting Independent for Rookie. I did consider raising the question of replacement riders, having felt sympathy towards colleagues who lost a rider through in-season injury or retirement (as in the case of Rins or Mir or Dovi). And even more sympathy towards those who selected what should have been an excellent team but were unaccountably let down by the underperformance of one of their riders (Morbidelli, for example, or Remi - whose  disappointing performances effectively ruined the chances of several otherwise strong contenders - some with potential for #1. And finally, the thought occurred of limiting the number of bikes of one make that can be selected (for no doubt obvious reasons). But on balance I tend to think it’s better to leave things as they are and let pickers weigh chances of injury and underperformance when choosing their teams. On ‘shrink’s question of whether Top Independent can ‘be a repeat of someone in your Top 5’, I’ve not made any picks myself yet, but in principle the answer seems to me to be a resounding ‘yes’. 
 

While I’m on, once again many thanks to the redoubtable Ivanhoe - I hope things are going well with you, my friend. If it’s ok with you, I’ll be sending you a racing shirt at the end of the season as a small thank you for your contribution (I’ll be in touch about that separately and in due course also with the new holder of #1 plate). This is in no way connected with your keeping me for much of the season in sight of a 3rd place finish. That prospect is swiftly diminishing now sadly - it’s just as well then that there isn’t a massive Ducati style bonus for third or I’d be feeling less cheery at the prospect of slipping down the table. If nothing else, I’m hopeful of finishing ahead of ‘shrink ;)

Thanks for the kind words, I’ve ridden my luck and certainly had fun this year, especially over our pretend enmity, but while I’ll have a shot I’ve no great hopes of tipping success next year. It seems to me that bikes and riders, already closely matched, will be even better matched and more difficult to separate next year, especially with the additional sprint races. Way beyond my knowledge and skill set to figure out. But not yours, my friend, and unless luck comes to my aid for a third year, you’ll leave me in the dust.  As will many others. I’m hoping for a bumper entry to the Top 5 and Independent stakes 2023 and some quality Motomuttering, but not for laurels.

I appreciate the information and look forward to the off season discussions and banter!  It's been interesting watching the scoring this season (I came to Motomatters as a subscriber about a quarter of the way into the season).  I thought I was reasonably knowledgable about MotoGP until I started reading the comments here - wow, how much I have learned!  (Mostly I learned that I didn't really know all that much after all....LOL).  Will be great to read and chat until the 2023 championship gets underway.  Thanks to all (especially David E!) for making this such a terrific forum.  Great group!

 

This is the first season I joined the predictions and it certainly added some spice to the races. Thanks everyone who made it happen (Ivanhoe, 'Shrink). First races I thought I'd be nowhere....can I still overtske KN58? 😃

...which is pretty appropriate since I'm just about last in the standings, near to my fellow Dovi sympathizer Poole Pirate.

In these kinds of calculations it's either simple but not always precise or fair, or complex, which is too much work and the players often don't even know how the winner was determined. So...I agree with the group that we should do top 5 and top independent. My only hope has been some kind of extra credit for actually picking the champion, since the way it stands now it's the top 5 in any order. But I am of course happy to go along with the group decision.

Have been on the road, watching races on the laptop, only saw the first WSBK race late last night. Finally, thanks to Ivanhoe, Clover and 'Shrink!

Top five and top independent it is.

Predicting the order right should have an impact beyond just picking the best five, let’s see what the spreadsheet can do.

Something like a differential multiplier should be doable. As in 25 for the #1, 20 for #2, 16 for #3, divided by the differential.

Example: guess 1 and 2 right, then 3-4-5 as 5-4-3.

1 right = 25

2 right = 20

3 as 5 = 16/2 = 8

4 right = 13

5 as 3 = 11/2 = 5.5

total 69.5 as the multiplier of your total score 

Guessing them all right in the right order yields 25+20+16+13+11=85

Or if you find this too complicated, just the top three? With the amount of similar choices this year, a #1 may not give a significant distinction.

If multiplier is too much, then how about the differential (times some multiplier) added to your total?

You're joking right, ivanhoe? Discerning between one's seriousness versus humor can be difficult at times through the written word. Easier through natural human contact.

If you are serious, wouldn't using correct order to determine same point total tiebreaks be simpler? i am all in for complicating matters and positions, be it motos or chess, but what about the rest (of us)? 

Any other mutterers want to share their thoughts? 

^ Super cool! If it is easy enough to execute, I think doing it would improve on things if "pitched" utterly simply. How much "bonus" is the trick. 

My take is that it should be a small boost just to push the person forward (vs be a huge factor). And a % of points. 

SIMPLEST as well as APPEALING AMOUNT? I'd say 10% of total points "Win Bonus" getting #1 right, 7% for #2, 5% for #3, 3.25% for #2 and 2% for #5.

I can pitch it well enough if it is going roughly to that plan above. What do you think? (I want my Win Bonus...just like a rider!).

I am in agreement with 'Shrink's simple 10%. Or, even simpler, a point bonus at the end of the season for having picked the champion correctly.

This will again be a lot of fun (well, specifically much more fun for me if I get out of the relegation zone!) no matter how it is structured, so I am not very concerned no matter what is decided. But I do want to make it as easy as possible for you Ivanhoe.

We can make that happen folks. ‘shrink, better start preparing those 2023 contracts mate, sounds like we have a few new joiners 😉.

Bonuses sound cool, Ivanhoe (and Motoshrink). Why not try it and see what happens? It's all in good fun. What the specific percentage of each bonus should be is the arbitrary part to which I have nothing constructive to add. What is unclear is whether the bonus points are given after each race or solely at the end of the season. Either way is fine by us. Well, it's essentially Louis's project.

If Fabio wins the last two then Pecco needs a 2nd and a 3rd which is never easy. However, I really can't see Fabio winning both, possibly Sepang but only maybe. I think two solid results will clinch it for Pecco, two 4th places, still not easy but looking very good. Only a no score can stop him now I think.

I can, and do, empathize with those that are experiencing one of "those Days," when i am feeling out of sorts or not right like something is missing, clumsy or disjointed with words and actions, or basically retarded (in the sense of not being aware of being "in sync" with life. So, if you are having a ballooning tire pressure of excessive wear situation, or the traction control is cutting in excessively, or are riding "behind the bike rather than on it," (as Pedrosa once described the experience) I'll take the lead. No worries, mate.

Good of you to step in. Seems it’s between KN58 and Riesjart, but let’s see. I’m looking forward to passing the #1 plate to the eventual winner, together with a racing shirt in the tradition ‘shrink established last season. I was gently hoping it would be him and I could deck him out in red. But it was not to be. Maybe next year.

I would not be surprised if Binder finished the season in fifth. Throughout his gp career, he has always improved his final position in the standings from one year to the next in each category. He has that look on the grid - the steely determination to get it done. But he has a big challenge with the form Miller has been showing of late.

KN58, you are going to do well if it rains on Sunday - I think you've got it. Great picks!

Again, Ducati doesn't have to tell Bezzecchi to care for VR46 brother Pecco. Nor Miller! He passed clean and offered a tow in my view. Martin? Overriding lots of corners on fast approach. Zarco? That one dive almost hit the back of Bagnaia, and he was not changing his braking or line. Red went to Pramac after for a chat. 

Marquez can do the Dovi, but not a Pramac rider. Bezzecchi dropped like a stone when it dried and his tires were worn. He'd done his job out front, but it cost his Michelins. Sitting in 2nd costs visibility but overheats the front AND saves tire on a drying track. Miller was smart.

Bastiannini and Bagnaia are already in cahoots. Marini hears the VR46 orders. DiGi is too far back to be of service.

Team orders need to be in French and Spanish, with purple accents. And I think is just wise. 

Logical, even natural. Witness the flip side for isolated Fabio or Aleix! Hung out to dry in the wet, Red Armada running the gauntlet. No inline 4s even in play, it will be WORSE post Suzuki.

How will Yamaha even get front tires next year?! Better hope KTM and Honda leave some super softs laying around to buy with Monster money from Red Bull staff. Or have Fabio's French passport posted up at Michelin's tent. A hard rain is gonna fall.

That Ducati have thrown this away, we are reminded of the late Nicky Hayden's quote of "That's why we line up on Sunday."  The commentators perspectives on the relative merits of rain skills of Pecco and Fab did not play out.  We've got ourselves a proper dog fight for the end of the year.

 

I'm bias but nothing beats late-season high stakes championship battles at the Island.

This was a really weird race, completely contradicting expectations.

Previous rounds have shown Fabulous/Yamaha as having the better base setting: quick from first practice, where Pecco/Ducati have had to work hard through the weekend. And Pecco has struggled in wet conditions.

Fabulous has had his issues in the past with mixed, not quite wet, not really dry, but this was nothing of the sort = full wet, in which he has previously been fast.

But even Cal admitted Yamaha missed a trick, couldn’t find the feeling in the wet.

The wet race should have been a blessing for Yamaha, instead it turned into a nightmare.

Just weird, given Yamaha/Fabulous seemed to have a much better base to start from. Fabulous fan here, can’t help thinking they have let a golden opportunity go begging…but that’s why it is a team sport, far more involved than just the 24(?) laps on race day.

If you think it is hard passing a Ducati, wait until Bastiannini is behind Bagnaia leaving room, defending the race line, and enjoying the tow at pace! Then Bezzechi? Italians, Ducs, and VR46 brother. Followed by Zarco too.

P.Espargaro and A.Marquez didn't stand a chance getting by. Brotherhood may be a strong off track bond, but...

--> Marc besting Oliveira was excellent strategy/racecraft. Same for Binder on Martin!

Relatively calm opening stage, painful lessons learned. If you were Ducati and DIDN'T flex coordinated strategy with racers it would be time for criticism. It's a war!

Made a mistake with my rookie pick, that's racing. Go Bezzecchi!

Should have picked another Ducati but hoped KTM would have a better year. Wishful thinking re; Remy "superbike" Gardner.

Picked the right Yamaha at least.

Looks like I should have pick Bezzecchi for my rookie, sorry Remy.

Could have been in third place.

Picking Marc Marquez was a mistake? How can that be?! AE41 has 2.6 times as many points as MM93.

Perfect picks would mean 1,023 points, none of us are even close. Unpredictable.
